CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITYWe offer students and graduates information, advice and guidance on building skills, experience and industry contacts to improve their employability. You can talk to our advisers about career options with the course that you are considering, how placements, work experience and co-curricular opportunities can help you to build the graduate attributes that employers value and how we help our graduates to secure a graduate job. DOCTORAL HUB: RESEARCH DEGREESNB: this Hub is located in the Rolle Plaza Marquee.

A friendly team of specialist advisors from the University Graduate School will help you answer your questions about postgraduate research degrees – these include ResM, MPhil/PhDs, MD, MS and Professional Doctorates (including EdD, DBA, DClinPsy). They can help you with application and eligibility processes, funding and studentship queries, as well as details of the programmes of study. They are also able to advise you on potential research groups and supervisors that align with your interests and proposed project.

HEALTHCARE LEARNING: SMILE-ON NB: this stand is located in the Rolle Plaza Marquee.

Bringing learners and leading experts in business and healthcare together in an online community. Offers distance learning in MBA Healthcare (part-time).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVICE (ISA)The team provides advice and guidance for non-UK, EU and EEA students about living and studying in the UK.

LEARNING GATEWAYCare LeaversWe welcome applicants who have been in care and provide targeted support and guidance for care leavers in their transition to, and during their time at university. This includes a £2,000 per year Care Leavers Bursary for eligible students. For looked-after young people aged 11-18 years, we offer a range of activities and practical support throughout the reparation and application process.

Disability AssistHere to help you with academic support if you have a disability. Your application to study here is considered on academic merit; it helps us to support you if we know if you have a disability. We will work with you to help you make informed decisions about any support that might help you with your studies. Support may include: guidance on disclosing a disability, help with accessing support from the Disabled Students' Allowance and access to DAS Equipment Loan Library.

Health and WellbeingThe NHS-provided university health centre, located in the Wellbeing Centre, offers health services to students on campus, and can also provide you with details of other doctors and services in the city.

Learning DevelopmentWe're here to help you meet the academic demands so you can get the most out of your studying and learning. Through our one-to-one and small group tutorials, taught sessions, Writing Café and online resources, you can get advice on areas including writing and presenting, developing thinking, managing projects, communicating your ideas and preparing for exams.

Student CounsellingThe Student Counselling and Personal Development Service offers one-to-one consultations, e-counselling, personal development sessions and Mood Boost courses. Counselling can help you to overcome the barriers that stop you fulfilling your personal and academic potential. We also have a Listening Post and a Peer Support Service based in the Learning Gateway where you can talk to trained listeners without an appointment.

The Writing CaféA unique and creative space where staff and students come to have a conversation with a member of the Learning Development team, work with one of our trained student-writing mentors, or take part in one of our many events and activities centred on writing.

POSTGRADUATE SOCIETYNB: this stand is located in the Doctoral Hub in the Rolle Plaza Marquee.

SUE AUSTIN MA Contemporary Art Practice

Sue graduated from Plymouth University’s BA (Hons) Fine Art degree in 2009 with a first class degree. Determined to further her artistic skills and understanding, Sue progressed onto the MA Contemporary Art Practice programme with Plymouth University where her work continued to attract local and national attention.

A mature student who has been wheelchair-bound for much of her life, Sue’s work as a multimedia, performance and installation artist often revolves around, and indeed sometimes actively involves, her wheelchair. Sue came to the attention of the press with a controversial project during her undergraduate degree where she used a specially modified paint wheelchair to weave lines across the length and breadth of Plymouth city centre and the University campus, joining together the two sites for the 2009 Art and Design Degree Show.

Sue says she "aims to find dramatic and powerful ways to re-position disability and disability arts".

"The University has helped to introduce me to a broad range of contemporary

fine art practice and developed in me a sound understanding of the interaction between materials, processes and ideas. The intellectual and practical demands of the Fine Art degree have enabled me to develop my thought processes and research methodology and have given me the capacity to undertake critical visual and contextual analysis.

My tutors encouraged me to be ambitious and adventurous in my work and this culminated in a project that explored the mark-making possibilities of my power wheelchair. By painting wheelchair traces through the city, joining the two fine art sites for the Degree Show, we opened up a debate about what does and doesn't constitute as art.

The Disabled Students Assessment, flexible course structure and support of tutors have been invaluable. The quality of input from teaching staff gave me the passion and energy to continue onto the MA Contemporary Art Practice, which would have been unimaginable when I returned to education as a mature student."
