Teaser Poster

Teaser Posters: are a

form of promoting a

movie by using a

basic image or

design in order too

spark consumer

interest and

increase word of

mouth. These

posters are released

very early and so its

important that they

do not reveal to

much information

about movies as

there only propose

is to create hype.

Page 3: Poster analysis

Character Poster: Character posters: are released closer to the launch of the

film and feature an individual character from the film, they

also contain the name of the actor or name of the character

played.

In some cases a tagline is also included with relation to the

character.

Teaser Posters This is a very interesting teaser poster for this movie as it conforms

to the idea of a teaser trailer in the sense that it uses a basic design to provoke market interest yet in subverts the tradition of a teaser trailer in the sense that it does give away a reasonable amount of information with regards to the film by having cattle skull which is a obvious reference to the location in which the movie was set (American west).

To add to this the skull is made from the main props in the film which include a sheriffs badge, Briefcase, money and guns which gives the audience an insight on the themes of the film.

This poster also has the important relevant information for a movie poster such as the movie name, name of directors and actors.

Finally it insures to provide the user with further information with a link to the film website for those who want more information.

The Coen brother’s are known for having very interesting teaser posters for example the true grit poster was set up to look as a wanted poster which relates to the genre and movie story as well as informing the viewers of the stars and directors.

Page 7: Poster analysis

Teaser Posters The second movie teaser poster contains much less information

than the previous as it is a very simple image from the opening scene of the movie.

I believe that this product is effective as it makes sure not to give away to much information about the the movie by not showing the actual face of the character yet it also shows another person dead on the ground. This is a very effective of capturing the audiences attention since it makes us ask what happened, why did it happen and what is going to happen.

The use of red text contrast with the image background and could symbolise blood which would inform the audience of the movie genre.

This movie teaser poster contains information about the cast and production crew as a form of creating hype due to there previous work. I personally believe that the text used for the cast and other people involved I the production is too large and to some degree distracts the viewer from the great image used.

This teaser trailer reminds me of the one that the Coen brothers poster for Fargo as it also has a main character at the seen of a crime, beside a dead body with a very plain background in order to make sure that the viewers only focus on the important. They both also use a bold red text for the movie name as to represent its dark and bloody nature.

Character postersWhen this movie was going to be released this posters where placed in bus stop

billboards and I think that they were very interesting as they subverted the convention

of having shown the character but by only focusing on the lower half of the character

it stands out much more than other posters and forces the viewer to analyse it in

greater detail.

The use of a very large tagline for each of the main characters provides the user with

some background information about the character.

For example in the case of the top poster we are aware that it is a cop/ sheriff as mise

on scene from the costume and weapon aspect reinforces the tagline that suggest this

with key words such as law which are directly linked to the law.

We are also aware that the poster directly below is of the character that is on the run

and is in grave danger due to the tagline stating “no clean getaway's” which is further

supported by the image which has a sniper placed in the ideal focusing spot according

to the rule of thirds.

Finally this the poster on the bottom is clearly of a character that is chasing the

character in the middle poster the use of a dark blue colour scheme along side the

mysterious weapon shows that this character is a very serious threat.

Main Poster

This was the poster that was used on buses and billboards when the movie was released as it was the only poster to have the actual face of at least one of the characters and this poster itself is very effective in representing the cat and mouse chase sub genre that this film is a part of by making Josh Brolin’s character look significantly small compared to that of Javier Bardem’s by using a extreme long shot for him running and a extreme close up which takes up the majority of the background for Bardem’s character and although he seems to fade into the background he almost seems godlike with regards to him being present everywhere and power when comparing sizes.

The very dark nature of this poster gives a very ominous impression of the film and informs the audience that this is a film where something bad is going to happen.

The use of this brown colour and lack of buildings informs us on the movies set location and the movie tagline alongside the visible briefcase in Brolin's hand gives us an insight on what this film is about.

Main Posters

This was the main movie poster which used when it was released.

As we can see that theatre poster contains much more text than that of the

billboard as it takes into account that those who are seeing the billboard

may be driving and this is not only not safe but it also signifies that they do

not have enough time to read a significant amount of text.

This movie poster for theatres contains much more information such as

stating that the screen writer is Quentin Tarantino as a form of attracting his

fans.

The list of a list actors on both cases is important as it’s a very effective way

of promoting a film in the case of this film we see it listing Christopher Walken

, Dennis Hopper and Brad pit.

The review in which the film is compared to bonnie and Clyde gives viewers

an insight on the genre and would attract fans of that movie.

The directors name is in bold and stands out due to the plain white

background and its size which would make people aware of him and

increase its popularity amongst his fans.

The main prop in the image is a gun and so we are aware that this film will

contain some violence plus the two leading actor are very close together

and the form in which they are interacting with each other informs us that

they are in a relationship and so explaining the title of the film.

Alternative main Posters

The image on the top right is of the alternative billboard movie poster hence it limited text and the use of famous cast names as a promotion text for the film.

The bullet holes on the text are very prominent and so will instantly inform the viewer that this is a action film with romantic undertones. For this reason I believe that this movie billboard is much more effective as the previous one does not clearly portray its genre apart from one charter having a gun. This is a very serious problem as it would affect viewing figures due to poor target audience marketing.

I also believe that the alternative billboard poster uses a much more interesting color pallet as the use of the dark red can represent the characters passion and romance for one another but it is also relevant to the blood that will be spilled and as it is accompanied by black background to represent the dark themes within the movie.

The international movie poster uses a very conventional layout referred to as “stills in shapes” by the movie magazine empire. As it meets all of there criteria for this poster type.

I personally believe that the alternative movie poster is much more effective as it would attract a greater audience due the verity of actors in the film and by looking at there individual image you can assume what role they are playing. I think that this is important as it would attract the movies intended audience unlike the original poster which lacks information with regards to the movies plot.

Catch me if You Can (Teaser)

This is a very minimalistic poster that is very effective in representing the movies plot. The list of famous actors would be a way of creating movie hype as Leonardo Dicaprio and tom hanks are considered a list actors and have a large fan following. This teaser trailer follows the conventions of a movie teaser trailer by having a simple logo to promote the film in this case it being the blue arrows going in opposite directions.Yet the use of a image along side the movie logo breaks the convention as there normally tends to either a image or logo. I believe that this was the right move as the movie logo would not be sufficient to provide the users with some insight with regards to the plot.I believe that the use of colour was very important as the use of blue can show that this is the movie is not violent buy using the colour on the opposite side of the colour wheel to red.The lay out of the poster also Is effective in representing the time period in which is set in as the black and white characters images forcing the viewers to pay closer attention to there clothing and as they are wearing suits is can suggest that the movie is set in the 60s as this was the fashion trend in that era. This has been done for many other movies and TV shows.

Page 14: Poster analysis

Main poster (buses, billboards,

magazine advert)

This movie poster is would fit under empire magazines “ The Honest To-God Group Shot”.

The tagline for the film is “the true story of real fake” which I think perfectly explains the plot of the movie. This is very important as the without the tagline I believe that it would be very difficult to gather this level of information from the image alone.

With the help of the tagline we are able to understand that Leonardo is playing the role of a con artist as he is described as a “real fake” and the use of a fedora and suit clearly suggest that tom hanks is playing a detective as this is the typical detective costume for a movie set in the 60s.

As seen in the in the image on the top, this poster was adapted to be used for magazine and billboard promotion which I think would be very suitable as it has very little text and so would not require a lot of time to be analysed and clearly informs the user of who it is starring and what it is about which is important as those who are likely to see it have a limited time to view the poster.

Page 15: Poster analysis

Main poster

The main movie poster is a mixture between the teaser poster and the billboard poster. As the characters are in the same position as the teaser poster along side the movie logo which have been changed and are now both facing in the same direction to symbolise the chase aspect of the film between the FBI detective and the con artist.

The use of a all white background allows us to only focus on the characters and text yet it could be represent the ever changing location as the character is on the run from the law. Which is possibly the same reason for why a out of focus image was used since it can represent that the characters never slow down or a never ending chase.

The fact that dicarpio is wearing a pilot uniform is different from is casual clothing in the previous poster and given the fact that the posters would been realised at the same time it would make the fact that he is a con artist much clearer.
