Analysis of album advertisement posters.TRANSCRIPT
Here is an album poster of Katy Perry’s, One of the Boys.
The image in the background is incredibly busy and ties in to the image on the front of her
album cover being of a different angle of the same scene.
The actual album cover is also featured on the poster so it can
be recognised by those who wish to go out and buy it.
The image of Katy on this cover only takes up about a quarter of the page and has captured her
in a full body long shot. This allows the viewer to establish her entire outfit as well as the setting and sets the vibe of her album. The cute quirky summer
garden setting connotes her album as being up beat, fun and also quirky. Although the facial
expression of star is rather solemn and intimidating this highlights her confidence and strong personality, to counter balance the very girly childish
surroundings.Even though the background is so busy and detailed the focus of the viewer is still on the star,
as she is in the foreground illuminated just slightly more
and stands out brightly.
The writing on this poster, of the album details, take up about half the page and are bold and striking. The name of the artist is in the largest and most appealing font with the bright pink writing and white outline. The font used
matches that of the album and is quite cutesy, feminine and playful. The title of the album doesn’t stand out that clearly on this poster, as the writing is very small and the use of pale blue doesn’t really contrast well with the blue sky in the background. I think the album title is so small as the most important aspect is that Katy has a new album and since she has a very well established fan base many of her fans
will simply buy whatever she sellsOther information that is included on the poster is a no.1 hit that the album includes and the release date of the
album. The release date is a crucial piece of detail as this is how fans know when they can buy the album, and so the use of bright white writing against the dark green makes this information bright and bold.
In very tiny writing at the bottom of the poster there is also a website address for accessing Katy’s website. This information is included so fans can find out more about their star and get information about album releases in the future. I think the reason for having the writing so tiny is because most people are aware of websites and shops
where they can purchase this item.
The colour scheme of this poster matches that of the
album and consists of primarily pink, blue and
white. These colours reflect a young, feminine and up beat
artists and album. The consistency of the poster and
album help maintain a set image for the album and
artist and makes the album more recognisable to the
public as there is a direct link between them.
This is the poster for Florence and the Machine’s new album ‘lungs.’ The
imaged used on the front of this album is the same as the one used on the front of the CD in an enlarged form.
This aids the continuity of the poster to CD and helps viewers recognise the CD
when purchasing. The image of Florence on the advert is
her in a mid-shot and filling the majority of the poster. The pose of the
image is very striking and I little shocking with the use of lungs
appearing to be outside her chest. The purpose of making the image striking is to draw the attention of the viewer and
make the CD memorable to them so they go on to buy the album and take
full notice of the advertisement. The editing style used on the image
makes it almost appear as if it has been drawn or painted and adds a rustic and
artistic approach that reflects the unique and voice of this star.
Florence has her head turned to the side in this shot and appears a little sad and thoughtful. Connoting meaningful
and sorrowful messages within her songs. Her identity is also concealed a little on this poster as you cannot fully see and recognise her face creating a sense of mystery and vulnerability a
timid character. In the background of the image there is visibly some sort of under growth and
flowers. The use of natural surroundings suggests a natural earthy side to this artist and contrasts with the
colour of her hair and pale skin.
The name of the artists is featured at the very top of this poster and is in her signature font, almost appearing hand written. By having her
name at the top of the poster the eye is drawn to this first and we are forced to know
who she is and then associate it with her image below, subsequently also the CD image.
The title of the actual album is fairly large in this poster and takes up more space than the name of the artist. The font is bold clear and
punchy, so people are clear on what the album is called. I think such a contrasting and bold is required so the shocking photo on the
cover makes sense and so the title is memorable.
Other information included on the cover is the release date of the album, however this is in quite a small but, yet central to the poster and seen by the viewer as its under the bold
title. In very small writing the advert also includes hits that are featured on the album and that will probably be recognised by the
general public. The purpose of including these songs is to entice those that already like some
of her music and tempt them to listen to more. It also has on the poster the available formats for the CD, so people know how they can acquire it. An important detail to actually
sell lots of albums.
The colour scheme of this poster is mainly black, dark green and brown shades. These tones make the poster appear rather dark and a little spooky but create a
mystical edge to the poster and make it stand out as not being of the generic pop genre with insipid and vibrant shades. These colours also reflect the artists style
and the unique raw edge to her voice and songs. The use of a dark background also makes the white writing stand out even further as its bright and bold in
comparison. These tones also fit in with the references to nature and her natural beauty and natural sound.
This is a poster of Marina and the Diamonds’ album ‘The family jewels.’
the image of marina used on this cover is the same as the one of her used on the album and so once again fits with
the continuity of them linking together. The image used on the poster is a close
up of Marina’s face laid down and tipped back in slightly a provocative
manner. Her mouth is slightly open and he eyes are looking forward to the viewer with an intense stare. This
image fits with the idea of the male gaze and the objectification of her, it’s set up to appeal to males by exposing this artist in a sexual light. Her position is vulnerable and there is a mystery to how her body is also positioned. With this image I think Marina is trying to
appeal to a male market by appearing desirable and also to woman by making
them want to be her. This image expresses that her album is a little unusual and controversial and will appeal to fans who want to listen
to modern and original music. The background of this image appears to be that of material from an old sofa
or pair of curtains and connotes the ideas of retro style and vintage.
Connoting Marina’s individual style and music style as retro too.
A further image used on this poster is that of her new single ‘Shampain’ which is featured on the album.
Marina’s pose in this picture is far more playful yet still with a cheeky seductive
twist as her teeth are gritted and exposed.
The title of this artist is very bold and clear placed directly in the eye line of
the viewer and impossible to miss. This technique was vital for Marina as its her first album and so she was advertising herself in this poster not just her new
album. The album title in comparison is rather
small and cramped at the top of the page. The font used for this writing is
consistent with that used on her album and is her signature font. Repetition of the font creates her identity as an artist and in my own poster and Digipak I will
use the same font. The style of font could be described as playful and
relaxed. It appears almost as it has been scrawled on by the artist herself with a
thick felt tip giving it a personalised feel.Further writing on the poster is of four
hit singles that are included on the CD to promote the album to people who may be fans of these songs and want to try
more, or remind the public of this artists work. The promotion of the new single ‘Shampain’ is boldly advertised on this poster to get people interested in its release. So the public know how they can acquire her album or single the
poster also specifies that it is available to purchase on iTunes. The colour scheme of this poster is primarily a pale green-
brown shade, pale pink and cream. This theme of delicate tones compliment each other well. The connotations of
these colours are femininity with the pink and a youthful innocents with the other natural tones. They express the
music as not being highly fast paced but mellow and tuneful. There is also a faded appearance to the posted
making it appear a little dated which also ties in with the retro theme of the background.
