A new reference listing of Beattie postcards I: real photo series Royce WILES [email protected] Collectors appreciate the value of hand lists, catalogues and the like more than anyone else. Without the guidance of a comprehensive listing it is not possible to have an overview of how individual items from our collections fit into the large corpus of material. Postcards for me are no exception. This short article is to announce my preparation of a cumulation of images from, and details about, the real photo (RP) series of William Beattie (1864-1931). I have attempted to provide an illustrated hand list—i.e. a systematic listing for reference purposes—of the RP postcards published by this early New Zealand-based photographer (a separate listing of the printed cards is also under preparation). Why are such listings necessary? The images on the Beattie cards are important for many aspects of New Zealand social and cultural history and yet we do not have a single ‘complete’ physical collection of Beattie cards, instead (as well as the private and inaccessible collections of members of the New Zealand Postcard Society) scattered copies are held in some library collections around New Zealand, with a few images even individually catalogued in library holdings on-line. This draft hand list attempts to provide access to as complete a collection as possible of the Beattie RP images. As far as I am aware no attempt has been made before to compile a complete illustrated listing. The full hand list is around 230 pages long, mainly because I have devoted one full page to each of the cards. I have scanned, copied or otherwise found a way to obtain an image of as many cards as possible, to provide access to the complete set of known images in one place. This listing provides systematic access to the images for the first time (however, there are gaps in the images I have). A low resolution PDF version of the draft hand list is currently uploaded to the Society website (for members only and not for public distribution). My request is that members download the listing and help me by filling in gaps in information or images: I will include here below my ‘complete’ list of Beattie RP cards as a starting point. If anyone has cards not listed, or can scan cards for which I have no images yet that would be enormously helpful. Creating the hand list To begin the hand list I used the immensely helpful and pioneering articles about this series prepared by Alan Jackson and published in the New Zealand Post Card Society’s Postcard pillar (details below). In addition, I have drawn on the examples of these cards that I have been able to acquire (mostly through on-line TradeMe auctions) since 2009. I have also been able to source from the internet images of some of cards not otherwise known.

Collectors appreciate the value of hand lists, catalogues and the like more than anyone else.

Creating the hand list

To begin the hand list I used the immensely helpful and pioneering articles about this series prepared by Alan Jackson and published in the New Zealand Post Card Society’s Postcard pillar (details below). In addition, I have drawn on the examples of these cards that I have been able to acquire (mostly through on-line TradeMe auctions) since 2009. I have also been able to source from the internet images of some of cards not otherwise known.

I prepared a 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) scan of each card to which I have direct access, mainly, to preserve the images in a published format. Postcards which I have not seen directly are marked with an asterisk (*) before the title. In most cases I have reproduced the card somewhat larger than the original published versions so that the quality of the images and the wealth of visual detail they provide is available in one place. In some cases I have had to use images of lower resolution as a temporary measure until such time as a higher quality image is available.

There are (no doubt) a number of gaps in the listing, which is in part what makes the preparation of a comprehensive listing even more challenging. Some cards have dates on them, some are undated, some cards are numbered but the numeration sequence is not fully understood as yet and more research is needed, although it seems likely the publisher prepared numbered subseries of views of particular locations. Until we have a more complete listing of the cards it will be difficult to know exactly how the numeration systems functioned.

Previous documentation

I began to collect Beattie cards (both the printed and real photo types) because of the high quality of many of the images, I was mildly frustrated not to be able to find a reference listing to know how particular cards fitted into Beattie publication history. I then began to prepare (piecemeal) my own systematic listing but then discovered on the New Zealand Post Card Society’s website (Members’ area (under ‘Research’)) a series of articles (PDF versions) of Alan Jackson’s vital work in this direction (Alan was helped by other collectors as well). I have combined the information in those articles with my own collection, adding in scans of the front and backs of all the cards to which I have access. I have also reproduced those articles as appendices in the hand list, such documentation is too precious and hard to get access to. Below is a chronological listing of all the cards known to me and including all the cards identified by Alan Jackson.

The scans of articles by Alan Jackson made available on the New Zealand Post Card Society website do not have any pagination, so in the hand list I have had to refer to those with makeshift abbreviations indicating only the article. Subsequently the New Zealand Post Card Society index 1983-2013 appeared and I have added as footnotes below the exact page numbers for anyone who has access to those publications.

1. ‘The postcards of, William Beattie: [part 1]”, Alan Jackson, articles from issues 57 and 58 of the Postcard pillar (starting February 2002) (referred to here as AJ 57);1

2. ‘[The postcards of, William Beattie]: part 2: “real photo” postcards’, Alan Jackson, Postcard pillar 58 (includes the first listing of the types of backs and catalogue of the cards) (AJ 58);2

3. Untitled articles from issue 59 to 66 of the Postcard pillar (AJ 59/66);3

4. ‘William Beattie and local publishers’ by Alan Jackson, Postcard pillar issue 60 November 2001, (AJ 60);4

The New Zealand Post Card Society index 1983-2013 also lists the following articles but I have not yet been able to see them:

5. No. 75, p. 10-11;6. No. 100, p. 64 (Waimangu Geyser, Rotorua, various photographers of, cards by Beattie).

Overview of Beattie’s postcard production

There can be no better general outline of the history of the output of W. Beattie than the cogent summary already published by William Main and Alan Jackson in their 2005 book “Wish you were here”: the story of New Zealand postcards (Wakefield: New Zealand Postcard Society, page 42) reproduced below (with permission) but without the illustrations.

William Beattie (1864-1931) was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1878 his family emigrated to Hobart, Tasmania, where he assisted his elder brother in a photographic business. In 1894 he moved to Auckland where he married Evelyn lsobel Green. From 1897 to 1900 Beattie was in partnership with Sanderson in Ponsonby Road. Together they issued a series of stereoscopic views featuring gold mining in Thames. About 1901, Beattie went into business on his own where amongst other activities he offered lessons in photography and services to tourists. His first postcard series appeared in 1904. The same year he was one of several photographers who applied to the copyright authorities in Wellington to register a series of photographs showing the Waimangu Geyser in action. A few years later he purchased land in Shortland Street where he had constructed a three-storey concrete building for his expanding photographic business. His son William Barbour Beattie, who was also

destined to become a skilful photographer, recalled in later years witnessing the arrival of the American Great White Fleet into Auckland Harbour from the roof of these premises in 1908. Beattie's post- cards can be divided into two basic types: a) printed postcards, printed in N.Z. or Germany from 1904 on; b) real photo postcards, printed in N.Z. from 1908 on. In general, his postcards are of high quality in terms of both photographic skill and postcard reproduction. Many of his real photo postcards are of great historical interest today, not only because of their photographic excellence, but also because so many of them depict significant contemporary events (such as the construction of the North Island Main Trunk railway line or the visit of the American Fleet to Auckland). For this reason, his real photos are especially valued today by collectors. Besides real photo postcards, of which there are many, he issued at least two printed series of postcards. The first was a black and white series (printed locally). Later came a series (both black & white and coloured) which was called the "Moa" Series and was printed in Germany. These mainly feature the scenic attractions of Rotorua, the Coromandel and Auckland. He was one of the first to place trust in local printers for editions of his postcards. While most of his printed postcards do not seem to be so highly valued as his real photo cards, they are well executed and often full of interest. He appears to have stopped producing postcards around World War 1. After the war he began abdicating some of his photographic responsibilities to his son. Finally, in 1926, he sold his building in Shortland Street and retired.

Arrangement of the PDF hand list

As detailed above, W. Beattie published printed postcards from 1904 onwards and real photo postcards (i.e. genuinely photographic ones rather than printed versions) from 1908 onwards. The complex history and interrelationships of the images is not yet fully documented, as a preliminary step the cards are arranged in the hand list chronologically, in the sequence of the dates printed on the cards. It is likely however (given the different backs used for some cards) that the most popular cards were repeated a number of times. Sub-arrangement (when more than one card has the same date) is then by strict alphabetical sequence (ASCII order) based on the titles written onto the cards.

Some cards are not dated; those are arranged at the end of the chronological sequence in strict alphabetical sequence as ‘Undated’ cards.

Backs of the real photo cards

The backs of the cards are indicated using the system already set up by Alan Jackson (types A to D)—Alan’s comments from article 2 above are cited below. Some new types of backs (named here as E to G) have been included below. A few cards also have blank backs. It seems likely that we will be able to work out a sequence of these backs, certainly the “C” type becomes dominant in the later cards.

A

“EMPIRE pre-printed back. This was imported double weight photographic paper, which postcard collectors refer to simply as card. IT was designed specifically for producing RP postcards. The backs were already printed before they reached Beattie’s hands. Possibly produced in Australia (note the Kangaroo in the logo).” (AJ58)

Found on around three dozen cards with dates from 1908 and 1909 only.

B

“Pre-printed with serifed ‘POST CARD’. On the evidence of the postal rates quoted in the upper right corner, this form of back may have been printed in the UK; or possible New Zealand. On 16 December 1907, the NZ inland postcard rate was reduced to 1/2d, whereas previously it had been 1d both inland and abroad; the same division of rates had already been in force in the UK for many years.” (AJ58)

Found on six cards so far, all from 1908.C

“Rubber-stamped with double-line ‘T’ device and ‘PENNY STAMP’. Impression applied (by Beattie himself?) to the back of plain photographic paper. The ‘PENNY STAMP’ inscription is puzzling. It may have been prepared prior to December 1907, when the inland rate was reduced, but it would have been applied only to Beattie’s RP postcards and there is not evidence so far that these were produced prior to January 1908.” (AJ58) The first card found with this back is dated 01.01.1908, it continues in use until at least 24.08.1915 (BOUND FOR TRENTHAM).D

“Rubber-stamped, with ‘W.B. & CO./A.’ logo and ‘MOA SERIES’. This is the only form of back indicated the publisher. As for the ‘MOA SERIES’ imprint, Beattie apparently regard his RP postcards as a continuation of the earlier printed ‘MOA’ series.” (AJ58)

Found on cards from 1908 up to 1910 (20.6.1910) only so far.E
