Jews are commanded to be happy duringthe Hebrew month of Adar that continuesuntil March 23. As you can see from all of thephotos in this issue, there were no shortagesof Purim celebrations in Indianapolis. Alsothe Jews of Indy got a jump start this yearwith all of the hoopla surrounding the SuperBowl. A party atmosphere was pervasive. Here’s one nice photo demonstrating this(right center) taken by Bobbi Frankovitz.

Before I have to get serious thinking aboutPassover which begins at sunset on April 6this year, the following is excerpted from myeditorial dated Feb. 14, 2007.

There are plenty of good reasons forbeing happy besides having been savedfrom Haman’s hangman. One is a recentstudy showing that laughter helps ourhearts. The Jan. 5–7 USA Weekend had aspecial report on longevity. It begins withthe famous quote “laughter is the bestmedicine.” It went on to say thatresearchers from the University ofMaryland Medical Center found that people with heart disease were less likelyto laugh off potentially stressful situationssuch as a waiter spilling water on them.

Continuing, it says recent research indicates that laughter is also linked to the healthy function of blood vessels. The more chuckles, the more the bloodvessels dilate, increasing blood flow andpotentially reducing risk of atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries. Concluding, the article advised: “So this year, make aconscious decision not to take everymoment of every day so seriously.”

Other ideas for bringing more humorinto our lives come from emulating children. Perhaps going back to one’splayful attitude from childhood is onegood way for adults to “lighten up.” Hereare some suggestions:

Read cartoons and funny stories. Listento a comedian perform. Play with petsand/or little children. Play childhoodgames such a cards and board gamesand/or go to the park and swing on aswing, slide on a slide, or play in the sandbox. Sing and dance. Give yourself permission to laugh. Play with balls andprops. Be around others who like to jokeand are funny. Write your own “humormantra” – a word or phrase that remindsyou of something funny.

A few months ago, there was a newsarticle on Laughter Yoga, a sidesplittingnew fitness fad that’s part traditional yoga, part improv and all silliness. The following quote is by Jeffrey Briar whofounded the Laughter Yoga Institute inLaguna Beach, Calif.

“Most people think they have to feelgood first in order to laugh. But you can startfrom nothing, even start feeling unhappyand just laugh as a form of exercise, andhappy feelings follow…If you are laughingwith a group of other people, fake laughtervery quickly becomes real.”

Finally, it doesn’t hurt to look at cuteand funny photos especially those of otherslaughing. Exhibits A and B: photos of Leahand Sophia Glickman (p. 2 top; L-R)daughters of my nephew and niece,Sam and Ali Glickman who live inPhiladelphia. We had their wedding photoin our Sept. 12, 2007 issue.

The wedding took place outdoors conveniently in the gardens of the hotelwhere the out-of-town guests roomed. There was a lot of dancing at the receptionand the young friends and relatives of the bride and groom continued their celebration well into the early morning.A lot can happen in four and a half years.

And who could resist smiling when seeing rainbow-colored challahs (p. 2). Letthe joy and happiness exude!

Queen of red carpet delights at BJE CentennialCelebration

Hundredth birthdays are reason for aparty, and on March 3, Indianapolis’s Jewishcommunity gathered for the CentennialCelebration of the Bureau of JewishEducation (BJE). Integral to Indianapolis’svibrant Jewish life, the BJE is the oldest,continually-running, communal Hebrewschool in the United States.

Providing quality Jewish education tothe children of Indianapolis through itsafter school program as well as its ownpreschool and kindergarten, the BJE is also known for its comprehensive adulteducation program, as well as the MaurerLibrary, a branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Library.

The BJE’s annual Purim Ball served tohighlight its centennial birthday (see photo:cover, lower-right, and caption, p. 3). TheIndiana Roof Ballroom shimmered withsilver tablecloths that March night when Idonned my standard issue black dress and

joined close to 500 supporters, includingmany of Indianapolis’s rabbis, to mark theoccasion. Ball gowns of every hue in therainbow glimmered throughout the crowd.

The evening’s program began with afilm montage of the BJE’s history, thenfeatured a fundraising auction with livelybanter by host Laura Steele of Q95 radio, and Mark Roger and Miriam Dant, BJEboard members and co-chairs of thePurim Ball’s planning committee.

Despite its centenarian status, the BJE’schoice of entertainment proved it is anythingbut stodgy. As waiters cleared our plates,we sat rapt, waiting for the evening’sheadliner, Joan Rivers. Known for hermultiple plastic surgeries, as well as heroutrageous, unedited banter, at 78 Riversshows no sign of slowing down. Thequeen of the red carpet, who appeared onCelebrity Apprentice and hosts the showFashion Police, Rivers still delights withedgy riposte aimed at the rich and famous.

She recounted a phone call in which herfriend, Julie Andrews, post-vocal cord surgery, asked Rivers if she,Andrews, should resumesinging. (Imagine Rivers imitating Andrews’gravely voice.) “No!” Rivers answered, yelling into the mic.“Don’t sing!”

Rivers told us a story about NicoleKidman, a friend of her daughter Melissa. One day Kidman, wearing a red dress,

stood next to Joan, who wore a mustard-yellow frock. Rivers said Kidman lookedlike “ketchup” and she like “mustard.”“We’re condiments!” quipped Joan, whodescribed Kidman as standing by clueless.Rivers jokes turned cringe-worthy as shepoked fun at Kirk Douglas and Dick Clark, both stroke victims.“Don’t talk,”she urgedthem.“Just shut up and wave!”

Amidst the celeb-bashing, Rivers recountedthe story of her life. To her credit she didn’tskip over hard times, specifically the dramasurrounding her 1980s Fox talk show. EdgarRosenberg, Rivers’s husband and a produceron the show, struggled with heart diseaseand depression. Fox executives concernedwith ratings issued Rivers an ultimatumforcing her to choose between her showand her husband. “It was a ‘Sophie’sChoice,’”said Rivers. She chose Edgar.

Rosenberg’s mental health continued tospiral down, and he committed suicide. Her father gone, Melissa, Rivers’s daughter, shut down and stopped speaking. Awidow in her 40s and with her career inshambles, Rivers vanquished all pride andreturned to the work that had given her astart – small nightclubs.

Her message? “Walk through any door,”she said.“Try anything. Life can turn on adime, both for good and for bad, so don’t

Posting the Past

This has been quite a week. We are nowin the month of Adar, the month of Purim.Purim is the happiest of our holidays, and we are commanded to increase ourhappiness from day to day for the wholemonth. It is true that life isn’t always easy, but a little (or a lot) of happiness can helpmatters greatly. When we are happy automatically our problems seem smaller, and we have more energy to tackle them.So I’ll share with you one of the many stories from this week. I hope it will bringyou happiness too.

The Torah says that everything thatHashem made in this world has a use anda purpose. Of course, this isn’t alwaysobvious, but if we are patient, we eventually see that everything has it’s timeand place. I saw this, recently. I went toour local hospital to visit the sick and helpthem do mitzvahs, this time accompaniedby three grandchildren, Shneur, who is 8,Chaya Mushka, 5, and Nechomela, 3.

We have a great time working together. They give out to everyone leaflets aboutMoshiach and the weekly Torah portion, and wish everyone a speedy recovery.Theybring big smiles to a lot of sad faces. However, children are children, and theywould rather play or look at the computer,so I have to give them a little bribe to getthem to come with me. I promised them acan of soda from the vending machine atthe hospital.

We did the first two wards, and thencame to the vending machine. Theyimmediately reminded me of my promiseto buy them a soft drink. I don’t like junkfood, and tried to bargain with them. Ioffered to buy them one can, and theywould share it. That didn’t go over toowell. I next offered to buy two cans, for theolder children, and they would share withtheir younger sister. That didn’t workeither. I try not to fight useless battles. Ijust smiled and gave them money for threecans of soda. They were happy, and so was I.We did the third ward. They were very busy, drinking soda and making people happy.

We reached our last stop, the Geriatricward. These are all older people withchronic health problems who can’t manage at home, or even in a regular oldfolk’s home. Some of them can hold aconversation and some of them can barely say a word. I help most of the mento put on tefillin every day, and we arealways happy to see each other.

We arrived there before supper and theywere all sitting together in the dining

room. I brought my grandchildren to visitan older lady from England who doesn’thave too many visitors. She was delightedto talk to my grandchildren in English. They in turn were happy to be getting somuch loving attention. Soon the sugarfrom the soda pop reached their brainsand added more energy. The next thing Iknow Chaya Mushka and Nechomelawere putting on a whole performance, showing off all the songs and dances thatthey know, plus a few more tricks that I’venever seen them do before. The patientsand staff were delighted, and so was thegrandfather. Just thinking about this nowand remembering so many smiles on somany faces brings tears of joy to my eyes.

The moral of the story? Even though I try to avoid junk food and white sugar,Hashem created them (or at least the raw materials from which they are made). So like everything else in our world, theytoo have their time and place and canwork wonders.

Now is the time for the great wonders ofour final redemption, which we eagerlyawait. So do some extra mitzvahs (especiallythe mitzvah to be happy in the month ofAdar) to bring Moshiach, now!

EVENTS(continued from 5)Why Faith

MattersBY RABBI DAVID WOLPE

Does prayer “work?”This I know: If yourise from prayer a kinder, deeper, betterperson than you were before, your prayerhas been answered. ~ March 9, 2012

We are in the Hebrew month of Adar, the month associated with joy. Joy is thefeeling we get with wakeful gratitude: wesee the world’s blessings and feel thankfulfor them. Joy is appreciation with wings. We all have challenges and pains and trials; but on this day, let’s pause for joy.

~ Feb. 27, 2012The Hebrew [word] for soul, nefesh, is

related to the word for rested, nafash. There exists a tranquil place inside oursouls; we cannot live there at all times but we must renew it or lose our serenecenter. After all the work and worry, grantyour soul a day of peace, let it open petalby petal. ~ Feb. 24, 2012
