BIOIMPEDANCE SCALES

1. Introduction.

In this post we will discuss the scales bioimpedance, an essential element in our way to

achieve the objectives:

What is it?

These scales use a non-invasive method is based on measuring the electrical properties of

the human body, in the composition of the various tissues that form and the total water

content of the body.

How does it work?

We assume that water is a good conductor of electric current. Our bones, blood vessels

and muscles has a lot of water, so easily the current passes through them. On the other

hand fat is a poor conductor and generates resistance to current flow.

What does it measure?

The scales bioimpedance determine the lean mass (muscles), from the measurement of

lean fat, the scales can determine other through equations such as body fat, body mass

index, basal metabolic rate, bone mass (see table comparison).

How to use it?

Each scale has a different procedure and therefore ideally read the instruction manual,

which if they meet all scales is that for correct measurement have to meet a series of

standards:

• Do not perform strenuous exercise at least 24 hours before

• Empty your bladder before testing

• You must precede fasting for about 3-4 hours

• You should not take caffeine, tea or diuretics previously

• Should not be performed in women during menstruation

• Must be removed metallic elements
