Possessive Adjectives

Objectives:

To explain what possessive adjectives are and to practise their use.

Page 2: Possessive Adjectives Objectives: To explain what possessive adjectives are and to practise their use

Possessive Adjectives

The words for my, your, his/her, in French are slightly more complicated than in English because of the genders.

We have 3 words for each so for example

MY can be:

MON

MA

MES

Can you find out why?

Page 3: Possessive Adjectives Objectives: To explain what possessive adjectives are and to practise their use

Possessive Adjectives

MON: in front of masculine nouns

MA: in front of feminine nouns

MES: in front of plural nouns.

Ex

La table ma table

Le livre mon livre

Les cassettes mes cassettes

Possessive Adjectives

But you have to say: your and his or her as well : here is how it goes:

Masculine nouns

Feminine nouns Plural nouns

MY mon ma mes

YOUR ton ta tes

HIS/HER son sa ses

Page 5: Possessive Adjectives Objectives: To explain what possessive adjectives are and to practise their use

Possessive Adjectives

As you can see from the table there is only one word for his/her:

sonson in the masculine, in the masculine, sasa in the feminine and in the feminine and sesses in the in the pluralplural

Ex:

Sa table can mean his or her table (table is feminine)

Son copain can mean his or her friend (copain is masculine)

Ses amis can mean his or her friends (amis is plural)

So there is no way of knowing who these things/people belong to. In French the important bit is to know whether the object is masculine or feminine.
