Music Category Information Package

(Eligible to Primary and Secondary Students)

Creativity Connectedness Conversations

First a bit of background… The Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival aims to raise community awareness, enhance mental health literacy and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction issues in young people. The competition also hopes to allow primary and secondary students to connect with one another, enhance their help-seeking behaviour and provide the opportunity to express their creativity in a meaningful way. It is envisaged that the festival will continue to run each year to enhance the use of creativity in engaging and connecting our young people, in order to create positive conversations about the issues of mental illness and addiction problems.

…here’s what you’ll need to do Primary and high school students are invited to perform (as a

soloist, a band or an orchestra) live music of any genre, either

original or cover work, the music performance must be under six minutes in duration and consist of no more than twelve

participants (e.g. for choirs). It can be an instrumental or vocal piece and does not necessarily have to have the word

In the Grand Final, judges select the winner and the associated

school will receive a trophy and a comprehensive mental health resource package that can be used to benefit the students and school community. All schools and/or participants will receive a Certificate of Participation from Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services. All participating schools in the Music Category will also be rewarded with a minimum of two places for their school staff to

attend the Youth Mental Health First Aid training. Upon

for some of their students.

Select entrants might be requested to perform at other appropriate festivals.

Suggestions for Topics The theme of the musical piece can be very diverse. It can simply be a piece of music that “meant” something to the performer(s) e.g. ‘enhances my motivation, ‘makes me happy’. It does not have to have a song title or lyrics that portray a specific disorder. It can also address the promotion of mental well-being or aim to reduce stigmas associated with mental illnesses.
