2. JOB PURPOSE

To work collaboratively with Director of Education and Research, Lecturer in Palliative Care and Practice Development Facilitator in Palliative Care in:

Delivering clinical based education for all Hospice staff and volunteers, which will encourage continuous workforce development and facilitate the highest standards of care for patients and their families in the palliative care phase of illness and at the end of life

Delivering clinical based outreach palliative care education programme at all levels for health/social care staff including interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate courses

Promoting and facilitating practice development programmes within the Hospice

3. DIMENSIONS

St Columba’s Hospice is a specialist palliative care unit. It is an independent charity in contract with NHS Lothian. It is committed to the highest standards of care for patients with active, progressive, far-advanced disease and their families. It has an In-Patient Unit, Community Palliative Care Service and a Day Hospice. The Hospice has a staff of 150 and additionally has approximately 500 registered volunteers. The Hospice and the Education and Research Centre are located at Trinity on a beautiful site overlooking the Firth of Forth. The Hospice Strategy views education and research as a key component of its clinical service. The team at the Education and Research Centre runs a comprehensive in-house programme of education and practice development for all staff and volunteers and an outreach programme of palliative care education for health and social care professionals and other carers. This includes an interdisciplinary MSc in Palliative Care, Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care and Graduate Diploma run in partnership with Queen Margaret University. Students on these programmes may be members of St Columba’s Hospice team, but often may come from other generalist or specialist palliative care services in Lothian, Fife, the Borders and other parts of Scotland. The team at the Education and Research Centre are also involved in teaching of pre-registration students from local universities. The team participate in collaborative projects with NHS Lothian and other agencies. Study tours are organised for a range of international palliative care professionals. The team is also involved in staff support, including clinical supervision.

The Education and Research Centre plays a lead role in facilitating and promoting research within the Hospice and is currently supporting the Hospice becoming a research active hospice. A strategy for research is being developed with focus on developing research capacity within the Hospice and increasing research activities and outputs. The Education and Research team has strong collaboration and partnership with established research teams in palliative care. The team at the Education and Research Centre comprises a Director of Education and Research (18.75 hours), a Lecturer (37.5 hours), a Hospice Practice Development Facilitator (30 hours) with additional support from a Personal Assistant/Course Organiser (30 hours) and Personal Assistant/Projects Coordinator (7.5 hours). The Education and Research Centre also has a team of volunteers. Although the team undertake a large percentage of the specialist teaching, many members of the Hospice interdisciplinary team contribute to the teaching programme. The Hospice has excellent teaching and learning accommodation and equipment based in the new St Columba’s Hospice Education and Research Centre. There is a new purpose-built lecture theatre, two refurbished seminar rooms and a well-stocked clinical library incorporating a reading room and computer zone. A librarian on contract with Napier University staffs the library one day per week.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

St Columba’s Hospice aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with progressive, far-advanced disease and to support their families and carers. Allied to and complementing this role is the promotion and sharing of education and research on palliative care. The purpose of the Department of Education and Research is:

to support the delivery of high quality patient and family care at the Hospice through the provision of an organisation-wide programme of education and practice development for all staff and volunteers that meets the needs of the organisation in relation to local and national strategies

to promote a philosophy and culture of life-long learning in the Hospice

to support the advancement of palliative care more widely through an extensive outreach programme of evidence-based palliative care education for health/social care professionals and carers working in a wide range of settings e.g. other hospices, acute hospitals, community, oncology, care of the older person and independent/social work care homes

To support staff within the Hospice through clinical supervision

To support the advancement of palliative care locally, nationally and internationally through promoting and facilitating research within the Hospice and in collaboration with established research teams in palliative care.

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

Work collaboratively with the team in the market research, curriculum development, management, delivery, assessment and evaluation of the outreach education programme which includes an interdisciplinary MSc in Palliative Care and degree level studies.

Work collaboratively with the Director of Education and Research, Hospice Practice Development Facilitator in designing, carrying out and evaluating practice development programmes within the Hospice. Support the delivery and evaluation of an organisation-wide programme of palliative care education.

Work collaboratively with the Director of Education and Research, Hospice Practice Development Facilitator, Staff Development Group and the wider team to develop and sustain a culture of learning

Take a lead responsibility for the design, delivery and evaluation of specified components of the outreach/ in-house education programmes

Use a sound knowledge of adult education and palliative care to plan, deliver and evaluate educational initiatives employing a wide range of innovative teaching/ learning approaches and methods

Design, implement and evaluate learning materials for face-to-face teaching and online learning

Take part in providing academic support to students

Contribute towards the maintenance of the specialist clinical library to include selection of books and journals

Promote advanced and specialist practice in education and palliative care through acting as a role model

Lead specific committees/practice development projects in relation to the needs of the organisation, its clinical governance framework and the postholder’s specialist skills

Promote the work of the St Columba’s Hospice Education and Research Centre through collaborative relationships and informal and formal marketing mechanisms.

Actively contribute to the wider development of palliative care education/practice through: o Leadership/membership of professional working parties and groups o Dissemination of practice through publications, conference papers/posters o Involvement in educational/clinical research and audit

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK

The post holder will work autonomously, generating and managing their own work load whilst working closely with the Director of Education and Research and the team within the department of Education and Research as well as other colleagues of all grades and disciplines within the Hospice and other agencies Direct assignment of work load comes from the Director of Education and Research influenced by the national and local agenda on both specialist and generalist palliative care and health and social care professional developments. The post holder’s work load is also self-generating through adopting a proactive approach. This will allow them to identify the educational needs for specialist and generalist palliative care in hospice, hospital and primary care through market research and close collaboration with clinical colleagues. Regular Performance Appraisal and Personal Development Plan (KSF) will be negotiated with the Director of Education and Research

Managing a complex, wide ranging workload meeting the educational needs for palliative care of those working in a variety of clinical areas in hospice, hospital, community and the independent sector. Being responsible for providing innovative, dynamic education in palliative care both at a generalist (Certificate to Degree level) and advanced/ specialist level (Masters level) which meets the needs of clinical staff of all disciplines. Physical: Use of keyboard and clinical work as appropriate Mental: This post demands a high level of organisational skills, time management and personal and professional leadership. It also demands an ability to recognise the complexity of developing and maintaining a culture of life-long learning within the organisation. It is essential that the post holder is able to manage a complex and wide range of projects/areas of work while working to short timescales. The post holder needs to be able to analyse, synthesise and evaluate complex material in developing lecture material and in the assessment process. The post holder requires to maintain and continually develop a critical knowledge not only of adult education, but also of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of specialist palliative care and the integration of these bodies of knowledge into educational and clinical practice. The post demands a high level of critical awareness and concentration to interpret strategic documents and develop local protocols and education in response. SUMMARY OF CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

TITLE: Lecturer/Practice Facilitator in Palliative Care REPORTING TO: Director of Education and Research LOCATION: St. Columba’s Hospice Education Centre, 17 Boswall Road, Edinburgh, EH5 3RR JOB STATUS: Permanent BAND/SALARY: Band 7, £31,383 – £41.373 pro-rata to hours worked HOURS: Part Time (22.5 hours per week) PENSION: Contributory pension schemes in operation.
