DRAWING I

1. Drawing I: example 1 22” x 30” 2015

Still Life from Direct Observation, Using charcoal and a view finder, students were asked to choose a portion of the still life and render it using chiaroscuro techniques. They addressed composition and considered the negative space. They had to employ the use of contour & weight of line, value, contrast and proportion which included technical measurement.

2. Drawing I: example 2 22” x 30” 2015 Still Life from Direct Observation

3. Drawing I: 22”x30” 2015 Still Life from Direct Observation. Using charcoal and a view finder, students were asked to break the still life into parts zooming in closer in each breakdown. This forced them to look at the still life deeply and create an interesting composition by questioning what they saw and considering the negative space. They had to employ the use of contour & weight of line, value, contrast and proportion which included technical measurement.

4. Drawing I: example 1 22” x 30” 2015 Charcoal Figure Drawing: Students were asked to combine their gestural and contour skills to draw most of the figure in the environment. They had to employ the use of value, contrast and proportion. They were also required to include hands or feet.

5. Drawing I: example 2 22” x 30” 2015 Charcoal Figure Drawing 2D DESIGN

6. Color Theory 11” x 14” 2011 Color Theory and Repetition/Pattern. Using acrylic paint students reproduced a pattern using a variety of color schemes.

7. Notan 7A 3-8” x 8” squares 2015

Exercise in harmony: Students created an abstract shape and designed three compositions using only this shape. The project focus’s on how the edge is defined by the repetition of shape. This explores the power of positive and negative space, rhythm, balance, dominance and movement. A: design runs in one direction

8. Notan 7B: The negative space should be dominant.

9. Notan 7C: The positive space should be dominant

10. Exploding the Square 8” x 8” 2015 Exercise in harmony, unity and variety. Students create an asymmetrical design that maintains the corners of the square and explores positive and negative relationships allowing one element to dominate.

11. Concept Collage Part I 8” x 8” 2015 Students selected a social issue to guide the creation of a collage that depicted fore, middle and backgrounds. They were evaluated on the formal attributes of the composition as well as the strength of the depiction of the concept.

12. Concept Collage Part II Diagramming 10-8” x 8” ‘s 2015 Students created 10 diagrams, each exemplifying one element or principle. 1. Line, 2. Contrast & value 3. Rhythm 4. Mass 5. Balance 6. Repetition 7. Curvilinear or rectilinear 8. Color 9. Shape 10. Emphasis

13. Opaque Line example 1 11” x 14” 2015 Using only black paper: 75 black lines to create a non-objective composition.

14. Opaque Line example 2 11” x 14” 2015

15. Transparent Line example 1 11” X 14” 2015 Using only straight lines cut from packing tape, create a non-objective composition.

16. Transparent Line example 2 11” X 14” 2015 INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING

17. Value Study: Rag Painting 11”x15” 2014 Example 1: Oil, gesso on paper. From direct observation, students used thinned black oil paint to cover the paper. Then they used rags to subtract the black paint to reveal the light of a white object. Reinforcing their drawing skills, this assignment was designed to build confidence in creating value with the new medium of oil paint by completing several studies in one class period. Technique: subtractive method to create value.

18. Color Theory Fruits/Vegetables 11x15” 2014

Example: Complimentary colors used to mix neutrals with the addition of only white. 10 studies. Technique: alla-prima, color mixing, proportion

19. Abstraction from the Still Life 24 x 30” 2014 Example 1: Oil on canvas. Students were presented with the problem of a changing still life. Bones and drapes changed every class meeting. They used the color palette of a German Expressionist. Concepts of abstraction, composition, limited palette, space and layering were addressed. Technique: glazing.

20. Figure Painting from Grisaille Example 1 22 x 30 2014 Example 1: Students approached the figure using grisaille, and then applied warmth the composition. Composition, proportion, value and contrast were addressed. Technique: grisaille and glazing.

21. Figure Painting from Grisaille Example 2

22. Visualization II: 28” x 40” 2014 Students created a work based on a personal issue regarding personal choices. Technique: cumulative skills, content, figurative & literal representation and glazing to create layering.
