COVER PAGE PACKAGING

My name is Fakier and have been

a practising creative for the last 12

years. I had an interesting career in

a sense that I am categorised as a

career freelancer. Not by choice but

due to chance.

Page 463. A odd number. Does it mean I did 63

interviews, 63 holidays, 63 ways of eating

spaghetti, did 63 outragious things in my life,

lied 63 times, told the truth 63 times.

Who knows.

It is a odd set of numbers but it is beautiful in

it’s design simplicity. Does it mean it is better

than 49, 75, 36 or 42. Who knows.

63 is 63. Does it mean or say or anything.

What do you think.

“Be sensitive to how your project will influence your client’s believe in you”In September 2012 I was freelancing at Salient in a DTP and finishing artist capacity. I design and create,-for print, a non-foods catalogue for the OK Franchise Division. I also assisted in other projects for the Shoprite Group in Africa which include finishing work on AFCON posters and more.

And just before that I was at Just Design Agency also DTP and finishing artist capacity on a few projects, until a senior finished artist was contracted. I assisted on the new I&J sweet chilli packaging, finish art on the new Nederburg 2-glass pack for South-Africa, as well as packaging Savannah Australia, New-Zealand and Africa.

Admakers International. What can i say. In July 2012 assist with overflow work in this very busy design studio. I assist in design and layout, DTP and finished artwork across various marketing materials and work in strict accordance to the brand’s guidelines and standards.

Achievement Awards Group.

Between the period of January and July 2012 I was contracted by the Achievement Awards Group on a internship too poduce printed and electronic

communications by designing aesthetically effective artwork that meets the client’s communication requirements. I also produce web and flash modules for maintaining client web initiatives and websites.

I was contracted by the Faircape Group of Companies for the period of July to October 2011 as a web administrator/developer and graphic designer. My responsibilities were to design and build microsites, design HTML newsletters, event invites and general mailers. Design all marketing and advertising material, corporate IDs for all Faircape departments and external clients. Design and create flash for website content. Management of all databases.

This was good project.

And then I went back to another 6-month internship at an audit firm called Mazars doing all in-house design which including: conference design, event invites and public all relations, corporate rebranding, technical and training books, HTML mailers, e-learning and all design related queries.

In the same time period I was freelancing for a company called African Legends which had recently expanded into confectionary. I designed the various logo product tags and labels, packaging and event banners.

About meMy name is Fakier and have been a practising creative for the last 12 years. I had an interesting career in a sense that I am categorised as a career freelancer. Not by choice but due to chance. I am married with 2 kids, the joy and bane of my life. Mostly joy. I enjoy what I do and give 200% to any job, contract or freelance.

I also designed 3D lenticular and illustrative designs.

And at the start of it all began with my internship as a trainee creative director/graphic artist at the ad agency The Teamworks. In this capacity I was mentored in all aspects the creative process of conceptual design to post-production.

An English campaign to show big, bold flavor and attitude of aconfectionary brand.

If you understand that Robisons Handmade Sweets is not a chocolate manufacturer, but a family brand that wants to share the love for all things sweets with the rest of Africa.

The client wanted a relevant and engaging identity to help reconnect people with the sweets of their childhood.

YOUCANNOT

NOTCOMMUNI-

CATEBranding is an important part of internet commerce, as branding allows companies to build their reputations as well as expand beyond the original product and service, and add to the revenue generated by the original brand.

When working on branding, or building a brand, companies that are using web pages and search engine optimization have a few details to work out before being able to build a successful brand. Coordinating domain names and brand names are an important part of finding and keeping visitors and clients, as well as branding a new company.

Coordination of a domain name and brand names lends identification to the

idea or image of a specific product or service, which in turn lets visitors easily discovery the new brand.

Branding is also a way to build an important company asset, which is a good reputation. Whether a company has no reputation, or a less than stellar reputation, branding can help change that. Branding can build an expectation about the company services or products, and can encourage the company to maintain that expectation, or exceed them, bringing better products and services to the market place.

Defining Your BrandDefining your brand is like a journey of business self-discovery. It can be difficult, time-consuming and uncomfortable. It requires, at the very least, that you answer the questions below:

Get a great logo. Place it everywhere.

The Coffee ShopThe client, L Albertus, started a new coffee shop venture and she wanted a brand that is all about coffee. A logo that can be added on to crockery, foam cups, take-away bags. I gave her logo incorporating both the name and the representation of her business.

AmaswidiThe client, African Legends, an import|export company that deals with trinkets recently started a confectionary venture. The client wanted a brand that says “made in Africa for African”. So I gave the the Amaswidi which means sweets and the logo is a elephant which is arepresentaion of Africa.

Write-on CommunicationThe client believes in the written word, in all it’s prim and proper form. The client wanted a brand that is timeless and but can grow in the modern world

Butterfly Kidz CoutureThe client required a logo for her labels, tags and invoices. The client makes and sells children clothing.

Logo of Fakier Jacobs I wanted a brand that is both modern and vintage. A brand that can

crossover as a design or typographical entity.

In this magazine layout wanted to create the symmetry between type and image. The type had to show off the cohesiveness of the image and vice versa. I also wanted negative space to enhace both pieces and I think I have achieved that.

Freelancing is great. It gives you the ability to work your own hours, choose the clients you work for and never have to answer to a boss again.

You’ve heard that all before, right?

Well, what if I told you that the entire phrase “freedom as a freelancer” is complete shit and you’ll never be truly free as a freelancer?

The truth about freelancingSome people might not like this harsh reality, but the simple fact is this – freelancers have bosses, deadlines, work hours & stress just like 9-5 workers do.

Yes, there are benefits to freelancing, just like there are drawbacks to freelancing, but what I want to debunk in this post is the notion that when you become a freelancer, you become free and independent.

That’s bullshit.

Every client you get is your boss. Once you sign a contract and begin working with them, you’re actually working for them. What they want, what they request, what they ask to be changed – you’re just reacting to their actions.

Want more time off to do your own thing? Freelancers generally work more hours than your average 9-5 worker does. You might get to choose to work in the morning or in the dead of night, but the hours will suck.

Remember that check you got every Friday from your boss? Yeah, those days are gone. Freelancers tend to get paid late by clients – or even worse, not at all – on a regular basis. The feast or famine cycle is real and it does a number on your pay days. ~ Taken from www.guerrillafreelancing.com

APICTURE TELLS A

THOUSAND STORIESPhotographs, either still or moving, rely on emotional processing. To

the mind, they are the meaning themselves , and therefore need

no translation. Of course, any photograph is the product of an

artist’s conception. He selects, frames, composes,

determines exposure, angle, distances, depth, etc.,

to present whatever emotional message

he desires. Nonetheless, a photograph

has an immediate impact on

the viewer, with no

intervening step between

perception and

reaction.

...Online advertising isn’t about mountains of facts or reams of research. It’s about distelling this raw opportunity

into a compelling and profitable advantage.

Compensated Banner AdsAs we saw above, paid banner ads cost money, but they will eventually pay off if you choose the right ones. You need to ensure that the website produces the amount of traffic that they say and that they possess your advert placed in a way that invites people to click without being too pushy. You also want to select a site that doesn’t house a lot of other banners on the same page as yours or that we now have no competitor links on the same page. All in all, banner ads can end up being profitable for your website if you go about it the right way.

Step 1Received the brief and started with the sketches - I had to created 3 variants to showcase movement

Step 2Scanned the images into Illustrator where I started filling into with color

Step 3Took the design from Illustrator into Photoshop where I started fillingit with gradients, depth and small creative touches

Step 4The final designs were sent away to a niche company specialising in 3ddesign. This is what the final product, with 3d movement looks like.

The first packages used the natural materials available at the time: Baskets of reeds, wineskins (Bota bags), wooden boxes, pottery vases, ceramic amphorae, wooden barrels, woven bags, etc. Processed materials were used to form packages as they were developed: for example, early glass and bronze vessels. The study of old packages is an important aspect of archaeology.

The earliest recorded use of paper for packaging dates back to 1035, when a Persian traveler visiting markets in Cairo noted that vegetables, spices and hardware were wrapped in paper for the customers after they were sold. Iron and tin plated steel were used to make cans in the early 19th century. Paperboard cartons and corrugated fiberboard boxes were first introduced in the late 19th century.

In 1952, Michigan State University became the first university in the world to offer a degree in Packaging Engineering. Packaging advancements in the early 20th century included Bakelite closures on bottles, transparent cellophane overwraps and panels on cartons, increased processing efficiency and improved food safety. As additional materials such asaluminum and several types of plastic were developed, they were incorporated into packages to improve performance and functionality.In-plant recycling has long been common for production of packaging materials. Post-consumer recycling of aluminum and paper based products has been economical for many years: since the 1980s, post-consumer recycling has increased due to curbside recycling, consumer awareness, and regulatory pressure.

Importantly when you consider that more than 70% of purchasing decisions are made at the shelf. Add to this the fact that supermarkets can contain on average 40,000 packs to choose from, then that pack has got to work hard.
