Small-scale redevelopments. Large existing plots are subdivided into several smaller plots and filled up with one-family houses, leaving little to no open space.

Omotesando

Land-use conversion of former brown field sites. Previously inac-cessible areas in central locations.

Shinonome

Incremental renewal by replacing existing outdated and unprofitable buildings on-site.

Urban structure of hatamoto and lower samurai areas of Edo. This detail from a survey map produces in 1888 when the urban structure had changed little from the Edo period. shows area just west of Edo castle. Inside the outer castel moat on the right are Hatamsto areas, while to the left of the moat are lower samurai and commoner districts. Tokyo 1/5000 scale Survey Maps produced 1888.

Redevelopments of the old city fabric into th ehigh rise complex. The site amalgamated more than 400 smaller lots. Offices, Resi-dences, Hotels, Shops, Museum, Movie Theater, TV Studio, School, Temple and Storage

MarunouchiRoppongi Hills

one block is divided into small plots prior to concrete development

further development can happen inte-pendent from each other and enables permanenet change while keeping a functioning urban structurethere is a shriving tendency in nowadays vienna to merge plots and develop one block at once.

leagal height is generally between 16 and 21 meters and mostly lower for some parts of the inner area fo the block.

the main types within those blocks are

- corner building; mostly residential- comercial lowrise; e.g. on two mearged plots - standard type with a second development in the back area of the site.- lowrise development of general use according to leagal hight at that section.

EXHORBIANT INHERITANCE TAXES-It was almost impossible to maintain generation after generation a residence with large lot in a good neighbourhood. SUBDIVE - make room for the appart-ment buildingsTO SELL - the whole lot were sold to a real company, huge condominium on the site

The most of greenery was lost, even-thought it`s one of the most important asset in keeping the urban environment livable and comfortable. The historical division of the lots disappeared. It represents the vast majority of small-scale redevelopments in Tokyo today.

Edo had a cleary defined concept of the planned pattern. There were 4 main tips of residences - Daimyo, Hatamoto, Low - grade warrior districts and Commoner districts. A large part of Edo were Samu-rai districts 70%. The land was borrowed from shogunal government.

The base unit 60 ken (109 m), ratios 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3. The system was slightly adjusted to the topography. The exam-ple of the base unit 7-10 x 20 ken (18 x 36 m).

Small singular houses with one or two storeys surrounded by green on an sparate buildinglot.

single family homes and allotments

Free conectec singular buildings for several hundreds of people as an extention to the grown citystructure.

community housing of 60s and 70s

Buildingstructures larger than the old cityscale, organized around huge courts.

community housing of Red Vienna

Highly densed Buildingtype, in closed blocks in an strict system of orthogonal streets.

LEARNING FROM AKHHOSPITALIKA, WIEN, STEFAN GRUBER, 201O

Lost in sameness

The research was concentrate on the building of the new AKH, which is seen through the human eyes perception as "a labyrint of corridors". The main issue was to understand the "megastruc-ture" and the transfer process in its depths.

To find a way to read the complex building, I used book "Learning from Las Vegas" by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown published 1972. Las Vegas is not the subject of the book. The symbolism of architectural form is. The special approach to architecture of communication over space, achieved through style and signs. The key elements of my research were the navigation system of the people in these spaces. But what is wrong with the space?

The whole hospital is designed as highly sophisticated system of complex infrastructure, includ-ing transport of various liquids, sanitary goods in containers... the principle was how to quick-ly and easy move the case from point A to point B. In the contradiction, we can`t talk about its impact on the orientation of patients, students and others.

The space are created by prefabricated panels, seats, ceiling, doors, etc. After thousands of same door behind which is another hall, or a large staircase, or perhaps a library or anything? The sameness absorbs small differences and reject our attention to orientated ourself in the spaces. We are entirely depend on the signs and symbols. People are like a "blind sheep" walking and waiting for a sign and turn. Moreover, it is clear that the organization of the circulation is confusion and not all the sites are well marked. As a result some places are easily overlooked or not used because of missing guidelines.

The mapping used in the 5 floor, which is the entrance level is considered as a representative of situation in the hospital. The method is used to refer about places that are bewilderingly sign. Few example of the specific location. The North street is not that used. The large staircase is badly sign, and one could not be sure where to get by it. The special location are known by the users – library, study spaces. The pharmacy need to have yellow food print in the floor that patients are not afraid to go in, etc.

SCHWEDEN PLATZMAPPING, VIENNA IKA, WIEN, ANTJE LEHN, 201O

The square is based in the center of the Vienna. It is an important traffic junction. First step of the research was series of visits of the square. As a result of this experience was created the narrative map of the area. The subjective perception was implement into the collage. On the series of the image we can see step by step of the manipulation with the images to the final narrative map.

My own perception of the area is supported by the video illustrating the atmosphere of the square. The video shows different layers of a movement of cars, buses, bikes, other public transports and pedes-trians with its different speed. We can see the pre-vailing left - right movement together with its rhythm. The rhythm is mainly illustrated by its acoustic atmos-phere. The first part of the video demonstrates the dif-ferent perception between the movement in the layer to see the movement of the layers. All those factors are brought to its extreme. The second part is an sim-ple collage made by its mirroring. We perceive the moving layers and the composition of the static ele-ments as an building, times to time pedestrians, cars, trams.

Almost all cities in Czech Republic have prob-lems with grey commuterdoms. Theses places don't have real identities. The main issues are both the poor quality of the open space around and the lack of social services.

SMALL BIG HOUSE “NOHY-BOKOM”FA VUT, BRNO, FRANEK, 2007

What's happening with the city centre ? It starts to be an open air museum where only tourists go.

The location is inbetween the historical center and the Spilberg hill with the old castle. The tower provides a new view over the city. We want our project to be provocativ and to point out the cities devel-opments

Revitalization is a deliberate, organized, conscious effort by members of a group to create a new culture. Regarding Europan 10, it relates to the sites where the main question of mutation is: in spatially and socially disqualified areas, how can urban life be intensified?Linear spaces can play a strong role in the structure of existing urban areas, but how can their development be linked to their surrounding, thus reinforcing their role as public spaces?

PUNTIGAM HYBRIDLANDSCAPE

A flexible system with a rich variety of plots occurs between the two water lines. Existing settlements of food wholesalers and galleries in the North are the start point for a further development of this areas identity as a production area.

New functions such as “U-pick” activities and fish farming will settle in the southern part followed by the existing flower market.

To reactivate and develop the railway track, an old industrial track, small scale water energy from the Muhlgang and solar energy will contribute. The future usage will be both for public and freight transport.

The North-South direction in the project site is very dominant and consists of two waterlines, the old industrial railway track, the building settlement, the road system and the existing bicycle path along the river Mur.

The site is lacking an East-Western communication and is not connected with the neighbouring areas. Therefore the living areas on both sides of the waterlines are not connected with each other and the current usage of the site does not attract visitors.

The new proposed East-Western direction is based on the typical way of parting up farm land that is still readable in the landscape further south. It is also adapted and connected to the existing infrastructure.

A new pathway along the canal Muhlgang connects to the existing bicycle path along the river Mur and closes a circular communication between the two waterlines. The existing North-South directions are being given the opportunity to develop in a cross direction so that an interaction in the East-Western direction occurs, like a zipper.

The water system, infrastructure, existing green structure, producing activities, new public functions and leisure inform each other. Along the river Mur an area is dedicated to an autonomous development of flora and fauna. The character of the Muhlgang is artificial and the canal is therefore more suitable to be used for the industry. The proposed park pathway that follows it is stricter shaped.

Between the water lines new water collecting and cleaning systems are proposed according to the industrial settlement. In the northern part of the area the atmosphere is more urban and denser in terms of build mass. In the southern part the densification of the landscape is instead emphasised.

BUILDING TYPOLOGY

First in winter time the green house helps in heating the other building by capturing the suns natural warmth. On nights and cloudy days, the other building will warm the green house.

People will get a beautiful view from their office or living space when looking into the lush green garden. The combination of building against green house, thus generates an energy efficient hybrid.

The museum Plein has many main entrances to the building (it doesn't have any main entrance). It's a quite large square where people lose connection with the building around. The S. Muzeum is the City's most significant modern art museum. The existing building is a classical museum building, well-known for its natural light. It's being regenerated and extended by Bethem Crouwel architects from Amsterdam.
