AMANDA H. IRVINEMasters candidate of Urban and Regional Planning [email protected] of Michigan - Taubman College (818) 515-0057

Influenced by the issues of southern California urbanism, Amanda grew up interested in the art community and the spaces around her. While she has a background in critical urban thinking, she is currently focusing her efforts on representation through design, considering in her work how spatial design impacts the social, cultural, and environmental landscapes.

Mapping the Wolverine Train Line

We traveled on the Wolverine Train Line between Ann Arbor and Detroit, each mapping a different component of the experience. I mapped the dichotomy of the built against the open spaces along the train line, comparing the viewsheds and land uses in a 1/2 mile buffer

Street Sections: Texture + Elevation

In creating my street sections, I chose two locations in close proximity to the Wolverine Train Line. In the first, I utilized realtsic textures to reflect my previous work on built against the open spaces. For my second section, I experimented with creating a section in an area with many elevation changes.

For the final portion of the rail line study, we formed groups. Our concentrated on a redesign both train stations as better transit oriented developments (TODs). Focusing on the Detroit Station, I created a plan view and rendering of a reimagined train station, with greener attributes, such as grass pavers in the parking lot, bike lanes, and brick sidewalks.

This project exoplored the landfill, considering those in southeast Michigan. In the largest group of the class, four of us studied Riverview Land Preserve in Wayne County, MI. In order to understand the context, I created a series of infographics about the waste, and a context map to understand the area.

In further exploration of the Riverview area, our group created GIS maps of the land use patterns within a 1.5 mile buffer. To grasp the local demographics, we chose to expand the buffer to any census tracts that connected with those within the initial buffer, in order to get a real sense of the people who may experience the area

In splitting off into individual projects, I chose to take a closer look at the southwest corner of our initial group area (see the small circular diagram). I created a physical model, on the principles of layering buildings and natural areas with circulation. Focusing in closer yet, I created an illustrative map on the area highlighted in green

The closer neighborhood perspective led to section and rendering visualizations of the area. I chose to combine mine witha shadow study, displaying how different parts of the neighborhood, highlighted in blue and red, would appear throughout the seasons
