POR T FO L I O

P a l l a v i T h a k u rretail graphic product research

As a student of Literature both in graduation and post graduation, I have always wondered how our past shapes the present sensibilities and future aspirations. Furthering my education in Design, my perception of the correlation between Language, Art, and Culture has acquired deeper significance. I believe learning is a continuous process which perpetuates curiosity and the ambition to contribute and achieve. I wish to continually confront my boundaries and expand my experience. With formal education in Literature and Design I am able to integrate content development and artistic expression, be it in the form of Visual Art, Communication, Product or Spatial Design.

My sense of language and aesthetics has roots in past experiences and with the knowledge acquired through Design, I strive to create some-thing for the future which adds to the “quality of life”. Thus I aspire to work in an environment that will utilize all my experiences, knowledge, and skills, and harness my ambition to a contribution for a meaningful objective.I endeavor to incorporate that pursuit in all walks of my life as I work relentlessly towards a contribution to a better future for all.

Currently I am working on a research project as the Project Co-ordinator for the Digital Hampi Project (a DST initiative) at NID’s R&D Campus, Bangalore.Hampi is a phenomenon alive with History and Art. Apart from being a social, religious and cultural centre of its time, it was also one of the important trading centres of the world. In this, I am hoping to contribute to the National effort in extending the understanding, documenta-tion and re-creating of this complex cultural phenomenon; and be a dynamic part of re-visiting the history of Hampi.

F(o)urniture

Brief- To design modular furniture for children (4yrs-12yrs).

Concept - The age group of 4yrs-12yrs is when the child learns the most basic of things, begins to establish his identity that remain with him for the rest of his life. Since this stage is so important, why not make him explore his very environment in real life where he is acquiring new ideas, notions and beliefs.

Design Solution - To make the room another book to learn, a canvas to paint, blocks to build, where he can explore his thoughts and ideas in real. He can reset, rearrange or even redesign his “own” place.

Product Design

Retail Design

Layered Merchandising Project

Brief- To re-design the departmental store “Shoba” on the principles of Layered Merchandising. Layered Merchandising - To create comfort-able zones for each customer type, hence it is a kind of “stores within a store”concept.

Concept - The concept was derived from the differences in the shopping behaviors of men and women. Men are in words of Stanford University Researcher Christian Wheeler are “ purpose driven” and women are “possibility driven”.Thus the store is redesigned according to age group, sex and marital status. Departmental Store customers are categorised on the basis of the time spent, store area covered and money spent. The three categories are Quick, Fill-In and Stock Up, in ascending order of the factors mentioned.

Design Solution - The various categories of products are placed according to the researched psychology of the type of customers. The store is subtly has “layers” for Men, Women and Children sections.

Logo Design

Brief- To create Logo for a photographer, Ashish Thakur, whose photos have a fresh perspective of capturing the essence of what is not obvious.

Concept - The Logo was inspired by one of the photographer’s photo named, “hope”. It was a vertical shot of opened windows as seen from the alley between the buildings. Clearly the common place view was morphed into something beyond the mundane. Something was being let in or let out from those windows.

Design Solution - I wanted to display the lenses but differently, and to highlight the fact that he has in some way a distinctive way of looking at things.

Logo & Website Design

Brief- To create Logo for an event management company, “Purple Feather”. It has varied activities from organising formal and informal events to corporate and brand promotion. The company is based in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.

Concept - The design has evolved from the similarty yet the dissimilarity of letters “p” and “f”. If the hand and head of “f” are joined they form a “p”. And conversely if the curved edge of “p” is deleted, it forms “f”.

Design Solution - The interplay of the letters along with the obvious connotations of the words themselves were ntegral during the design process. Strong emphasis is laid on straight lines, vertical or horizontal, as it signifies stability and reliability.

Logo Design

Brief- To create Logo for a corporate event management company, “Sovi Live”. It mainly promotes brands in corporate offices. The company is based in Bangalore, Karnataka.

Concept - Somehow the “i” in both the words seemed to be the connecting link. A shade of green was used to signify the factor of living, growth and constant metamorphosis.

Design Solution - Since the “i” was the core of design, and the need to give a sense of dynamism was important. Sovi Live had to have that living, breathing and moving feel to its logo.

Logo Design

Brief- To create Logo for a professional photographer, Sneha Sawhney. She is based in Atlanta, US.

Concept - Its is Sneha’s personality that has inspired the logo. She is a nature loving, sensitive human being with a contagious smile. If she would not have had been a photographer, she would have been a social activist, surely. Her photos almost explore the”happy” side of things.

Design Solution - Her logo had to convey the effervescent nature she has. There is repetition of letter “s” which has been explored in the design.
