Welcome to St. Rose
This community was established by Bishop George
Lucas, former Bishop of Springfield, in the fall of
2008 for the celebration of the extraordinary form
of the Roman Missal (Traditional Latin Mass). If
you are not familiar with this rite, do not hesitate to
ask for help from the ushers.
To follow the liturgy on Sunday, you need a red
booklet (pews) and the Sunday proper leaflet
(vestibule). For sung Masses, you may also wish to
take a hymnal (vestibule) to sing along.
On weekdays, you need a Latin-English Missal.
They are available at Poppe‘s in Quincy & St. John
Fisher Bookstore in Jacksonville (see back of
bulletin). You may also follow the ordinary in the
red booklet.
Do not hesitate to make the responses along with
the altar boys, if you are able to do so.
To join the St. Rose of Lima Chaplaincy, please
call the parish office at 217-222-2511 or mail one
of the cards found in the back of the Church.
On Sundays and Holy Days, please come and
join us after Mass in the Church hall for
coffee and donuts.

Q: In the creed we profess on Sunday after the homily, we affirm
that Jesus is consubstantial to God the Father. What does it mean?
In the ordinary form of the Roman Missal the word consubstantialem Patri was translated as ―one being with the
Father‖. The new English translation recently approved returns to
the technical term ―consubstantial‖. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church says (#465): ―The first ecumenical council of Nicaea in 325
confessed in its Creed that the Son of God is 'begotten, not made, of
the same substance (homoousios in Greek and consubstantialis in
Latin) as the Father,' and condemned Arius, who had affirmed that
the Son of God 'came to be from things that were not' and that he
was 'from another substance' than that of the Father." In other words
Arius denied that Jesus was truly God.
The difficulty is that today ‗substantial‘ and ‗substance‘ are most
often used with quite a different meaning as when we say that a
meal was substantial or that the substance used to build this table is
wood. If the chair is also in wood, we would say that they are of the
same substance. However, 'being' and 'substance' aren't the same
thing. Being means 'existence.' ‗Substance‘ means, as a term in
metaphysics, the unique, singular identity of a thing.
Literally, the substance of a being is what stands underneath.
According to temperature and pressure, water can be solid, liquid, and a gaz. However underneath those changes in appearance, the
substance is unchanged. Wood is not the substance of the table as a
table can be made from other materials. Wood is the matter used to
make a table.
One text that might help clarify the concept is that of the Council of
Chalcedon in 451. In this text the word consubstantial refers to
Christ in two ways:
"We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach
people to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the
same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God
and truly man, of a reasonable [rational] soul and body;
consubstantial with the Father according to the Godhead, and
consubstantial with us according to the Manhood; in all things
like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father
according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our
salvation, born of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, according to
the Manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, only begotten, to
be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably,
indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each
nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person and one
Subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the
same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ;
as the prophets from the beginning [have declared] concerning Him,
and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself has taught us, and the Creed of
the holy Fathers has handed down to us."
Chalcedon's double use of consubstantial, with God and us, could
help clarify its meaning in the Nicene Creed. Our Lord, as consubstantial with us, shares with us that unique singular identity
which makes us human beings. When we profess that Christ is
consubstantial with the Father, "consubstantial" means that both
Father and Son possess the unique singular divine identity.

NEWS
40 DAYS OF PRAYER in preparation to the upcoming elections: 40 Days of Prayer started Sept. 20 and last
through October 30th. Prayer is the strongest Gift and
Power God gave us. Let's use it for the good of all
Americans. Please join us in prayer asking God to heal and Bless America once more. God promises to hear his people.
The words of 2 Chronicles 7: 14- "If my people, who are
called by my Name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and Turn from their wicked ways. Then will
I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal
their land."
Handicapped Access to Church: Last spring a concrete
ramp was built giving access to the southeast corner
entrance (bell tower). This week a chair lift was installed inside the church so that our church is now handicapped
accessible. We are still accepting contributions toward the
cost of this project. For more information, contact Father or
our Director of Development, Paul Geers (314)397-0791.
Library Project: We are planning to install a small library in the basement of the hall. Members of the Latin Mass
Community will be able to borrow books, CDs, videotapes
or DVDs for free. We got plenty of bookshelves but we
need some good men to help install them. We also need a few volunteers willing to help run this library. At the
beginning, the library will open after both Masses on
Sunday. Eventually, the schedule could be extended. If you
are willing to help, please contact Father.
