Discover popular funk musicians in Nigeria, and theSenegalese performers who use a rich mix of hip-hop,
reggae, and techno to sing about village life andwomen's rights. Find out about Belgium's long tradition
of comics and graphic novels. Learn about Iran's plans,
amidst all of its problems with the West, to encourage
tourism. Uncover the story behind manga magazines
(or comic books), which sell upwards of several million
copies every week in Japan. The wealth of information
inside this resource is sure to surprise even the most
seasoned pop culture aficionado.
Focusing on the cultural distinctiveness and diversity
of the modern world, this six-volume reference is designed
to meet the needs of today’s multicultural classrooms and
libraries. Thematic organization makes studying a broad range
of topics—from film and art to foods and fashions—ideal for students
of world history and culture. Appealing to a wide range of
audiences, the encyclopedia gives readers quick access to the
popular interests in countries and the world, all while offer-
ing critical insight into the influence of regional pop culture
on contemporary societies over the past century.
Beyond reflecting the tastes and attitudes of the people,
popular culture provides a lens through which one may better
understand a culture’s customs, value system, and core beliefs.
Each volume features a historical introduction to the region’s
popular culture in a broad context. Other useful features
include a comprehensive resource guide of print, electronic,
and organization sources; a full subject index; and numerous
color illustrations that richly document current popular life
and culture around the globe.

Five Volumes By Michael Ashkenazi and Jeanne Jacob
Here is a major new resource to help librarians with those frequent requests
for ethnic recipes they receive from students working on Multicultural
Studies assignments. This five-volume cookbook set is directly related to the
middle school and high school multicultural curricula. It will be an invalu-
able resource for multicultural, immigration, and foreign-language units. The
World Cookbook for Students fills the demand for more and different recipes
for all, not just selected, countries and ethnic groups. Although other cook-
books are available, and recipes can be found on the Internet, no in-print set
or series matches this resource in scope, depth, or authority.
Volumes are organized alphabetically by country name; if separate groups or
regions are covered within the country, the material is under the group/region
name alphabetically. Each country includes a brief introduction and gives an
overview of the type of foodstuffs, cuisine, and style of eating in a simple bul-
leted list. For each country/ethnic group, approximately five recipes are given
for typical dishes and holiday fare. Recipes total approximately 1,500. Each is
introduced and contextualized. Short glossary sidebars are interspersed.
Additional benefits include thumbnail maps and illustrations, an introduction
to the set, an annotated select bibliography citing both print and online
resources, an appendix with a list of recipes by region/country/group, and a
set index in each volume. Fact-filled sidebars provide numerous access points
into the material.
