I noticed the reference to Polyporus Pinicola in the box entitled "Picture of this second" and would like to record my experience with this remedy I first used about 3 years ago when Chikungunya (CKG) was an epidemic here in Sri Lanka.

I used the 200c potency in the Wet dose and observed that many patients were cured on the third day after taking this remedy.

I am copying a post I made on September 7 2007 where I gave a case history of this disease which affected my wife at which time I did not have the Polyporus Pinicola which I was able to get a few weeks later.

I would like to record my experience in the treatment of Chikun Gunya (CKG) which was first reported in Sri Lanka and which my wife contacted. This is a record of my experience in the treatment of this dread disease at first hand, first in the case of my wife and later in the case of over 50 patients all of whom were resident in the vicinity of my residence in Colombo where CKG seemed to be spreading from door to door at an alarming rate up to last April.

The disease started in the case of my wife with an acute pain on her heel which she complained of late in

Page 2: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

the evening of November 16 2006 and which I investigated carefully to ascertain if there was some wound which was causing the pain. There was however no reason for this pain and she went to bed early and around 3.00AM she woke up as she had a rigor with violent shivering and a temperature of around 103F. She took 2 Paracetemol tablets and by morning she was in a bad way with the temperature rising higher and 104F was recorded when an ice bag was used. Her temperature was not responding to Paracetemol and I gave her Oscillococcinum 200 in the wet dose every 3 hours and this seemed to be more effective as the temperature dropped within about 3 hours and stabilized by mid-day.

She complained of acute pain in all her joints and her Arthritis which I had treated successfully earlier had returned with full force and she was unable to leave her bed without assistance. She did not have any appetite and I persuaded her to sip liquids both warm and cold and she complained of an awful bitter taste in her mouth. I used Hypericum 200 for the pain in her body and Rhus Tox 1M which I had used successfully earlier for her Arthritis, all in the wet dose.

On the third day there was perceptible swelling of her legs and her ankles which was alarming to behold and I gave her Apis 6 in the wet dose and to my surprise this remedy reduced the swelling in about 6 hours. I also used it to help reduce the swelling of many other patient's limbs and they all reported positive results. Apis 6 is taken thrice daily.

Her condition deteriorated for a week during which time she had to be helped out of bed as her whole body ached and her joints were very painful. Her temperature stabilized within about 4 days and she had lost her appetite. She was not able to climb down the stairs and was confined to the upper floor.

Since there was every possibility of my contacting her disease I decided to use the only anti viral remedy that I had used successfully to prevent colds and used Gelsemium 30 in the wet dose twice daily. I am happy to record that this remedy protected me from contacting this dread disease which at my advanced age of 78 would have set me back many years. It was also helpful in preventing the members of over 25 households with known CKG patients to be protected from contacting this disease. I have no doubt that Gelsemium 30 prevents this virus from infecting others in the same household as it was impossible to prevent mosquitos biting me and others and thereby spreading the virus.

I had ordered Polyporus Pinicola (PP) which my Homeopathic colleagues in India recommended and had used successfully for CKG patients and received this remedy in the third week after my wife was infected. I then changed her medication over to PP 6 in the wet dose and she responded quickly to this remedy which was obviously more effective in treating CKG than the other remedies that I was using.

My wife was back to normal in a month although she had to be on the medication which comprised the following remedies for many months :

Arnica 30 Dose 1 teaspoonful twice daily Polyporus Pinicola 6 Dose 1teaspoonful thrice daily

The acute pains that characterize this disease left her in a month but the chronic phase of this disease continued for about 6 months when she complained of pains which occurred in various parts of her extremities like pin prick like pain in her toes and in her fingers which did not show any outward signs of any injury but which her nervous system conveyed to her brain as being real. This phenomenon is unknown as far as I am aware in other diseases where the patient is cured in a given time and does not suffer from any residual after pain. This after pain has been reported by other patients whom I have treated for CKG. Occasional swelling of the ankles was noticed and her Arthritis bothered her from time to time. Today over 10 months after she was first infected, she still seems to suffer from the after effects of CKG and this is true of other patients that I have treated.

I would like to record that the remedy Polyporus Pinicola which I received 3 weeks after my wife was first infected with CKG was discovered to be far more effective for the treatment of this disease, judging by the response of patients to this remedy which in some cases was dramatic. I used it in the 200c potency for

Page 3: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

patients who presented within a week after they were infected when they are in the acute stage of this disease. I used the 6c potency for others who presented later with the chronic symptoms and found that this was more suitable to reduce the swelling and the joint pains. The 200c showed dramatic results as patients who were barely able to walk who had caught the disease a few days prior were able to resume their normal life within 48 hours of their being treated with the 200c.

It is my hope that the patients who suffer from this dread disease in Ravenna and Cervia in North Italy will see this post and use Polyporus Pinicola in the manner that I have detailed above. Those affected would have already discovered that the drugs which they would already have been prescribed would not have helped them as drugs like Steroids and Antibiotics which are used by the majority of doctors have no positive effect and in some cases have even made a bad situation far worse especially in the case of liberal usage of steroids to treat CKG. Analgesics would have helped to control the pain and fever but this too would only have been effective in the short term as they do not offer a cure. Rest is essential and food must be taken as soon as the appetite returns. The intake of liquids is paramount in spite of the aversion to them that patients will experience.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the Wet Dose which I have referred to above I would like to repeat the instructions on how this is made. I have observed that the wet dose is best made with the remedy in the original Ethanol format instead of with the pellets already activated with the remedy.

2 drops of the remedy in Ethanol or 3-4 pellets of the remedy are inserted into a 500ml bottle of spring water which is shaken hard in the hand with a twisting motion to produce bubbling and aeration of the water. If no bubbles are noticed this is due to insufficient air space at the top of the bottle and an inch of water is poured out when it will bubble when shaken. This bubbling and aeration is Homeopathic Succussion and this must be done every time before each dose which is a teaspoonful is sipped slowly to enable the remedy to be absorbed into the body through the mucous membranes in the mouth.

I would welcome information from members both Homeopaths and patients who have either treated or suffered from this dread disease as this information will be very valuable in the treatment of CKG with Homeopathy. It is accepted that modern medicine has not discovered up to date, any specific drug or vaccine to treat this dread disease, the likes of which have never been experienced throughout the world up to about 2 years ago.Mosquito virus arrives in Europe

A debilitating tropical virus carried by mosquitoes has become established in Europe for the first time. The virus is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes albopictus

The Ministry of Health in Italy has confirmed about 160 cases of chikungunya in the Ravenna region in northern Italy.

Travellers have been advised to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

The European Centre for Disease Control urged pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses to seek medical advice before visiting the area.

The villages of Castiglione di Ravenna and Castiglione di Cervia have reported most of the cases.

The main symptoms of the patients were high fever and joint pain, as well as headache, muscle pain, rash and less frequently gastrointestinal symptoms.

One death was reported in a 83-year old individual with underlying medical conditions.

World first

Professor Antoine Flahault, who coordinates French research on chikungunya, said the Italian outbreak was

Page 4: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

a "world first" outside the tropics.

Writing in the Quotidien du Medecin journal, he said the extension of the virus beyond its Indian Ocean origins was "worrying without being alarming".

He suggested that the very high density of mosquitoes in and around Ravenna had fuelled the outbreak.

"The mosquito vectors (carriers) of this disease have been in Italy for several years. All we know is that increased temperatures and humidity make the climate more tropical and favour the proliferation of mosquitoes," he said.

The virologist said the situation in Ravenna was under control and measures had been taken to reduce the number of mosquitoes.

Chikungunya gets its name from a Swahili word meaning "that which bends up" because of the arthritic-type symptoms that leave victims stooped.

Symptoms usually appear between four to seven days after being bitten and can persist for several weeks.

There is no vaccine against chikungunya.

Treatment of Chikun Gunya (CKG)

Respected Joe,

Great information has been furnished by you. I just want to add one or two in this line. Polyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally powerful. One thing left out in your summary is Eupotorium Perf. This seems to be highly efficient as far as CKG is concerned. These have been used and hundreds of patients have been treated in Chennai. CHIKUNGUNYA  Homeopathic ManagementDr.Sunila  BHMS, MD(Hom)  Calicut. KeralaEmail : [email protected]    (Article presented by the author in the scientific seminar conducted by Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College. Calicut on 18.09.06 )

The Chikungunya epidemic currently attacked millions of people in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhrapradesh and Kerala. Chikungunya is not considered to be fatal. However, in 2005-2006, 200 deaths have been associated with chikungunya on Réunion Island and a widespread outbreak in Southern India (especially in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Kerala). Chikungunya virus is highly infective and disabling but is not transmissible between people.( recent researches reported tramission from mother to foetus)

French researchers claims that viral strains isolated from the Reunion and the Seychelles clearly show a mutation from its East AND Central African origin, the reason for the widespread outbreak associated with it. There has been a specific amino acid mutation in EI gene of the virus making it more deadly.

Chikungunya (also known as Chicken Guinea) is a relatively rare form of viral fever resembling dengue fever; caused by an alphavirus that is

Page 7: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

spread by mosquito bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito, though recent research by the Pasteur Institute in Paris claims the virus has suffered a mutation that enables it to be transmitted by Aedes Albopictus (Tiger mosquito). The name is derived from the Makonde word meaning "that which bends up" in reference to the stooped posture developed as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease.

EpidemiologyChikungunya was first described in Tanzania, Africa in 1952 following an outbreak on the Makonde plateau. The disease was first described by Marion Robinson and W.H.R. Lumsden. An outbreak of chikungunya was discovered in Port Klang in Malaysia in 1999 affecting 27 people. In February 2005, an outbreak was recorded on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. In Mauritius, 3,500 islanders have been hit in 2005. There have also been cases in Madagascar, Mayotte and the Seychelles.

In 2006, there was a big outbreak in the Andhra Pradesh state in India. Nearly 200,000 people were affected by this disease. Some deaths have been reported but it was thought to be due mainly to the inappropriate use of antibiotics and anti inflammatory tablets. As this virus can cause thrombocytopenia, injudicious use of these drugs can cause erosions in the gastric epithelium leading to upper GI bleeding (due to thrombocytopenia). According to the National Institute of Virology, Pune out of362 samples from Kadappa district in Andhrapradesh state 139 were found positive for chikungunya.

Over 2000 cases of chikungunya fever were reported from Maharashtra state, in March 2006. In Orissa state 5000 cases of were reported in February 2006. In Bangalore, there was an outbreak of Chikungunya in May 2006. In Tamilnadu, 20,000 cases were reported in June 2006. Earlier it was found spreading mostly in outskirts of Bangalore, but now it has started spreading in the city also.Over 800000lakh cvases were reported from Karnataka state. Over 20000 cases were reported from Thiruvananthapuram, Aleppey, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikkode district in Kerala state. 10 deaths have been reported from Aleppy district. 800 cases were reported from Cherthala of Aleppy district.300 cases were reported from Kollam district.

National Institute of Virology in Pune says that the strain in India this tie is different from what was found during 1963(the first outbreak was recorded in 1963 in Calcutta) and 1974 epidemic and 98% similar to the one found in Reunion. The NIV says the new outbreak is from the African Genotype introduced to India 5yrs back.  More seropositivity is found among the age group between 51- 55 years.

Chikungunya fever is caused by Chikugunya virus. They are spherical enveloped virions, 60 nm diameters and have single stranded positive sense RNA genome.

Characteristics of CHIKUNGUNYA virusVirus classification Group: Group IV ((+)ssRNA) Family: Togaviridae Genus: Alphavirus Species: Chikungunya virus

Chikungunya virus is closely related to O'nyong'nyong virus. O'nyong'nyong virus caused a major epidemic of arthritis and rash involving at least 2 million people in Eastern and Central Africa in 1960s. After its mysterious emergence the virus virtually disappeared leaving only occasional evidence of its presence in Kenya.

The chikungunya virus is spread by mosquito bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person infected with the chikungunya virus. Monkeys, and possibly other wild animals, may also serve as reservoirs of the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other humans when they bite.

Page 9: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito), a household container breeder and aggressive daytime bitter which is attracted to humans, is the primary vector of chikungunya virus to humans. Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) may also play a role in human transmission is Asia, and various forest-dwelling mosquito species in Africa have been found to be infected with the virus.

Aedes breeds in artificial accumulations of water. It needs only 2ml of water for breeding. It lays eggs singly. They do not fly over long distance, usually less than 100 metres. Eggs can resist desiccation for upto 1year. The eggs will hatch when flooded by deoxygenated water.Aedes can spread the infection to next generation.

Aedes is the first proved vector of a virus disease- Yellow fever. Human blood is preferred over other animals with ankles as a favourite bite area.

SymptomsAfter an incubation period of 3-12 days there is a sudden onset of flu-like symptoms including a severe headache, chills, fever (>40°C, 104°F), joint pain, backache, nausea, vomiting, petechial or maculopapular rash usually involving the limbs and trunks. Migratory polyarthritis mainly affects the small joints of the hands, wrists, ankles

Page 10: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

and feet with lesser involvement of the larger joints. Joints of the extremities in particular become swollen and painful to the touch. Haemorrhage is rare. There can also be headache, conjunctival infection and slight photophobia.Redness of eyes may be the first symptom. There may be difficulty in looking upwards

In the present epidemic in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India, high fever and crippling joint pain is the prevalent complaint. Fever typically lasts for two days and abruptly comes down. The disease has a biphasic course also. Following 1-6 days of fever, the temperature returns to normal for 1-3 days and then there is a second period of fever for a few days. In the second phase of illness 80 % of people develop maculopapular rash on the trunk and extensor surfaces of the limbs. After 6 to 10 days patients recover completely. However joint pain, intense headache, insomnia and an extreme degree of prostration lasts for a variable period, usually for about 5 to 7 days. Rarely arthralgia and morning stiffness may persist for months.

However joint pain, intense headache, insomnia and an extreme degree of prostration lasts for a variable period, usually for about 5 to 7 days.

Dermatological manifestations observed in a recent outbreak of Chikungunya fever are as follows:

• Maculopapular rash like ulcers over scrotum, crural areas and axilla. • Nasal blotchy erythema • Freckle-like pigmentation over centro-facial area • Flagellate pigmentation on face and extremities • Lichenoid eruption and hyperpigmentation in photodistributed areas • Multiple aphthous ulcers • Lympoedema • Multiple ecchymotic spots (Children) • Vesiculobullous lesions (infants) • Subungual haemorrhage.

Investigations• A few patients develop Leucopenia. • Elevated levels of aspartate aminotransferace (AST) and C-reactive protein

Page 11: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

• Mildly decreased platelet counts.

Diagnosis1.Isolation of the virus from blood. It is possible in the first 4-5 days of illness.  Sudden severe headache, chills, fever, joint and muscle pain are the commonest symptoms. The diagnostic tests include detection of antigens or antibodies in the blood, using ELISA (or EIA - enzyme immunoassay) or molecular techniques like polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The antibodies detected by serological assays like ELISA require an IgM capture assay to distinguish it from dengue fever

Differential Diagnosis1. Dengue FeverOf all the arthropod- borne viral diseases, Dengue fever is the most common. This infection may be asymptomatic or may lead to 1. Classical Dengue Fever2 .Dengue Haemorrhagic fever without shock3. Dengue Haemorrhagic fever with shock

The main vector is Aedes aegypti mosquito. The illness is characterised by a incubation period of 3 to 10 days. The onset is sudden with chills and high fever, intense headache, muscle and joint pains which prevent all movement. Within 24 hrs retro-orbital pain and photophobia develops. Other symptoms include extreme weakness, anorexia, constipation, colicky pain and abdominal tenderness. Fever is typically but not inevitably followed by a remission of a few hrs to2 days. The rash may be diffuse flushing, mottling, or fleeting pin point eruptions on face, neck and chest during the first half of the febrile period and a conspicuous rash that may be maculopapular or scarlatiform on 3rd or 4th day. Fever lasts for about 5 days.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever is confined exclusively to children less than 15 yrs of age. There may be plasma leakage and abnormal haemostasis, as manifested by a rising haematocrit value and moderate to marked thrombocytopenia. The fever may rise again producing a saddle-back fever curve. There may be generalised lymphadenopathy.

In dengue shock syndrome shock is present along with all the above criteria.

Page 12: POLYPORUS PINICOLAxa.yimg.com/.../2136761126/name/POLYPORUS+PINICOLA.doc · Web viewPolyporus Pinicola and Polyporus officianalis are used in Tamilnadu, India. Both seem to be equally

2. Yellow feverIt is a zoonotic disease affecting principally monkeys and other vertebrates. It shares clinical features of dengue fever but is characterised by more severe hepatic and renal involvement.. So death is more common in yellow fever than chikungunya.

3. Other viral feversMany of the viruses produce encephalitis, haemorrhagic fever or arthritis in various combinations. There may be high fever with backache and joint pain. Clinical features depend upon the type of virus causing infection.

a. SINDBIS virus infection: Transmitted among birds by mosquitoes. The disease begins with rash and arthralgia. Constitutional symptoms are not marked and fever is modest or lacking altogether.

b. MAYARO fever: Transmitted by Haemagogus mosquitoes. It causes a frequently endemic or epidemic infection of humans and appears to produce a syndrome resembling Chikungunya.

c. Epidemic Polyarthritis (ROSS RIVER virus infection): Constitutional symptoms are absent in many cases. Many patients are incapacitated by joint involvement.

d. Influenza: It is an acute respiratory illness caused by infection with influenza virus. Respiratory tract infection is accompanied by systemic signs and symptoms such as fever, headache and myalgia

4. Eruptive fevers like measles and German measles

5.West Nile Fever: West Nile Virus was recovered from the blood of a fever patient in Uganda in 1937. This virus is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes among wild birds. Humans are incidental hosts. Human infections are usually asymptomatic. Disease may present as a dengue like febrile illness with or without rash. Headache, myalgia, anorexia, nausea, epigastric pain, diarrhoea, lymphadenopathy may accompany the fever which lasts up to a week. The rash is maculopapular and non pruritic; unlike dengue. In its severe form it may cause aseptic meningitis or encephalitis especially in elder people and children. Rare

complications include myocarditis, hepatits and pancreatitis.

6.Japanese Encephalitis: First occurred in Japan as asevere epidemic in 1924. Japanese Encephalitis virus has been isolated from the culex mosquitoes and mansonia. Onset is rapid. Encephalomyelitis developes within 2-4 days. There may be fever, headache, altered sensorium, coma, convulsions, neck rigidity, C S F pleocytosis etc

Complications • Super added infection with bacteria• Meningo encephalitis• Death occurs in immunocomprised patients.• Myocarditis• PneumoniasComplications were observed due to injudicious application of certain anti-inflammatory drugs (as reported by www.chikungunya.co.uk)

PreventionThe best way to avoid CHIKV infection is to prevent mosquito bites.

There is no vaccine or preventive drug except homoeopathic medicines.. Preventive tips are similar to those for dengue or West Nile virus:

• Use insect repellent.• Wear long sleeves and pants. • Have secure screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out. • Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used. • Additionally, a person with chikungunya fever or dengue should limit their exposure to mosquito bites in order to avoid further spreading the infection. The person should stay indoors or under a mosquito net.       Mix coconut oil and neem oil and external application of it will prevent mosquito bite.

ImmunityOne attack confers life long immunity.

Homoeopathic ProphylaxisAs per the guidelines laid down by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the Organon a Genus epidemics has to be found out in the specific area and it could be the best to be found out in the specific area and it could be the best prophylactic remedy.

Many homeopaths consider Eupatorium perfoliatum as a preventive medicine for Chikungunya. The most commonly suggested potency as prophylaxis is 200C of Eupatorium perfoliatum. As per the reports the homoeopathic remedies useful for propylaxis are - Eupatorium Perfoliatum, Gelsemium, Rhustox, Bryonia Alba, Ars alb ,Aconite and Polyporus.

The Karnataka Board of Homoeopathic System of medicine announced Rhustox 200 & Pyrogen 200 as the Genus Epidemicus for Chikungunya cases. In Tamil Nadu Homoeopathic physicians distributed Rhustox and Eupatorium for more than 4000 persons as a preventive prescription.in Andhrapradesh Government distributed medicine to 2 Lakh people.

TreatmentChikungunya fever is usually self-limiting and will resolve with time. Symptomatic treatment is recommended after excluding other more dangerous diseases. There is no vaccine currently available for Chikungunya. Supportive care with rest is indicated during the acute joint symptoms. Movement and mild exercise tend to improve stiffness and morning arthralgia, but heavy exercise may exacerbate rheumatic symptoms.

Homoeopathic TreatmentAphorism 100-102 is dealing with the treatment of epidemic diseases. According to Dr.Hahnemann, a carefully observing physician can arrive so nearly at knowledge of the true state of the epidemic from the examination of even the first and second patients and can even find a suitable homoeopathic remedy for it. Dr. Hahnemann recommends investigating each epidemic disease as a new and unknown case and selecting medicine according to its symptom similarity.

Homoeopathy has a very good scope in the treatment of chikungunya. Initially indicated acute remedies may give relief which may be followed by constitutional remedy in order to get rid of post fever

Homeopathy offers many medicines which may help in Chikungunya. These include medicines like Eupatorium-perf, Pyroginum, Rhus-tox, Cedron, Influenzinum, China, Arnica, Belladona, Bryonia, Nux vomica, Sulphur etc. Eupatorium Perfoliatum Q (tincture, 3 to 5 drop dose) will remove the debilitating joint pains and cut short the intensity and duration of the disease. Other potencies may be used according to the intensity of the case. In Andhrapradesh medicines such as Eupatorium200 & Belladonna has cured number of cases.

This April my father-in-law returned from Tirupati after visiting his sister with an additional gift- high fever, severe pain in the joints. The pain was so severe that he could not drive his car for his weekly visit as an orthopaedic surgeon to a Hospital 10 KM away. The problem turned out to be Chikungunya. Many parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were experiencing an epidemic of this mosquito-borne disease at that time. For mosquito researchers like me Chikungunya was a less important viral disease, akin to Dengue but not deadly like it. The disease is caused by Alpha viruses and transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. It was first described by Marion Robinson and W.H.R. Lumsden in 1955, following an outbreak on the Makonde Plateau, along the border between Tanganyika and Mozambique, in 1952. There could be pain in the joints, fever, skin rash, fatigue and can be

cured with paracetamol and a week’s rest. In some rare cases the debilitating pain could be prolonged for a couple of months. My father-in-law was one of these rare cases. Death due to Chikungunya was an unheard of phenomenon. So I was not at all worried about my father-in-law. But after a few months when Chikungunya crossed Western Ghats and invaded Kerala, things appear to have changed for the worse. According to the media reports there have been 47 deaths attributed to Chikungunya in the state as of today (30-09-2006). Earlier, Director of Health Services denied it; Minister of Health and family welfare also followed suit in the Assembly. There was a walkout by the opposition over the issue! But the iron man of Kerala Politics and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was the last person to be convinced. Detractors of CPM see a political angle to the CM’s disbelief, as he and the Health Minister are in the opposite factions. Whatever it is, V.S. made a personal visit to the affected areas in Alleppey district. According to him, the doctors tried to distract him with medical jargons. They attributed the deaths to some other diseases with complicated names. But V.S. found people having the same diseases living happily in other parts of the state. He found that the deceased had Chikungunya along with other diseases. There was no denial from the medical experts. Coming back to the legislative assembly, the CM declared that the deaths were indeed due to Chukungunya. According to the media Health Minister Smt. P.K. Sreemathi was not present in the House at that time. But later, while interacting with the press, she completely agreed with the C.M. Again, the media discovered something sarcastic in her agreement. According to them her style was like ‘Brutus is an honourable man’.  Now it is the turn of people like me to come up with an explanation. Is it possible for Chikungunya to be murderous? The answer is a big ‘Yes’. Recent research by the Pasteur Institute in Paris claims the virus has suffered a mutation that enables it to be transmitted by Aedes albopictus (which is the predominant species in Kerala). This mutation has also believed to have enhanced the virulance of the virus.  In 2005-06, 200 deaths have been associated with chikungunya on Réunion island. Hence it is possible that the Kerala epidemic could be due to a more virulant strain of Alpha virus. But, the pertinent question is about the credentials of a Chief Minister to confirm this possibility just from circumstantial evidences. What happened to the so called virological experts at National Institute of Virology? Should somebody cringe before them with red carpet unrolled for an immediate scientific study and explanation? Being a mosquitologist I strongly believe that the best action to be explicitly and immediately initiated is mosquito control involving the community because majority of the breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes are in the backyards of houses.

Meanwhile, as usual, Homeopaths crashed into the scene. In a seminar conducted at Calicut, they declared the availability of an effective drug to cure Chikungunya. They didn’t just stop there. Instead, an allegation was shot at allopathy saying that some allopathic drugs could adversely affect a Chikungunya patient and even kill him. Then it was the turn of IMA to condemn the homeopaths’ allegation and challenged them to provide scientific evidence in support to their claim. Interestingly, the homeopaths projected the contents of the web based encyclopedia ‘Wikepedia’ as the solid evidence! I didn’ see any reply from the allopaths to this proof either! More interstingly, an advertisement appeared in the New Indian Express yesterday from a Chennai based homeopathy firm. According to them Chikungunya can be
