PIOVRA Objectives

• To Develop a new Generation of CGF able to

simulate “Intelligent” behavior, filling up the gap

between user requirements and current available

CGF performances

• To Demonstrate Dynamic VV&A and Asses

Execution of FEDEP Phases in a HLA Federation

acting at different levels of resolution

• To experiment use of PIOVRA with externalmodels in order to improve local accuracy within

large scenario exercises used in JTLS

PIOVRA

PIOVRA Partners

• MISS DIPTEM, Genoa University– Leader & Coordinator

• DIP Consortium • LSIS, Marseille

• ITESOFT• BRB• Liophant Simulation

• CIMSO - COI• DGA

The use of Excellence Centers with long tradition in research applied to industrial projects and mutual cooperation is a critical issue for guarantee the success of PIOVRA initiative:

IEPAL

PIOVRA

PIOVRA CGF Application AreasIntelligent Agents for CGF are useful in:

• Exercise functional area:– PIOVRA CGF constitute the ideal “sparring partner” due to the constancy of their

reactions and their possibility to reproduce realistic opponent actions and reactions.

• Defence Planning area:– PIOVRA CGF consents to verify operational plans in less time due to the absence,

complete or partial, of human experts employed in the different roles foreseen by the Operational Plan under exam; also in this case the objectivity, the reaction constancy, the CGF decision motivation traceability represent significant advantages.

• Support to Operations area:– PIOVRA CGF are an essential element in performing realistic verification and

ongoing real tactical situations possible progress evaluation by inserting them in the subject operation’s simulation. Due to elevated degree of realism and extremely rapid simulation feedback these use become realisable only through the use of intelligent CGF.

PIOVRA

PIOVRA Project Key Elements

• To develop a new generation of Computer Generated Forces (CGF) PIOVRA, to be used both for exercise scope, both for defence planning and support operations in an HLA Federation.

• The development of operative Prototypes to be Run in a Federation for completing the Dynamic VV&A and Execution Phase of new generation intelligent CGF.

• PIOVRA CGF are in some extent “Intelligent”, meaning that they demonstrates co-operative and competitive behaviours based on the current boundary conditions and situation.

• PIOVRA CGF includes Human Behaviour Modelling and Psychological Modifiers

6

PIOVRA

Integration & HLA in PIOVRA

• The interoperability of the PIOVRA components is strictly based on HLA in order to maximise their integration capabilities and improve the efficiency of their hierarchical structure.

• The Development of PIOVRA Units as HLA federates support the accreditation and testing of their performances

• PIOVRA CGF communicating/ cooperating/ competing through HLA allows to guarantee potential extensive use of PIOVRA units on complex scenario just by adding federates.

7

PIOVRA

PIOVRA Scenario Requirements

• Stabilization of an urban area where different ethnic populations, police forces, political movement agitators, terrorists and gangs act close to the military forces trying to maintain international peace and security

• Agitation and incitation for violence are directly linked with the presence and missions of the military forces on the ground and internal agent motivations in reaction to incidents

• Possible demonstrations, riots, lootings, kidnappings, murders and attack against military forces could occur

Demonstrate that PIOVRA supports the elaboration of well balance

military forces size and ROE for peace keeping operations as a 2nd

objective

PIOVRA

Integration Experience

• PIOVRA represent an Important experience in integration CGF in an complex HLA Federation

• PIOVRA is in fact the first opportunity for Italian and France MoDto integrate JTLS in an HLA Federation for CAX purposes

10

PIOVRA

Results• Positive first experience contracting University labs for an

armed forces project– Reactivity, flexibility, good understanding and willing– Address a topic that does not require a military background

• Sponsorship of European Defense Agency was mandatory for success

• Lessons learned– Technical (mainly regarding HLA federation)– Operational (fine tuning of parameters)

• Perspectives– Use inside Simulation centres during CAXs– Use inside HQs for planning and support OPS preparation

11

PIOVRA

Conclusions• PIOVRA represents one of the most advanced R&D Projects in

Modeling and Simulation in EDA

• PIOVRA represent an Important experience in advanced Human Behavior Modeling within an Interoperable Framework.

• Integration capabilities demonstrated by PIOVRA are representing state of art combining different multilevel simulations

12

PIOVRA

Key AchievementsKey Achievements• Overpassing existing gaps in available Computer

Generated Forces (CGF)

• Development of new Generation PIOVRA CGF based on Agents with “Intelligent Capabilities”

• Development of a PIOVRA Demonstrator in order to present the results obtained by execution of PIOVRA Scenario and presentation of Methodologies and Techniques used for its VV&A (Verification,Validation & Accreditation)

• Integration of PIOVRA Demonstrator with JTLS Wargaming System for presenting the potential of using Intelligent Agents in CAX, or in Operational Planning and Operation Support

• Modellng of Civil Disorders and Crowd Behavior (i.e.demonstrations, riots) considering Agitators, Terrorists and Military/Paramilitary units (i.e. Militia, Lord of War).

13

PIOVRA

Summarizing• The Creation of New CGFs introducing innovative

characteristics in Simulation Scenarios enables new application paradigms

• Intelligent Agents driving CGFs provide a Competitive Advantage for using Simulation in Exercise/Planning & Operation Support respect existing tools and packages

• Innovative Projects, such as PIOVRA, are necessary for validating and verifying the effectiveness of different methodologies in creating an integrated solution in a complex interoperable simulation.
