Policy for
Health and Wellbeing
At St Mary’s we are committed to providing an education for our young people, which is inclusive, stimulating and inspiring. Our aspiration for our pupils is that they should become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. We will provide this in a secure, happy and welcoming environment where Christian and Catholic values are cherished and where pupils, staff and parents work in partnership to achieve these goals.

Our Vision Statement
In St Mary’s we will endeavour to provide an education of the highest quality in a
well-ordered and structured environment.
“Learning through health and wellbeing promotes confidence, independent thinking and positive attitudes and dispositions. Because of this, it is the responsibility of every teacher to contribute to learning and development in this area.”

Learning through health and wellbeing enables pupils to:
make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing
experience challenge and enjoyment experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a
healthy make a successful move to the next stage of education or work establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into
adult life, and which will help to promote the health and wellbeing of the next generation of Scottish children. (Curriculum for Excellence)
Aims We aim to provide a Health and Wellbeing curriculum which ensures that children become:
successful learners ● confident individuals responsible citizens ● effective contributors
All staff have a responsibility to:
ensure pupils feel happy, safe, respected and included be proactive in promoting positive behaviour ensure safety and wellbeing of pupils and other members of the school
community by following good practice, in line with school policies contribute to the maintenance and development of a positive school ethos provide positive role modelling for pupils in relation to a healthy lifestyle
Everyone within our learning community, whatever their contact with children and young people may be, shares a responsibility for creating and maintaining a positive ethos in which pupils are:
Nurtured Active Respected Responsible Included Safe Healthy Achieving (GIRFEC)
Our Health and Wellbeing education is planned in line with Curriculum for Excellence Health and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes. All pupils have a right to be given opportunities to:
develop their self-awareness, self-worth and respect for others meet challenges, manage change and build relationships experience personal achievement and build resilience and confidence understand and develop their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing
and social skills understand how what they eat, how active they are and how decisions
they make about behaviour and relationships affect their physical and mental wellbeing
participate in a wide range of activities which promote a healthy lifestyle
understand that adults in their school community have a responsibility to look after them, listen to their concerns and involve others where necessary
learn about where to find help and resources to inform choices assess and manage risk and understand the impact of risk-taking
behaviour reflect on their strengths and skills to help them make informed
choices when planning their next steps acknowledge diversity and understand that it is everyone’s

School Ethos The school strives to create a positive ethos in which:
there is a strong sense of community the faith is nurtured in our catholic pupils and cultural, ethnic and
religious diversity of all is celebrated. The Christian faith and values inspire a welcoming, safe and caring
environment. self-esteem and self-worth of all members of the school community is
promoted there is an effective system of praise and rewards pupils find their work enjoyable, relevant and stimulating and are
motivated by the opportunities to be involved in the wider life of the school
appropriate pastoral care systems are in place to support pupils and staff the physical environment is valued and actively enhanced to promote
health and wellbeing there are effective systems for communication, collaboration,
consultation and involvement environmental and global issues are intrinsic to the life of the school
Planning All staff have a responsibility to develop, reinforce and extend learning in Health and Wellbeing. Staff plan learning activities based on the Health and Wellbeing experiences and outcomes from Curriculum for Excellence. These are structured under the following six headings:
Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing Planning for Choices and Changes Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport Food and Health Substance Misuse Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood
Health and Wellbeing Education will be delivered through:
Focused programmes Interdisciplinary learning Planned and incidental opportunities within the life of the school
The overarching aspects of Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing and Planning for Choices and Changes are embedded in the life and work of the School.
Leadership We recognise that our school leadership has a responsibility to:
establish a shared vision of health and wellbeing for all to promote the health and wellbeing of everyone within the school
community and to develop arrangements to support their health and wellbeing
Learning and Teaching Teachers are expected to identify appropriate learning and teaching styles to suit the needs of their pupils while recognising the importance of active learning and the capacities and principles of Curriculum for Excellence. (See Learning and Teaching Policy).
Partnership Working The school has a commitment to partnership working and seeks opportunities to
involve pupils in planning and decision-making engage the active support of parents and carers reinforce work across transitions and within the cluster maximise the contributions of the wider community draw upon specialist expertise
Assessment, Recording and Reporting Learning in Health and Wellbeing will be assessed in line with the principles of the School’s Policy on Assessment, Recording and Reporting. (Please see policy for further details).
