PEGASUS BRINGS EXCITEMENT, GROWING PAINSBy Lenny Shulman

Just a fortnight before the inaugural $12 million Pe-gasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1), the richest

Thoroughbred race ever to be run in North America, even its participants don't know quite what to make of the event. The Pegasus, like its giant namesake statue that stands at his Gulfstream Park, is the brainchild of racetrack magnate Frank Stronach, and has been put together in a blazingly short amount of time, particularly given the staid pace of change in the Thoroughbred world.

The Pegasus has succeeded already on a couple key fronts. It has the Thoroughbred world buzzing about a race occurring during what is normally downtime on the racing calendar. Through a series of fortuitous circumstances, it also appears ready to host the rematch that fans and the racing world want to see

between the soon-to-be retired champion California Chrome and his conqueror in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), Arrogate.

Stronach has persuaded a dozen owners to fund the purse of the Pegasus by putting up $1 million each for a slot in the starting gate plus a cut of handle and sponsorship dollars. The slots not only sold out, but did so almost immediately last May to horsemen and even outsiders dazzled by the $7 million winner's share of the race. Predictably, in a sport where eight months is an eternity, several stakeholders have been left empty-handed and desperate to fill their gate positions because of injuries to their anointed starters that were sound at the beginning of the process.

The Pegasus shows signs of both an innovator's genius and the growing pains associated with a fast-growing endeavor of this magnitude. There is no doubt an increasing appetite for big event days in this sport,

and the Pegasus, with six other stakes events on its card, has the potential to claim its spot on the racing calendar. Already there is talk of adding a turf race to the program in the future in the hopes of increasing international participation. There have at least been conversations about a venue change, perhaps as soon as next year, to Santa Anita Park, with its ability to handle far larger crowds than its Florida stablemate.

Yet, if the Pegasus is to endure, The Stronach Group must be willing to perform several tweaks to the original formula when looking toward future editions, particularly concerning the time frame in which owners must commit (closer to the race being preferable) and the purse distribution formula.

As the Pegasus is presently constituted, owners of the horses that finish fourth through 12th will receive $250,000 in purse earnings, meaning nine of the 12 stakeholders are going to lose a considerable amount of money. That is not likely to be sustainable going forward.

It cost owners approximately $50,000 last year to enter their charges in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), which offered a purse of just less than $2.4 million. The Preakness and Belmont Stakes (both G1) returned $1.5 million in purses in 2016 for entry fees of approximately $30,000. Clearly, Stronach set up the Pegasus to outdo the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) in total purse money ($12 million to $10 million) and greater winner's share ($7 million to $6 million). The second-place finisher in the Pegasus will receive $1.75 million in purse money, and third

place is good for $1 million. In addition, slot holders will receive 1/12th of the net revenue the race generates in wagering, media rights, and sponsorships. Although NBC will televise the Pegasus, The Stronach Group is paying for that air time, so no money will flow to the slot holders from TV. Slot holders also retain first preference for entering the 2018 edition of the Pegasus.

Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Farm, which co-owns California Chrome and will stand him at stud after the Pegasus, noted it is important for horsemen to invest in the race in an attempt to build it into a major event down the road that could help them keep their stars active.

"It's important to me that a day like this succeeds," Taylor said. "California Chrome would not have been running in 2016 if not for Sheikh Mohammed and the Dubai World Cup. Without that race we would have looked at the economics and would have had to wait for the Breeders' Cup, and the right thing to do would have been to retire California Chrome because you don't know if he'd have stayed sound for that long. He would have gone to the shed, and at a much lower fee. But we looked at the economics and saw we could win $6 million in Dubai, so that kept us in training.

"So if the Pegasus continues, people are going to look at keeping their stars in the game. They're going to say, 'If I can win this race and that race...' and it will make more sense than breeding to 100 mares if you're not commanding a huge stud fee. So the economics can be there, and it's a hell of a lot more fun to race one than it is to breed one."

PEGASUS UNDERCARD ATTRACTS CLASSBy BloodHorse Staff

Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Hoppertunity leads a group of graded stakes winners among

111 horses nominated to the five supporting stakes races, three of them graded, on the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) program Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.

A total of $1,025,000 in purses will be available in the stakes leading up to the first running of the Pegasus, with its world-record purse of $12 million.

The Bob Baffert-trained Hoppertunity leads 30 horses by earnings nominated for the inaugural running of the $400,000 Poseidon Stakes at nine furlongs on dirt. Hoppertunity prevailed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup by a half-length over Effinex to pick up his second grade 1 victory. He earned $2.3 million in 2016 to push his career total to $3.9 million.

Baffert, who is preparing Arrogate for the Pegasus, also nominated grade 1 winner Mor Spirit for the Poseidon.

Stanford, winner of the Dec. 17 Harlan's Holiday Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream, was one of nine horses nominated by leading trainer Todd Pletcher for the Poseidon. Cherry Wine, second in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and a winner of his only start at Gulfstream, is also nominated.

Defending champion Charming Kitten is one of the five nominated by trainer Mike Maker for the 50th running of the $200,000 W.L. McKnight at 1 1/12 miles on the turf, which has 21 nominees. Charming Kitten followed up his McKnight win with a victory in the H. Allen Jerkens. Maker also nominated three-time stakes winner Oscar Nominated and 2016 Red Smith victor Bigger Picture.

Gelfenstein Farm’s Dearest is among the 18 fillies and mares nominated to the $100,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3) at seven furlongs on the main track. Dearest won the Dec. 17 Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) in her most recent start. Sugar Swirl runner-up You Bought Her, trained by David Hinsley, is also nominated, as was Rampart Stakes (G3) winner Eskenformoney.

The 48th running of the La Prevoyante Handicap

(G3T) for fillies and mares going 1 1/2 miles on the grass has 21 nominations. Trainer Chad Brown nominated Martin Schwartz’ German-bred Olorda, winner of both her starts in 2016—Gulfstream's The Very One (G3T) and the Bewitched (G3T) at Keeneland. Juddmonte Farms’ stakes veteran Suffused, also nominated, was the winner of the Glens Falls (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course and was beaten a nose in the E.P. Taylor (G1T) at Woodbine.

Mongolian Saturday, the 2015 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner is among the 21 nominated for the $125,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint. Also nominated to the five-furlong event are the top three finishers in the $100,000 Turf Dash at Tampa Bay Downs—Power Alert, Incensed, and Flying Rumor. BH

David Fiske was packing his car Jan. 19 in preparation for the drive to Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Among the many things the Winchell Thoroughbreds manager hopes to see during his time in New Orleans is a definitive sign that their 3-year-old filly Untapped is starting to make some headway on sparking some similarities between herself and her big sister.

While they already share bloodlines, connections, and near identical monikers, Fiske said Untapped is still a far different animal than her full sister, Untapable, the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner and champion 3-year-old filly of 2014. Should Untapped boast half the talent of her sibling, she should be in good stead when she makes her stakes debut Jan. 21 in the Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds.

training, the chestnut daughter of Tapit didn't exactly signal that she was ready to fill her sister's massive shoes. Since Untapped broke her maiden by 6 1/4 lengths at Keeneland Oct. 26, her connections have happily had to reevaluate what they thought they had on their hands.

"In her case, she wasn't all that well regarded earlier last year," Fiske said. "And it's not as if all of the foals out of that mare (2014 Broodmare of the Year Fun House) have been unqualified successes. So by mid-summer we were thinking, maybe if (Untapped) can break her maiden, maybe we'll breed her or something. All of the sudden, by late summer into the fall (trainer) Steve (Asmussen) said 'Wow, she's really getting good.'"

Untapped doubled down on her maiden triumph by taking an allowance race at Fair Grounds Dec. 23 by 3 1/4 lengths to improve her mark to two wins from three starts. As she readies for her jump into deeper waters this weekend, her sister is also being prepped for her next big career move.

Untapable was shipped to England this winter, where she is slated to be bred to unbeaten champion Frankel both in 2017 and next season. Fiske says the 6-year-old bay mare has adapted very well to her temporary life overseas and that, should all go as expected, she will return stateside in the summer of 2018.

"They tell me she is getting around Newmarket just fine," Fiske said. "She likes her little buddies over there, she gets turned out with a group of maiden mares, and she's been under lights and gotten all her (contagious equine metritis) cultures done. If everything goes right, she'll get bred this year and conceive, and then foal next year and then conceive. And then in summer of 2018, at some point, she'll come home with her Frankel foal." BH

MOORE HIRED TO DIRECT DEL MAR'S TRACK MAINTENANCEBy BloodHorse Staff

Veteran trackman Dennis Moore, the track superin-tendent at Santa Anita Park, has accepted the addi-

tional role of director of track maintenance at Del Mar, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced Jan. 19.

Moore, 67, with more than 44 years of experience working racetracks around the world, will continue his full-time role at Santa Anita while also assuming his new responsibilities at Del Mar for its summer and fall meetings.

"Having consistency is a key element in safety and that can mean surface and personnel," said Del Mar president and general manager Joe Harper. "With Dennis Moore on board at Southern California's two major tracks—both featuring the same racing surfaces—we've moved solidly in that direction. We owe Keith Brackpool and his people at Santa Anita a big thank you for their willingness to share Dennis with us, which will go a long way toward enhancing Southern California's racing and training environment.

"We're doing everything in our power to ensure the finest, safest, and most horse-friendly racing surface we possibly can offer at Del Mar. Dennis knows his business, and our horsemen know Dennis and respect the work he does."

Moore has extensive experience, both maintaining and building racetracks in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. Most recently he directed the expansion of Los Alamitos Race Course from five furlongs to a mile and led the installation of the new dirt track—using "El Segundo sand"—at Santa Anita in 2014. Del Mar installed the same sand on its main track in 2015.

"Dennis is not only one of the most savvy trackmen in the country, he's got an almost instinctive feel for how the 'El Segundo sand' sets up and plays, which will be a natural plus for his work here at Del Mar," said Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins. "He's a pro's pro and a very bright man who is always learning and open to new ideas. He takes input from all sources and uses it to good advantage."

Moore is replacing Del Mar's previous track superintendent, Steven Wood Jr., a role the latter assumed in 2016. Wood will be the senior crew member working for Moore at the seaside oval.

Moore, who was born in Lynwood, Calif., comes from a racetrack family with expansive experience with track surfaces. His father Bob and his brother Ron were both track superintendents. His son Rob currently works on the track maintenance crew at Los Alamitos. Moore first began his career at Los Alamitos in 1972 and subsequently has worked, built, and/or consulted at dozens of racetracks around the globe, including all the Southern California surfaces, among them the now-closed pair of Hollywood Park and Fairplex Park. Besides his Santa Anita work, he additionally serves as a consultant at Los Alamitos and the training centers at San Luis Rey Downs and Galway Downs.

Moore was the track superintendent at Remington Park in 1988, when they installed a revolutionary surface called Equitrack, among the nation's original synthetic racing surfaces. He used the experience gained to guide the installation and enhancement of Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in 2006, which was one of the more successful synthetic surfaces put in place in Southern California during their state-mandated run between 2006 and 2014.

With Del Mar hosting its first Breeders' Cup Nov. 3-4 this year, track officials now know the racing surface will be under the guidance of a man with a trio of Breeders' Cups already under his belt—the 1997 event at Hollywood Park and the 2014 and 2016 editions at Santa Anita.

Moore has also worked closely over the years with Dr. Mick Peterson, the executive director of the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory, which is considered the preeminent racetrack testing and review provider in the nation. Peterson is currently Del Mar's track surfaces consultant. BH

SPENDTHRIFT, CHURCHILL ADD JUVENILE FILLY STAKESBy BloodHorse Staff

Fresh off a successful inaugural running of the Spendthrift Juvenile Stallion Stakes, Spendthrift

Farm and Churchill Downs announced the event will be run as two divisional races starting in 2017: one for 2-year-old males and one for 2-year-old fillies.

"The Spendthrift Juvenile Stallion Stakes was an overwhelming success last year, and we're delighted to once again collaborate with Churchill Downs to build on that success," said Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey. "The addition of a fillies division is something many of our breeders asked for, and this year we are happy to be able to provide it. It's another way for us to help our breeders and the industry as a whole."

Spendthrift will fund an additional $100,000 annually to their original $300,000 commitment. The $400,000 will be allocated to the pair of $200,000 stakes, both seven furlongs on dirt, on the opening-day card of Churchill's fall meet, which in 2017 is slated for Oct. 29. The fillies race will be named the Spendthrift Juvenile Filly Stallion Stakes.

CATHRYN SOPHIA TAKES TOP MIDLANTIC-BRED HONORSBy BloodHorse Staff

Maryland-bred Cathryn Sophia has earned the Mid-Atlanic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top

Midlantic-bred title for 2016.Stellar Wind's bid to repeat as the top horse bred in the

mid-Atlantic region fell just short of Cathryn Sophia, who finished ahead of the 2015 winner and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner Finest City to earn the honors.

The Mid-Atlanic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top Midlantic-bred poll is comprised of some two dozen media members and other participants in Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred racing.

The top three horses represent three different states and account for seven combined graded stakes victories in 2016, four at the grade 1 level.

"What a great year for horses bred in the Mid-Atlantic region," said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, which publishes Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. "The depth of the field this year far surpassed previous years, which made this an especially tough decision for the voters."

The second- and third-place finishers both had strong enough seasons to make solid cases for top honors. Stellar Wind, a Virginia-bred, won two of four starts in 2016, taking a pair of grade 1 wins—the Clement L. Hirsch and the Zenyatta Stakes—over Beholder. She finished fourth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) after breaking poorly.

Finest City, bred in Pennsylvania, won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint to cap off a season in which she also won the Great Lady M. Stakes (G2) and earned $823,200.

But it was Cathryn Sophia who topped them all. She earned top honors after a year in which she won four of seven starts and finished in the money in all of them. She won three graded races and earned more than $1.1 million during the season.

Cathryn Sophia's seasonal highlight came in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). Under Javier Castellano, the daughter of Street Boss cruised outside the leaders and went on to a 2 3/4-length victory.

"It's exciting," said breeder Bob Manfuso. "She's a Maryland-bred and winning the Kentucky Oaks is an incredible thing."

She also won a pair of grade 2 events at Gulfstream Park, where she took the Forward Gal Stakes in late January and Davona Dale Stakes in February.

Cathryn Sophia's other highlights include a trio of third-place finishes in grade 1 company: the Central Bank Ashland Stakes at Keeneland, the Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park, and in her season finale, the Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing.

"Cathryn Sophia stamped herself virtually from her first race as a special talent," said Frank Vespe, owner and publisher of The Racing Biz. "This honor marks a terrific season in which she faced—and usually defeated—the best fillies of her generation."

Bred in Maryland by Robert Manfuso, Cathryn Sophia is out of the unraced Mineshaft mare Sheave. Manfuso sold her in 2014 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall yearling sale in Timonium, where she fetched a winning bid of $30,000 from Charles Zacney, who named the then-unnamed filly after his niece, Cathryn McCarry.

Zacney, under the name Cash Is King, sent Cathryn Sophia to trainer John Servis at his Parx Racing base. She won at first asking there and followed that with a 16-length romp in the Gin Talking Stakes at Laurel Park, the final race of her 2015 season.

"She was a true campaigner," Servis said. "She was a racehorse."

Zacney sold Cathryn Sophia, who completed her career with six wins from nine starts and earnings of more than $1.2 million, at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton's November Sale. She fetched a winning bid of $1.4 million from SF Bloodstock and will be bred to Pioneerof the Nile. BH

as a graded stakes winner, has yet to race in restricted company, but that will change Jan. 21 when he heads a field of eight in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park.

The 15th running of the Classic is one of five stakes for horses bred in the Sunshine State on the 12-race card.

A homebred for Live Oak Plantation, Awesome Slew enters the 1 1/8-mile Classic off a third-place finish behind Stanford and Keen Ice in the Dec. 17 Harlan's Holiday Stakes (G3). Though trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. considered running the 4-year-old son of Awesome Again in the in the $400,000 Poseidon Handicap, one of the supporting stakes on the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) card Jan. 28, the look of the Classic ultimately proved to be more attractive.

"I think it's a good spot for him, because it is restricted to Florida-breds," Plesa said. "Live Oak does breed horses that are Florida-breds and it's an opportunity for us to run in a race that certainly isn't going to be anywhere near a Pegasus-type race."

Awesome Slew has consistently flashed speed early in his eight starts and was able to wire the field when he captured the Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) by seven lengths

at Parx Racing Sept. 5. After some bumpy moments during the bay colt's 3-year-old season, including a fifth-place effort in the Pennsylvania Derby (G2), Plesa said he's looking forward to Awesome Slew's 2017 campaign.

"He's just stepping up to the plate," Plesa said. "He's been compromised by odd things that happen to horses—sickness being his main thing—and we were trying to play catch-up all last year. We finally caught up in the Smarty Jones and then I ran him back a little quicker than he probably would have liked in the Pennsylvania Derby. He's been training great and he's doing great. I think he'll hit his full stride this year."

Piloting, who carries the colors of Westbury Stables, will represent trainer Mark Casse and is in search of his first stakes victory in his 27th start. The 6-year-old Tapit gelding

set a pressured pace in the Nov. 12 Millions Classic Preview Stakes before yielding late to the odds-on Mr. Jordan.

Casse said Piloting's early speed is likely to be on display in the Classic.

"You maybe could (take him back), but I don't think he would be as effective," Casse said. "He likes to be up close and running, and I don't think we will take that away from him."

Before the Classic takes center stage Saturday, a field of six fillies and mares will vie for state-bred bragging rights in the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff Stakes going six furlongs. David Fawkes-trainee Moment of Delight has raced exclusively in Florida in her 18 starts and most recently prevailed in the Millions Distaff Preview Stakes at Gulfstream Park West Nov. 12. BH

REPORTING STAR AGAIN IN SUNSHINE MILLIONS TURFBy BloodHorse Staff

Merriebelle Stable's Reporting Star, runner-up in each of the

past two years, will try to secure the elusive top spot with a scheduled start in the Jan. 21 Sunshine Millions Turf at Gulfstream Park.

The race is one of five stakes for Florida-breds on Gulfstream's Sunshine Millions card Saturday.

Reporting Star, a gelded 7-year-old son of Circular Quay, paid immediate dividends when he captured the one-mile Appleton Stakes (G3T) last April at Gulfstream. It was his first start for trainer Brendan Walsh since being purchased privately following a half-length loss to Manchurian High in the Sunshine Millions Turf.

Walsh put Reporting Star in four straight graded events where he finished no better than sixth in both the Red Bank (G3T) and Bernard Baruch (G2T) stakes, ultimately capping his campaign running fourth by 1 1/2 lengths in the 7 1/2-furlong El Prado Stakes Dec. 17 at Gulfstream, a race he won in 2015 for previous trainer Pat Parente.

"He came out of the last race good and he's been doing well, so hopefully we can rekindle his old form and if he can, he should be very live in there," Walsh said. "He was coming off a bit of a layoff (in the El Prado) but it was a good comeback and we thought he ran well.

"He wasn't beaten far and he looked like he was back to his old self," he added. "He kind of lost his

way after the Appleton last year but he seems like, having had a break now, he seems like he's back to his old self again. We're looking forward to it."

In two other $100,000 Sunshine Millions stakes for Florida-breds Saturday:

• One year after winning the Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes with X Y Jet, trainer Jorge Navarro will try to win the race a second straight year when he sends out Monster Racing Stables' Delta Bluesman in the six-furlong sprint.

A 7-year-old Wagon Limit gelding, Delta Bluesman is expected to face six other sprinters Saturday after opening the year with a third-place finish in the

Jan. 1 Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. Last year Delta Bluesman captured the Smile Sprint Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream.

• After finishing second in last year's Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes, Miller Racing's E B Ryder is back to try to earn a trip to the winner's circle following the 1 1/16-mile turf race. Trained by Marty Wolfson, the daughter of Bluegrass Cat didn't earn a victory in eight starts last year but did place in three stakes.

Last year Wolfson and Miller Racing secured the top two places in the Filly and Mare Turf as Lori's Store won the race over her stablemate. BH

HBPA CONVENTION SCHEDULED FOR LAS VEGASBy BloodHorse Staff

Racetracks developing strong relations with their horsemen is good for business. So is the sport's

stakeholders investing in Thoroughbred retirement. Those are two panel discussions planned for the

National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association convention scheduled for March 7-10 at Las Vegas' South Point Hotel, Casino, and Spa. The HBPA is the world's largest organization representing Thoroughbred owners and trainers, with close to 30,000 members across the United States and Canada.

The convention kicks off with a reception the evening of March 7, with full programs planned March 8-10 open to all attendees. In addition, the complete HBPA board will meet March 11. It is the only convention the HBPA will stage in 2017 after having two in prior years.

Registration is now open at hbpa.org/convention for the event, at which elected officers and board members of the 28 state and five Canadian affiliates will discuss the issues and challenges facing the sport through committee meetings, panels, and presentations. The assembly is open to anyone involved in the racing industry, including handicappers and fans. Sponsored by Xpressbet and the National HBPA, the convention for the first time includes a handicapping tournament that serves as a qualifier to the 2018 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship.

Corey Johnsen, president and part-owner of Kentucky Downs, as well as an owner and breeder, will deliver the keynote speech March 8. He also is part of a panel titled Horsemen's Relations: Building Positive Momentum Working Together, a session that includes The Stronach Group's Mike Rogers and Canterbury Park's Randy Sampson, with Virginia HBPA executive director Frank Petramalo moderating.

Johnsen, Ray Reid, and their partners in Kentucky Downs began operating Historical Horse Racing terminals in 2011 and have used that innovative pari-mutuel technology as a game-changing force. In the past five years, the track's purses have mushroomed from $746,810 to $7.8 million in 2016. Kentucky Downs also is using its economic firepower to benefit the entire state circuit, including working with the Kentucky HBPA to transfer $1.35 million in purses to Ellis Park for its 2016 meet.

"One thing that I have tried to bring to the National HBPA's platform is the importance and proclamation of being positive in our industry," said Eric Hamelback, the National HBPA's chief executive officer. "Corey Johnsen clearly fits that bill."

Kentucky HBPA president Rick Hiles, New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association president Rick Violette, and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance's Stacie Clark will share their experiences and thoughts in the session TAA: Protecting Your Investment in Retirement.

Other topics and presentations include what the growth of advance-deposit wagering platforms means for the sport; medication updates, including hair and out-of-competition testing; equine nutrition and veterinary topics; exchange wagering; equine research and legal updates; and member benefits. Ed Martin and Judy Wagner, the CEO and chairwoman of the board for the Association of Racing Commissioners International, will summarize the racing regulators' town hall meetings and results of its survey of racing participants.

"Our convention provides an excellent opportunity for individuals and affiliates to network, discuss concerns and solutions, and hear a variety of topics affecting our national horsemen," said Leroy Gessmann, the National HBPA president. "The (National) HBPA is committed to helping shape the future of the Thoroughbred racing industry and representing the interests of its owners and trainers." BH

FINNEGANS WAKE TO STAND IN CALIFORNIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade I turf winner Finnegans Wake has been re-tired to stud at Ballena Vista Farm near Ramona,

Calif., where he will stand as the property of Rocking-ham Ranch for $3,500.

The 8-year-old son of Powerscourt—Boat's Ghost, by Silver Ghost, was campaigned by Donegal Racing and Rockingham Ranch. Bred in Kentucky by Donegal's president and managing partner Jerry Crawford, Finnegans Wake raced from 2 to 7 and scored victories in four graded stakes.

His biggest win came in the 2015 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1T), and he started that season with consecutive wins in the San Gabriel Stakes and San Marcos Stakes (both G2T). Throughout his career, Finnegans Wake won or placed in 12 graded stakes and retired with $1,594,665 in earnings.

Powerscourt is a multiple grade/group 1-winning son of Sadler's Wells and Ireland's highweight colt of 2003. To date he's sired 18 black-type stakes winners and three champions. Finnegans Wake is his chief earner.

MOVING DOWN JAPAN'S ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBYBy Naohiro Goda

Connections of two Japanese-trained 3-year-olds have expressed serious interest in sending their

colts to the United States for the Kentucky Derby Pre-sented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Mont Saint Legame, owned by Shinichi Yamashita and trained by Koji Maki, is undefeated in two starts, including the Nov. 26 Cattleya Sho at Tokyo, one of two qualifying races in the "Japan Road to Kentucky Derby" challenge that awards 40-16-8-4 respective points to the top four finishers.

The colt is by Came Home, a winner of three grade 1 races, including the 2002 Pacific Classic, who has been standing in Japan since 2008.

Foggy Night, by Tapit, is out of Champagne d'Oro, the winner of the 2010 Acorn Stakes and Test Stakes (both G1) and a $2.7 million purchase by Shadai Farm from the Bluewater Sales consginment at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall mixed sale.

Bred by Shadai Farm, Foggy Night was bought by Makoto Kaneko at the yearling session of the 2015 JRHA select sale for ¥230,000,000 (US$1.85 million), the second highest price at the session.

Champion trainer Noriyuki Hori, who conditioned recently retired, six-time grade 1 winner Maurice, trains the colt who has a maiden win at Tokyo.

Both are scheduled to start in the Feb. 19 Hyacinth Stakes, a one-mile dirt race at Tokyo and the other "Japan Road to Kentucky Derby" challenge race, which awards 50-20-10-5 qualifying points. BH

MEXIKOMA TO KEEN FARMS IN TEXASBy BloodHorse Staff

Mexikoma, a stakes-winning son of Birdstone, has been retired to stud and will stand his first season at

Dallas and Donna Keen's Keen Farms in Burleson, Texas. He will stand for a $1,000 fee as property of the Keens.

Campagined by Team Valor International, Mexikoma hit the board in eight of 12 starts, with four victories and earnings of $339,054. His biggest victory came in the 2016 Sunshine Millions Classic for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park. He followed up that effort with a third-place run in the Donn Handicap (G1) last February behind Mshawish and Valid.

As a 2-year old he broke his maiden in his second start for then owner and trainer Michael Dilger by 14 3/4 lengths. In his next start for Team Valor, he finished sixth in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) behind winner New Year's Day.

Bred by Hickstead Farm in Florida, the 6-year-old stallion was the first foal out of the Toccet mare Toccet Over.

"We are very excited to be standing the only son

of Birdstone in Texas, and we think his combination of pedigree and race record makes him an attractive option for breeders in this region," Donna Keen said. "We would like to thank Team Valor and agent Ashley Sooknanan for making this possible." BH

INTERVIEWPETE BRADLEY ON THE BLOODSTOCK MARKET

Lexington-based bloodstock agent Pete Brad-ley is involved in all aspects of the business,

and puts together successful pinhooking and racing partnerships. He had a 25% interest in De-lightful Joy, whose $700,000 purchase price was second-highest at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. In an interview with BloodHorse sales editor Ron Mitchell, Bradley discussed the overall state of the North American bloodstock market.

BloodHorse: How did a mare like Delightful Joy end up in the January sale rather than the higher-profile November sale?

Pete Bradley: She had been entered in the November sale, but we couldn't get her there because of a foot issue. When you have a Tapit filly who is a graded stakes winner, a half sister to a graded stakes winner, and out of graded stakes winner, those kinds of horses sell well anywhere. We figured she was a $600,000 filly no matter where she was. On top of the other positives, she was also a very pretty mare. When you put those four things together, that is what the market is looking for and will give you a premium.

BH: The January sale can vary with fluctuation in quality from year to year, but this year's sale was off considerably. Do you think that says something about the overall market?

PB: It's the same story: quality continues to sell well. There is an overproduction problem to some degree, but our biggest problem is there is an undersupply of owners. We are seeing contraction in ownership by the small owner that is somewhere between a hobbyist and a small commercial breeder. Those trying to be commercial in lower to moderately priced mares of $15,000-$75,000 find it a hard market in which to make money—almost impossible. You are seeing more outfits that have 25-50 mares and that is the economic unit you need to be a viable

participant in this market. They are the ones able to work through this market.

BH: Keeneland’s Geoffrey Russell said breeders should consider racing more of their horses, because not all horses are commercially viable. Do you agree?

PB: With the boom of the late 1970s and early 80s, that market changed from the owner/breeder to the breeder/seller. We are going to have to see a lot more contraction to get back the owner/breeder mentality and I just don’t think we are going to be able to do it. I think you will continue to see the Costco model, where commercial breeders have larger numbers and at the end of the day will have larger market share. I think you are going to see continued contraction and loss of people in the breeding business over the next five years.

BH: Will we continue to see market contraction in 2017?

PB: I think we have to have a contraction in the supply of horses. I think you are going to see a continued polarized market, where the "A" and "B-plus" quality are selling well to extremely well. The average horse that is an acceptable racing horse at some level is going to be hard to sell, whether as a yearling or a 2-year-old. BH
