A note from Pastor KarlaWhen the page of the calendar turns to March, I start to wear purple. I don't necessary love the color purple, but in the liturgical calendar (the rhythms of the Chrisan year), this color reminds us that we are in a period of repentance and reflecon. The season of Lent is a me of waing. We all know the difficules of waing, in parcular when we are waing for something wonderful to emerge. The expectaon of the wonderful is what we set our eyes on despite knowing it will likely be dark and painful to get there. The most difficult thing about birthing my son, more than labor pains if you can imagine, was fasng. When a woman enters the birthing process, hospitals don't allow them to consume food or drink just in case there becomes a need for emergency surgery. Because I had Gestaonal Diabetes in my last trimester of pregnancy, I was already desperately craving sweets and bread, so the thought that I might get to taste an almond croissant aſter fasng during labor was a wonderful image to focus on. This sounds awful in retrospect, that I was more excited about eang a French pastry than meeng my son, but, of course, I understood the delight of dessert more than the delight of being a mother at the me, so I focused on what I understood. Yet despite my very low expectaons, God gave me something far beer than a French pastry. A note from Pastor Karla… When the page of the calendar turns to March, I start to wear purple. I don't necessary love the color purple, but in the liturgical calendar (the rhythms of the Christian year), this color reminds us that we are in a period of repentance and reflection. The season of Lent is a time of waiting. We all know the difficulties of waiting, in particular when we are waiting for something wonderful to emerge. The expectation of the wonderful is what we

set our eyes on despite knowing it will likely be dark and painful to get there. The most difficult thing about birthing my son, more than labor pains if you can imagine, was fasting. When a woman enters the birthing process, hospitals don't allow them to consume food or drink just in case there becomes a need for emergency surgery. Because I had Gestational Diabetes in my last trimester of pregnancy, I was already desperately craving sweets and bread, so the thought that I might get to taste an almond croissant after fasting during labor was a wonderful image to focus on. This sounds awful in retrospect, that I was more excited about eating a French pastry than meeting my son, but, of course, I understood the delight of dessert more than the delight of being a mother at the time, so I focused on what I understood. actually wants to give us. And we do that by not allowing God into our lives, into our pain--which is why the season of Lent is so important in our journey of faith--as in it, we make room in our lives for God. N.T. Wright once wrote, “Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault-finding or finger-pointing but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he now has in store.” May this season of being cleaned, prepare us all for God's deeper work in our lives. Grateful for purple, Pastor Karla

Session Highlights February 27, 2018 Session Meeting

Elder Sam Przywitowski led a Mad Lib exercise to help describe how Session elders perceive the culture of our church at the February 27 meeting, and Elder Barbett Wood shared her journey of faith. Finance Chair C. Gresham Bayne reported that February was a very good month for pledge gathering, and that the 2019 Operating Budget is now on firm footing. The final 2018 budget report will be delayed while the accounting system is converted from a cash basis to an accrual basis. Bayne also reported on planned improvements to the Sanctuary and Chapel sound systems with the installation of telecoil technology allowing better transmission of microphone sounds to worshipers wearing hearing aids. Worship and Music Chair Rebecca Cress announced the change of her Session Committee name to Worship and Arts, demonstrating worship leaders’ intent that “all the arts, all our gifts should be used in our worship.” Youth Ministry Chair Elder Mike Long was pleased to report that he has recruited energetic church members to serve on his committee. He also reported that Youth Ministry Associate Michael Lombrano will begin volunteering with the high school group while Sarah Butterfield will add the Youth Associate role to her part-time MOPS Coordinator position. … and the Session concluded the meeting hearing a report on termites from Facilities Chair Elder Dave Simmons. Partner With The Youth Through Prayer

Rancho Genesis is in the process of building a new 9-acre camp property to be used for Summer 2019. The week of March 25-29, we are taking a group of 13 students ranging from 6 th through 12th grade, and 3 adult leaders down to Mexico to help in the construction process. We invite you to partner with us by praying for our team. We are seeking God’s unmistakable presence and protection as we travel, build, and learn all about what God is doing to renew and restore orphans in Mexico through the ministry of Genesis Diez.

Interfaith Shelter In San Diego County, nearly 9,000 of our neighbors are homeless (although experts agree that the actual number is far higher). This month, March 9-23 PLCPC is hosting up to 12 homeless guests (men, women and children) who are actively working with case managers at Presbyterian Urban Ministries to seek employment, long-term housing and other services. Through the Interfaith Shelter, a non-denominational rotational shelter, the participants receive shelter, food and support services at different churches in the community. We need a host of volunteers to assure that our

homeless brothers and sisters feel safe and well-cared for during their stay with us. Sign-up information is available at the SERVE table on the plaza on Sunday mornings and on our web site: pointlomachurch.org/register.
