CURRICULUM DAY - DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES With technology moving so rapidly and now being an essential part of the Victorian Cur-
riculum, staff spent Monday working with Celia Coffa from the ‘University of Adelaide’ —
School of Computer Science Digital Technologies Project, investigating how we best
support children in learning about technologies and integrate this into our teaching
everyday. Teachers had a chance to explore, investigate and play around with a few
gadgets and ideas that children will be involved in each classroom on a regular basis.
Thank you to all families for the support.
REPORTS AND 3-WAY CONFERENCE At this time of year staff will dedicate many hours to student reports in the lead up to the
reports being forwarded to families and the 3-Way Conference. Student Reports will be
sent home on Monday 25th June. A formal opportunity for parents to discuss the progress
of their child/children will occur on
Wednesday 27th June. Allocation of 3-way conference times will be forwarded
sometime in coming weeks.
MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and
well informed and productive community members who are well prepared to become

FOUNDATION (PREP) ENROLMENTS 2019 Thank you to those parents who have let us know their child will be starting Prep next
year. We encourage families to contact the school if they have a child starting school next
year. As we move into the month of June we start to really focus on staffing, grade
structures and the allocation of resources for next year.
Having a reasonable idea of our Prep numbers at this stage of the year helps immensely.
Please pass this message onto any parents outside of our school community who are
intending to enrol their children here next year.
Enrolment Packs can be collected from the school office. The pack includes information
pertinent to CGPS including the Head Start Transition Program and includes the official
school enrolment form. The enrolment form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate and
immunisation record should be returned to school by Friday June 29th, 2017.
This date is set by the Department of Education. If your child has additional needs
including a medical diagnosis, language difficulties, is involved with any Early
Intervention services, or if you just have a worry or concern about your child, please make
an appointment to see me as soon as possible.
REMINDER - ‘ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS’ A reminder that the new requirement for schools under Department of
Education Guidelines is for the school to contact parents/guardians as soon as
practicable on the day of a student’s absence. This was formerly three days. Please
support these changes by having prompt communication on the morning of the absence, if
we have not received a call or you have not completed an online absent form the class
teacher, Kerryn (Wellbeing Officer), Nicole or myself need to communicate with you.
To eliminate the need to contact you on the day of the absence you can take one
of the following actions:
Let us know in advance if you know your child is going to be away. You can call the
office or let your child’s classroom teacher know.
Use the Skoolbag App ‘Absent Note’ link and forward to the school ASAP OR you
can go to the school webpage and use the ‘Report an Absent’ link found on the front
page.
Call the school first thing in the morning to let us know your child is away and the
reason.
COLD AND FLU HYGIENE It is that time of year when colds and flu tend to be common around our community. Good
health hygiene practices can greatly reduce the chance you will get the flu or pass it on to
others.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs can be spread that
way.
Please discuss the above points with your children.

Our Awesome Excursion
By 1/2B On Wednesday the 23rd of May 2018, Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students and teachers went on an excursion to Echuca because we are learning about transport this term. At 9.00am we marked the roll and everyone hopped on the bus for our ride to Echuca. We stopped in Rochester for a quick toilet break. When we arrived in Echuca we ate our playlunch. Next we went on the paddle-steamer for one hour. It was spectacular. The best part was that everyone had a turn at steering. After the paddle-steamer we ate our lunch. Then as we walked along the street we visited a wood turner’s shop and we saw a musician playing the guitar. He asked us to form a band. We all got an instrument and played together. We were an amazing, awesome band!!! After playing in the band we went on a horse and coach ride on the ‘Cobb & Co.’ coach. It was lots of fun because we went along the main street and the
horses started off slow but got lots faster. Lastly we got on the bus to come back to school. We were feeling happy and tired after our big day! We
hope that one day we can visit Echuca again.

PIRATE DAY - Thursday June 7th 2018 Pirate Day is an annual national day of dressing up to raise awareness and much-needed funds for childhood brain cancer. Every dollar raised through Pirate Day is allocated to scientific studies focused on childhood brain cancer The Kids’ Cancer Project. Did you know: More than 190 children aged 1-14 die from cancer in Australia each year. Almost half of these deaths is related to a child with brain cancer.
In 2017, the Australian government expected brain cancer to be the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in people aged 0-24.
Junior School Council is supporting Pirate Day and are encouraging students to donate a Gold Coin to raise funds to support research into children’s cancer.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 11 ALL KIDS NEED TO PLAY Play has been called ‘child's work’ and that’s exactly what it is. Through a variety of games, children learn about the world and about themselves. When kids grow older, they still need to include play in their lives. In fact, adults need to as well. The whole point of play is that it’s fun. There’s no anxiety about competing with other, and no anxie-ty abut having to ‘get it right’. Play flows freely, is not structured m and can take many forms, from active ball games to puzzles and word games.
What you can do NOW Encourage kids to find ways to amuse themselves other than
turning to television or computer games. Make sure kids have access to play equipment like swings or
a trampoline. Go to the local pool for a swim and a splash around.
Good Idea!
Help your kids and their friends build a cubby house, a tree house, a billycart or a kite.
Top Tip
Making things together helps kids to learn problem solving techniques, become more re-sourceful and increases their communication skills.
~ Try these Healthy Sandwich Fillings ~
Try chicken, avocado and lettuce or vegemite and cheese. Vary meats - include lean ham, chicken, turkey, tuna or salmon (in
springwater). Add low fat cheeses - they’re a great source of calcium for
growing bones. Use a variety of vegetables - include grated carrots, zucchini,
lettuce, cucumber and sliced tomatoes (pat dry to prevent sandwiches going soggy, and place in between dry fillings).
Try different spreads such as chutney, cranberry sauce, mayonnaise, avocado, tomato relish, ricotta, cottage or cream cheese.
Cut healthy sandwiches in fun shapes for variety and to encourage eating Peanut butter, alfalfa, grated carrot and sultanas. Ham, crushed pineapple and grated cheese (with salsa or tomato spread).
Left over roast vegetables (with pesto). Roll a banana in wholegrain bread and drizzle with honey to make a “banana hot dog”. Make a mixture of tuna, mayonnaise, celery, carrot and corn and store in a container as an easy sandwich spread.

Food, Glorious Food
The following recommendations are part of our - Kids ‘Go for your life’ program at school: -
Children are encouraged to drink water only at school. Children should bring drink bottles filled with water only into class. Fruit and vegetables should be included in lunch boxes everyday. Chips, twisties, noodles (including two-minute noodles), biscuits and high sugar drinks are considered to be occasional food and should not be in lunch boxes.
Please note that during the break at 11.30 am the children are only permitted to eat nutritious food such as sandwiches, wraps, dairy foods, fruit and vegetables. Any occasional food that they bring can be eaten at the 1.30 pm break.
In the past some children have informed us that they are responsible for packing their own lunches and this may explain why we sometimes see lunch boxes with too much occasional food (chips and twisties mainly), and not enough healthy food in them.
The children have been informed that these occasional foods are not suitable as they: are very low in nutritional value are high in saturated fat and/or sugar and/or added salt. provide excess kilojoules
After revising the Healthy Food Pyramid and discussing the school’s policy on healthy eating with the children, we are now also asking for your sup-port. We need to ensure that the children are ready and able to learn each day by them having the necessary fuel (provided by healthy food) to keep them alert and receptive to learning.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
BOOK CLUB Book Club Issue 4 has been
