myPMI-H NEWS MARCH 2012 PMI Houston and Toastmasters Sponsoring a Scholarship Program for Unemployed Engineers

PMI Houston and Toastmaster joined efforts to create a new and exciting program to financially support our Project Management Institute Houston (PMI-H) members to join Toastmasters International. The scholarship will pay most of the cost of joining one of two PMI-H sponsored Toastmaster clubs. A few years ago, PMI-H sponsored two (2) Toastmasters clubs. The intent was to help PMI-H members improve the number one Project Management needed skill: communications. These Toastmaster Clubs have worked out an arrangement for un-employed PMI-H members to join one of these 2 clubs at a very low cost. The times have been difficult for many of us, through no fault of our own. Houston has seen many engineering layoffs in the last couple of years. Some of our brethren have been victims of this and need help to get back into the workforce and /or improve their professional skill set. Toastmasters International has a proven system and educational program. All professionals have one thing in common: if you are an engineer, a manager, or a salesman, communications is a necessary skill. PMI and many professional organizations agree that you must be able to communicate effectively with your peers, managers, and all other stakeholders on a daily basis. Currently there are over 250,000 members in 13,000 clubs in 109 countries. Houston has 200 clubs, and over 4,000 members; but, only 2 clubs support and practice PMI-based subjects as a regular part of the club agendas. Houston is showing signs of pulling out of this downturn and you should be ready for the next interview, conference call, or just starting work at a new company. We at North Houston Project Management Toastmasters (NHPMT) and Houston Galleria Project Management Toastmasters (HGPMT) are here eager and waiting to help you train and improve your communication and leadership skills. For additional information about this program, please go to: For North Houston area: NHPMT - http://northhouston.freetoasthost.org

For Galleria or West Houston area: HGPMT - www.hgpmt.org Allen Ashe – ([email protected]) – President HGPMT

Organizers of the scholarship program: Allen Ashe, Lee Jones, and Rashid Kapadia.
