PM Asia 2007 will again be staged in Shanghai during the Spring and will again feature leading speakers from the Chinese and international PM communities backed by a high-quality technical pro- gramme. The exhibition will once again feature international and Chinese PM companies and provide the business forum for discussion and interchange of information that proved to be such as suc- cess at PM Asia 2005. Last month's three-day con- ference was addressed by more than 50 top-quality speakers giving an audience of more than 130 delegates in-depth overviews and analy- ses of PM technologies in powder production, powder consolidation and sintering as well as applications of fer- rous, non-ferrous and hard- metals. The main programme was backed by well-attended workshops on metal injection moulding and soft magnetic iron composites for electric motors. All sessions were facilitated by simultaneous translation. "Reaction from those who attended, whether delegate, exhibitor or visitor was over- whelmingly positive", said Metal Powder Report editor and PM Asia 2005 team leader Richard Felton. "It was the right product in the right place, at the right time. Dele- gates were pleased at the quality of the content of the presentations and exhibitors reported heavy traffic and high levels of inquiries and busi- ness discussions. "This event obviously answered a need, and repre- sentatives of the Chinese PM associations who had sup- ported the staging of PM Asia 2005 confirmed that another event in the future would be welcome. Given that next year a PM World Congress is to be staged in Korea, we felt it appropriate to announce now the date of Spring, 2007 for the next PMAsia event." During the plenary presen- tations at the beginning of the conference delegates heard Cui Jainmin, president of the PM Association of the China Steel Construction Society and president of the Laiwu Iron & Steel Group Powder Metallurgy Co Ltd say that the typical passenger car made in China contains 10.4 pounds of PM parts. He reported there are about 50 iron and steel powder manufacturers in China, only four of which pro- duced more than 11,000 tonnes each during 2004. And Guan Cao Ni, director of Shanghai Automotive Co Ltd (SAIC), Powder Metallurgy Works, and director-general of the PM Association of China Machinery Parts, reported that the largest 34 PM parts makers in China produced about 93,000 tons of PM parts in 2004. SAIC, a leading PM company, reported sales of $14.4 million in 2004. Guan Cao Ni told the delegates that of some 680 PM parts mak- ers, fewer than five are con- sidered capable of making high-quality PM parts.
