A note from the Principal
KNOWLEDGE EXCELLENCE
INSERT SECTION HEADER TITLE HEREPrincipal’s note
“The aim of education is the knowledge, not of fact, but of values.” – Dean William Inge.
It is with joy and deep gratitude that I pen a few lines for the maiden magazine of PLG Allens View Academy.
Our fledgling school is the result of the vision of the founder of Pembury Lifestyle Group,Andrew McLachlan, who has consistently believed that it is our responsibility to improve thelives of others, to recognise the needs of those around us and to make a difference in ourcommunities. PLG Allens View Academy is one of the younger siblings in the family of PLGSchools, which was established in 2015 and already listed on the JSE AltX on 31 March 2017.It is with great excitement that we await the opening of the next five schools in 2018.
It is the strong Christian Ethos and the tenets that I value most – integrity, honesty, respectand love – that I share with PLG which brought me to Allens View in July 2016. Over the nextfew months, we awaited learner applications – sometimes with a little trepidation, but mostlywith elation as our numbers increased and the opening of the school in January 2017 becamea certainty. I would like to thank management for their continued support, understandingand the opportunities granted to us in establishing our school in this tranquil jewel of nature.
Our many prayers were answered as committed and involved parents put their trust in a newschool and continued to support us and help us build relationships that are rooted in trust, respect and a shared vision. I would like to thank our parents who faced – and are still facing– the growing pains of a brand new school with such utter faith, a precious sense of humourand incredible support. Education is, after all, a shared commitment between dedicatedteachers, motivated learners and enthusiastic and involved parents with high expectations –and we are blessed to have this particular combination.
We endeavour to fuse academic excellence with the strong value system which is ingrained inthe culture of PLG Schools. To achieve this, we strive to become the hub to initiate formaleducation enshrined in a deeply rooted value system, which is extended to our homes, wherethe values and enthusiasm for learning are further strengthened. In this pursuit of excellence,I would like to express my gratitude to our parent fraternity for their support in every aspect.

INSERT SECTION HEADER TITLE HEREPrincipal’s note
I laud the relentless efforts and irrepressible passion of our teaching staff to establish inour learners a love for learning, an infallible value system and offer individual attentionand support to all learners to recognise and pursue their purpose in life, to strive hardto accomplish their goals and to transcend mediocrity.
I owe appreciation also to our support staff for their loyalty, optimism andunderstanding of our children, our sport coach, who breezed in during the last part ofour first term of existence to help us realise our holistic approach to education to forgestrong minds along with strong bodies. A special word of thanks to our administratorand marketing co-ordinator, Tammy du Rand, who joined us in term 3 and immediatelylaunched herself into school life with such enthusiasm and a myriad of talents she ishappy to share. We owe the development of our choir to her – and I am eternallygrateful for her competent, meticulous and ever-positive handling of administrativeaffairs, parent requests and my brimming diary. Thank you too to Casey Salhab whonever tires of keeping our Facebook page buzzing, acts as our in-house photographer, concert producer and co-conductor of the choir .
I am confident that PLG Allens View will continue to be blessed with the opportunity toembrace many more learners who will grow and evolve with us consistently to walkonto the great stage of life and contribute a verse which will display the fruits of thespirit.

Casey is currently studying for a BEd Degree in Early Childhood Development
through UNISA. Her passion for developing the character, knowledge and
social interaction of young children started as a young girl with two much
younger siblings.
She has worked as an Au Pair and at a Homework Centre where she assisted
children with homework, studying and school projects. She also had to
opportunity to express her creative nature in assisting teachers at the
Centre with the development of art and play activities.
KATIE VICKERS
GRADE R TEACHER
Katie Vickers received her BEd Degree in teaching Foundation Phase from
UNISA and is currently teaching Grade R. She has 9 years’ teaching
experience in Grade R.
Katie has also tutored Grade 1-3 pupils at Kip McGrath, providing more
individualised support for learners experiencing difficulties in English,
Mathematics and Afrikaans.
She is a strong advocate for allowing learners to learn at their own pace and

ANNETTE MEYER
GRADE 1 TEACHER
Annette started her teaching career in 1976, teaching Afrikaans and PE to
high school learners in the Western Cape. This came to an end when the
family moved to Gauteng. Here she supplemented her Educational Degree
and Diploma with a National Higher Certificate in Residential Child Care,
raking in Top Student of the Year Award at the Faculty for Education and
Behavioural Science.
She then opened an Aftercare facility, assisting Grade 1 to 7 learners with
homework and studying. She returned to the formal educational arena, where
she taught classes from Grade 4 – 12 over a period of 17 years at the same
school. She was also HOD for the Foundation Phase for the last five years
there.
HILARY LABUSCHAGNE
GRADE 2 & 3 TEACHER
Hilary studied Primary School Education in Pretoria and then added a number
of qualifications in language studies in Kwa Zulu Natal. She started her
teaching career in Springs and taught at various Primary Schools in Gauteng
and later in Kwa Zulu Natal, where se became HOD for Languages in 1989.
Her love for language and her excellent qualifications led her to teach English
as a foreign language at a Chinese College where she also became Deputy
Principal in 2007.
Hilary’s teaching philosophy in her own words is, “Discipline and respect are
of the utmost importance in shaping young minds. Every culture is different
and important and should be celebrated and upheld in every classroom in
South Africa. These days, children are exposed to many damaging influences
on social media and it is the teachers’ duty to help them to make the right
choices in life.
Cindy Gambiza
Grade 4 & 5
Cindy obtained her BEd from UNISA. From an early age, she has always had
a passion for children and teaching has been the perfect place to fulfil this
passion and calling. She finds fulfilment in sharing knowledge with learners
as they discover the world around them, but mostly as they discover their
own abilities and work to their optimum potential.
Cindy takes her profession as a shaper of dreams seriously and strives to
help learners grow by experiencing different dimensions of education by
taking part in cultural activities and applying practical skills in lessons.
She also is passionate about integrity, good manners and kindness, which
everyone needs to be good citizens, as well as confidence without
arrogance.

KNOWLEDGE EXCELLENCE
INSERT SECTION HEADER TITLE HEREOpening Ceremony
We were honoured to have the founder and CEO of PLG Schools present to cut theceremonial ribbon on the 10th of January this year. He was presented with the ceremonialscissors by our very first registered student, Samih Kader, and the vision he shared with us asthe sun started setting will always be vivid in our minds.
A Candle Ceremony tradition was another first for Allens View and our hope is to seehundreds of shining lights paving the way for the next generation of students year after yearduring our opening ceremony far into the future.
The symbolism behind sharing the candles is simple – know that you lose nothing by sharingyour light with others. In fact, as each child received the flame from another and passed hisflame on to the next one, the stage grew brighter and the message was burnt into many amind.
PLG Allens View Academy learner - shine your light, live deliberately, grasp every opportunitygiven to you, be the best you that you can be, treat others in such a way that you never haveto say you’re sorry. Live in such a way that you can say – at the end of every school day, school year, and one day, ages and ages hence, at the end of your lives: “I regret nothing”.

Sport
After the dry spell in terms of the sport offering with very willing but not so ableteachers, our children’s excitement and joy at welcoming our very own sport coachknew no end. They literally all wanted to participate in every kind of sport everinvented!
We were fortunate to secure the services of Coach Bevan Bowers, a professionalfootballer who had played for Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs over thepast 15 years, but that is not his only interest.
Bevan has worked at the 4Change Foundation, where he worked in tandem withschools to teach children life skills and establish good discipline and a healthy self-esteem in countless children. Here at Allens View Academy, he takes care of thePhysical Education from Preschool to the Intermediate Phase, coaches cricket, soccer, hockey and athletics and our children are thriving.

The most important skills to masterare most certainly the fundamentals. In any sport, you'll find that the bestplayers are those who have masteredthe fundamentals. Now, just becausethey're fundamentals, it doesn't meanthey're necessarily easy to learn.
Eventually, they lead to success andenjoyment and build discipline andcharacter in every participant.

External providers join us at school once a week to extend the range of physical
activities and sport . Soccercize Stars work mainly with the Grade R and 1 learners and
these young enthusiasts learned so much about their favourite sport.
Soccercise Starz also came through in Term 4 to reward our future soccer stars for all
the hard work they had put in throughout the year. Our budding soccer players
learned everything from dribbling to ball control, and everything else in between. The
parents were treated to a fun and interactive demonstration.

Beyond Potential Kids showed our little athletes at PLG Allens View Academy just how
much fun exercise can be. From working on their gross motor skills, to spending hours
playing the most amazing games, our little ones could not get enough of Buzzi Bodies’
sessions.
The two coaches are positively bursting with a joy for life and energy that is absolutely
contagious. Thank you for so often making our days brighter with your zest for life and
love for our children.
The prize giving ceremony was a much-anticipated event at the end of the year and our
busy bodies positively beamed with pride when they were called onto the stage to
collect their well-deserved medal and certificates.

It is every little girl’s dream to be a ballerina – and Teacher Lauren certainly helped our
girls to come closer to that dream during the year.
A very big thank you to Teacher Lauren from Dance with Soul Ballet School for all the
incredible work that went into training our beautiful ballerinas. They were glowing with
pure pride when they were called onto stage at the end of a year’s practise sessions to
receive their certificates. Well done, girls. We are very proud of all the commitment

Starting us off for the evening were the little Trolls and Wonderland creatures. Theycame together to teach everyone a valuable lesson about happiness and friendship intheir own adorable way!

Mrs Meyer’s Grade 1 class had parents clapping and singing along when truly boredfairy-tale girls who grew tired of waiting for princes and white horses and fairygodmothers were rescued from the pages of old books as Superman, Batman, Ironman and Spiderman jumped to their rescue and shared a dance or two with them.
We have to admit, though, that the true gentleman stole every heart and all the littlecharacters reminded us that anyone can be a superhero, a lady and a gentleman –and that we don’t have to be what the world wants us to be – we can choose who wewant to be.

Granny lost the plot completely and thought she heard the tinkling sounds at MonteCasino.Lots of laughs were had by all.

During break time, they shared the traditional dishes lovingly prepared by our parents –thank you so much for participating in this with such generosity.
Children dished up food specific to their culture or the culture they represented in theiroutfits to one another. Some attacked the scrumptious dishes with relish, somenervously eyed a dish they had never heard of before – and some tried new dishes withmuch trepidation and doubt.
