Principal’s Message

The PURPOSE of Plenty Parklands Primary School is to educate children as

lifelong learners to shape a better Australia.

Once again our campers had a wonderful time and thoroughly revelled in the chance to try a whole range of exciting and often new experiences at both the Arrabri and Phillip Island camps. From all reports, including the ones from the kids themselves, everyone lived by the values and gave every activity their personal best. I will add my thanks and congratulations to those of one of the parents who attended camp this

year … “I' d like to say thank you for the experience of going on the Grade 3 Camp to Arrabri Lodge. It was a delight to see the kids challenge themselves with previously unknown experiences and tasks; to see their excitement at new opportunities and activities and interact with each other outside a classroom environment. They are fantastic.

Thanks too to all the staff who coordinated, participated and ran this wonderful event. I have no doubt you are extremely proud of all your teachers and those involved (Mr Norgate,

Ms Skrlj, Mr Jessup, Ms Sloley, Ms Nixon and Ms Lockett) leave no doubt that the kids they teach are worth their efforts. The group of parent helpers and student teachers also made this a enjoyable 3 days… Thank you once again and

yes, I would gladly do it all again.” School Council would also like to thank all the volunteers and staff who

helped make the year 3 and 4 camps so successful this year; we simply couldn’t do it without you. While year 3’s enjoyed the sensory trail and the rock wall, the 4’s tried to stay afloat. It is World Teachers’ Day this Friday and to celebrate you might like to wish any teachers you see a “Happy World Teachers’ Day”. Just a reminder that by enrolling your child/children at PPPS, you agreed to live and abide by the policies of the school; no matter how long it is since you first joined the community. One function of School Council is to review, suggest changes if needed, and approve our policies. At our School Council meeting this week, we approved some small changes to our Student Dress Code Policy. I have attached a copy of the updated policy in this week’s newsletter. The policy now clarifies, That uniform items must be dark navy. The introduction of the new optional items of a dark navy warm winter jacket with logo, and dark navy beanie and scarf, both of which are available at the uniform shop. That dark navy stockings or dark navy leggings can only be worn with the school dress, not in place of tracksuit pants. I will also take this chance to remind you of some of the main point which have not changed, As the school colors are dark navy and red, no other colors are to be worn. Students must wear red or dark navy hair bands, ribbons and headscarves. The Dress Code applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, on school excursions, camp when appropriate and when students represent the school. Parents seeking exemptions to the dress code due to religious beliefs, family background, student disability or health condition must apply in writing to the Principal. Loose or dangly pieces of jewellery are major safety issues when children play games at recess and participate in P.E. and sport. They are extremely dangerous when they catch. Small gold, silver, red or blue stud or sleeper earrings acceptable, no other body piercings. Small chain with a religious icon can be worn under clothing so that it can’t be caught on anything or seen. No bracelets or bangles, regardless of religious significance, because they can catch, except medical bracelets, which are not classified as jewellery. A firm fitting watch is acceptable. Hairstyles that are appropriate for primary school children – no mohawks or shaved hair patterns, etc. Tie long hair back to minimalise transfer of nits or lice and to keep hair out of eyes in order to maximise learning. Clear nail polish only. If your child is wearing a non dress code item please ensure this item is replaced with the correct uniform item. If your chi ld is wearing an item which is not dark navy like our uniform items, please replace them with the correct uniform item/color when you next need to buy that item. Thank you. We are looking forward to our year 1 and 2 students starting their swimming program this week; fortunately it is an indoor venue, and to our year 2 students heading off on their day camp this Friday. We trust that the kids will enjoy and learn from both programs. Claire McInerney Principal

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE CONT...

2016 PARENT PAYMENT As per the Parent Payments Policy, The Education & Training Reform Act 2006 empowers school councils to charge parents for goods and services used in the course of instruction of their children, as well as to raise funds. School Council supplements Department of Education and Training’s funds by requesting payments from parents for Essential Education Items. Optional Extras such as the instrumental music program are offered on a user pays basis and parents can choose whether or not their child participates. Voluntary Contributions are donations for specific projects. School Council has set the amount of $148 per child for Part A of the Essential Education items (Classroom and Specialist Requisites), only a $3.00 increase from last year, and thanks you for your vital support of the programs at PPPS and the education of your child. As with all parent payments to the school, School Council will provide an opportunity for parents experiencing financial difficulties, to enter into alternative and confidential payment arrangements. The 2016 Parent Payment is comprised of three sections: Essential Education Items

Part 1 – Classroom and specialist program requisites Part 2 – Book pack with stationary items as selected by the teaching staff

Voluntary Contribution to Buildings and Grounds Voluntary Fundraising Contribution Our official supplier is an Australian company, Maxim Office Group. All orders will be processed by the school and stationery packs for current prep to year 5 children will be available for collection from the school hall on Friday 4 December. All Prep to year 5 students should have received the 2016 information now. If you do not have a copy of this please see the office staff. P R E P T R A N S I T I O N P R O G R A M At PPPS we place great importance on involving our next year’s Prep students in a program to familiarise them with the school environment, classroom settings, this year’s prep teachers and their buddies for the following year. They also have the opportunity to meet some of their peer group for 2016. The program involves four afternoon sessions for each child. They are in a group of up to 6 pre-school children and work in the prep classroom with the current preps, participating in a number of school learning activities that result in something to take home and discuss with their family. The fourth session is an activity involving all the new preps, with the parents welcome to join in at the end of the session. The children work for two sessions with the 2016 buddies. For next year our Prep Buddies will be our year 6 students. Whilst the transition students are in class, we also provide information and chat sessions for parents and carers. These sessions have allowed us to share information about PPPS with new families and also created an opportunity for parents to ask questions and talk with each other. Some of our current PPPS families who have prep students starting have also attended these sessions. They have freely shared information and their experiences at PPPS. We very much appreciate this support. The final component of the transition program for this year is a Parent Information Evening that provides parents with a full overview of the child’s prep year. The date for this year is Thursday 19th November. It will be held in the school hall from 7pm- 8.30pm. Leanne Weston Prep Transition Coordinator.

Divisional Volleyball Finals

A fantastic effort was displayed last Friday October 16th when the Bushranger girls volleyball team attended the Divisional Finals at Marymede. Although they were defeated in both of their games to Lalor

Gardens and Marymede the scores in both of the games were very close. Their coach, Mr. C-C, was extremely impressed with the girls' teamwork and skills, especially in the second game against Marymede, who went on to win the tournament. The girls have been training every Friday before school during the winter and should be very proud of their dedication and growth as both players and teammates.

INTERESTED IN PLAYING NETBALL? Victoria Police Netball Club is starting to play at Diamond Creek Force Netball Association in the 2015 season. WATER BOTTLE DECORATING

Almost 60% of boys and 40% of girls have more than one high sugar drink every day. These include flavoured mineral water, soft drinks, juice, cordial and some sports drinks. Sweet drinks are linked to tooth decay and are a significant factor for overweight and obesity. Decorating plain water bottles can encourage their usage and help increase water consumption. Make sure

you use paints that will not run when wet. Children can be as creative as they like! This activity is perfect for times of boredom or keeping kids entertained on weekends. Last opportunity for Volunteer Training for 2015

Are you thinking of being a helper at PPPS in term 4 or

for end of year events?

Please note that if you attended a training session in the past, you do NOT need to attend another one. ‘Once trained, we have you for life!’

For new volunteers we are offering two briefings this term, one daytime and one evening.

So that we can strengthen our interdependent partnership between Plenty Parklands school and the community we offer training sessions for parent and community members. Over the years our students have benefited from the work and dedication of hundreds of helpers. We are always ready and willing to welcome even more. You may be a new member of our community and keen to offer your help while also getting to know other community members.

The sessions will outline your role and responsibilities with regard to Privacy, Work Cover, Harassment and Occupational Health and Safety legislation. In line with our values, particularly those of Care, Trust and Respect, you will understand that the safety and care of your children are the most important considerations when implementing a program such as volunteer helpers. Also with legislation related to a range of issues it is imperative that ALL volunteers are briefed before they are able to help in any way at school. You need only attend one of the briefings.

This training includes everyone who would like to start to help in any or all of the following areas; canteen, Parents Social and Fundraising sub committee (PSF), interschool sport, uniform shop, classroom helpers (in any area of the curriculum), excursions, special event days, fun day at the end of the year, fruit distribution, gardening, sports coaching, P.E. programs such as the Prep Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) and any transportation of students. In fact, anyone who helps at the school in any way. Please note that helpers on school camps have a special briefing prior to camp. Term four training dates are: Thursday 29 October from 9:15 to 9:45am Or Tuesday 17 November 6 – 6:30pm

Remember that you need to participate in a training session in order to help in any capacity at the school. The briefing takes about 30 minutes and will be held in the conference room (library) or staff lounge (staff room).

After completion of this short briefing, you will be welcome to help at PPPS at any time in the future in a ‘one off’ or ongoing situation.

Please see this invitation as an opportunity to get to know other members of our school community while also providing the students of PPPS with invaluable support and assistance.

Don’t worry; there are no hard questions to answer or problems to solve. You just need a willingness to help and we’ll do the rest!! We look forward to seeing you at one of these sessions. Please complete and return the slip below by Wednesday 28 October . "……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….……….
