Dear Parent
I hope you have had a good Easter holiday and that the Summer term has started well for you.
I’m writing to keep you updated with news from the school that I hope you will find interesting
and helpful.
This term’s events:
I’d particularly like to invite you and your child to the following events:
Our Year 9 production this term is House of Blood. A curse haunts the House of Atreus, passed
down the generations and written in blood. Can the cycle of murder and revenge never be
broken? Inspired by Aeschylus’s Oresteia, our students tell the story of a dark and disturbing
Greek myth. The production takes place from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 May. If you would like
to attend, please email [email protected] to book your tickets.
This term’s Lower School production is Coram Boy, adapted by Helen Edmundson from the
children's novel by Jamila Gavin. Coram Boy follows the tale of two cities, Gloucester and London,
and of two boys: Toby, saved from an African slave ship, and Aaron, illegitimate heir to a great
estate. It will take place from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 June, and again tickets can be booked
via our box office: [email protected].
For both events, please mention that you are a new family joining in September, and you will be
offered complimentary tickets.
Our annual New Parents’ Tea takes place on Saturday 23 June at 4pm, and I would be delighted
to see you and your child there. It’s an opportunity for you to meet other parents and children
joining in September, and there will be lots of current parents and teachers around to answer any
questions you have. More details are included in this Admissions pack. You’ll need to register
online to confirm your attendance.
Sporting Success
Our students enjoyed some fantastic sporting successes last term. The U12 and U13 netball teams
won the Kent county championships, the U15 Rugby Sevens side reached the final of the Kent
Cup (narrowly missing out on victory!), the senior girls retained the prestigious King Henry VIII
cross country relay title, and there were also lots of individual and team successes in swimming,
tennis, skiing, fencing and cricket. Our U14 Hockey team have also reached the national finals
this month.

Higher Education update
Students applying to UK universities have been successful in their applications to some of the
most competitive institutions so far, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE and
Durham. We are delighted that a total of 42 offers have been made to our students by the
University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge (23 from Oxford; 19 from Cambridge).
Nearly 20 per cent of our Upper Sixth received offers from US and international universities,
including US offers from Stanford (two), Yale (two), Princeton, Brown, Yale-NUS, Duke,
Columbia and Chicago where overall admit rates are less than ten per cent.
Looking ahead
We’re all very excited about the new Science and Technology Centre and Sixth Form Centre,
both of which will have just opened as your child joins the school. And in 2019 we will open a
new boys’ 13-18 boarding house on the Park Grange estate.

MINIBUS SERVICE BETWEEN SEVENOAKS STATION AND THE SCHOOL
The School runs a minibus service from Sevenoaks Station to the School. The school minibuses
make several round trips each morning between 07.45 and 08.20. As the school day begins at
08.30 sharp, we ask those coming by rail, to travel on trains which are timetabled to arrive at or

school activities from 16:15 – 18:00.

Payments will not be made on the minibus.
Bus passes are issued at the beginning of each academic year. If your child no longer requires the
service for any reason, such as moving house or receiving a permit to park at the school, notice
must be given before the end of the current term. Bus passes no longer required must be returned

A. Free First Term Lesson Scheme (Year 7 and Year 9 only):
We are keen to encourage students to start to play an instrument if they have not had the opportunity
before. We have set up a scheme which will pay the first term’s fees for a certain number of students on
specific instruments. The scheme also covers instrument hire but not music or consumables, ie reeds. At
the end of the “free term” students will have the option of continuing the lessons, charged at the normal
rates. Instruments on offer are: French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Oboe, Bassoon, Double Bass,
Organ, Viola and Harp.
1st choice instrument: 2nd choice instrument:
(In order to make an informed choice, we are offering students interested in the scheme, an opportunity to try out
two of these instruments. This session will be on 23rd June, between 3-4pm in the music department.) I have noted that half a term’s notice must be given (by the Friday preceding half-term to discontinue
at the end of term) and the School’s recommendation that all instruments are named and insured. I
understand that the Music Department may enter my child for music and mock exams on my behalf.
Music lessons are offered during academic time only and will routinely be scheduled on a rotational
basis, with the exception of the sixth form pupils.

Dear Parent,
RE: Trinity/LAMDA Lessons
We are able to offer solo or duo Trinity/LAMDA lessons to students, which help to develop a
broad set of key life skills which include an awareness of personal presentation, speech and
communication, movement and body language, management of nerves and confidence building.
These key skills are necessary for all, not just those interested in developing their skills as an
actor. They support academic work and other drama classes/productions in this way, as well as
developing imagination, creativity, performance skills and literacy.
Trinity/LAMDA lessons are individually tailored to what the student is interested in focussing
on, selecting a suitable syllabus that can cover acting, speaking in public, writing, mime,
devising, verse and prose and improvisation. During the lessons, we work on vocal and physical
technique, textual analysis and the process of developing a character or performance persona.
Dependant on the syllabus chosen there is the opportunity to work on poems, improvisation,
devised pieces, and a broad range of texts including classical texts from playwrights such as
Shakespeare and modern texts from playwrights such as Dennis Kelly (who wrote the script for
Matilda The Musical). Lessons are fun and informative, offering a great platform to explore
individual talent and to accumulate specific and useful performance/life skills with the exams
and showcases providing a clear goal.
Additionally advanced grade levels for Trinity/LAMDA can contribute towards UCAS points
when applying to University, which undoubtedly strengthen applications. Trinity/LAMDA
lessons are also often used as the skill element towards the Duke of Edinburgh award.
Sevenoaks School has three trained actors, Mrs K Brown, Mrs A Cordon Bates and Miss A
Comper who teach both Trinity and LAMDA board examinations. The lesson is charged and
added to your bill at the end of each term. Please contact Miss A Comper for more information.

Dear Lower Sixth,
We are delighted that you will be joining the Sevenoaks Sixth Form in September and would like to take
this opportunity to introduce you to the Institute for Higher Education and Professional Insight at
Sevenoaks. We aim to support you throughout your Sixth Form career and will help you at every step of
your application to university whether it be in the UK, US or elsewhere.
We take a view that the Michaelmas term of the Lower Sixth is a time to get to know the school, make new
friends and settle down and that you need a bit of breathing space from big decisions about your future.
To this end, you will have your first introductory Higher Education Assembly at the end of Michaelmas
term. Subsequently, you will communicate your potential areas of degree interest and we will allocate you
an appropriate Higher Education Advisor with whom you will meet in the Lent term. All Higher
Education meetings are recorded in your individual Higher Education Profile where you keep a record of
any activities which might be linked to your future university application.
In the Lent term you will also have a series of talks called ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Degrees in...’ which will
give you a taster of what to expect from different university courses. Additionally, regular talks from
visiting speakers from universities around the country may help to inform some of your thinking
surrounding university applications. The summer term is when you will receive your predicted grades;
the Higher Education Evening takes place this term too and outlines the UK university admissions process
for your parents. Our Higher Education Day at the very end of the summer term sees you actually embark
on your official university applications.
The Department has a dedicated US and International University advisor who provides additional support
to all students applying outside the UK for their undergraduate degree. If you think that you might be
interested in applying to study in the US, you are invited to an evening event which will focus on SAT/ACT
tests and how to choose the right US university for you. Further details of the event date and time will be
sent to you at a later date. Please do come along, parents are very welcome too. US university admissions
officers begin their visits to the School from September onwards so look out for details of their
presentations in the weekly school Bulletin. Our extensive programme of events over the course of the
Lower Sixth is designed to help you decide if the US is a good option for you and will provide you with
all the information you need to plan for your applications in the Michaelmas Term of your Upper Sixth
year.
We hope that this message leaves you reassured about the level of support you will receive for the next
stage of your life from our department which is located in the new Sixth Form Global Study Centre.
Have a fantastic summer holiday and we look forward to seeing you in September.
Very best wishes

Dear Parent,
New Parents’ Tea, Saturday 23 June 2018 in the Dining Hall.
Parents, guardians and students starting the school in September 2018 are warmly invited to join us for the New Parents’ Tea on Saturday 23 June 2018, 4:00–5:30pm in the Dining Hall.
This very popular informal event will give you and your children the opportunity to meet other new families who are joining Sevenoaks School in September 2018. Siblings are also welcome to attend.
Members of the Friends of Sevenoaks (FoS) will be there to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend, for example if you live overseas, please be assured there will be plenty more opportunities to join FoS events in the future, or you can get in touch via the contact details given on the FoS pages of the school website.
Although some senior staff members will be present, this tea focuses on parents and children meeting one another rather than providing an opportunity for parents to meet staff. Tutor meetings will take place after the children start in September.
Finally, the Second Hand Uniform Shop will be open for you to visit during the tea. Payment for any items purchased needs to be with cash or cheques on the day.
To confirm your attendance, please register online here – www.sevenoaksschool.org/tea before Friday 25 May 2018. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Joanna Newsome (FoS Chair), at [email protected]
We look forward to welcoming you on 23 June.

Dear Parent,
As Director of PE and Sport, I wanted to introduce myself, and let you know how much I am looking
forward to welcoming your son or daughter to the school. The following pack will contain important
information about the sport provision and opportunities at the school, such as pre-season training and
invitations to join sports clubs among others, but I thought I would also take this opportunity to introduce
you to sport at Sevenoaks.
We seek to promote a positive, lifelong approach to sport and fitness through the provision of a wide
choice of activities and the development of excellence in those who choose to pursue an activity to a higher
level. Last year Sevenoaks was placed as the 9th best Independent School for sport in the country by School
Sport Magazine after a number of our teams reached the nationals finals. We also pride ourselves on
providing opportunities to as many students as possible, which has been very evident during the last year
where we played in over 1,100 fixtures across 165 teams in 18 different sports. Over 80% of students
represented the school at some point during the year, which includes 100% representation in the Lower
School and 90% in the Middle School.
Parents of Lower School pupils, I am keen to make you aware of our fixture days, as these are often away
games, and therefore return times are often after the usual 4.10pm finish to the school day. Games
afternoons are on Wednesdays and Fridays so do please consider this if you are planning other activities
away from school.
In addition to the games programme there are many other opportunities to get involved
in sport ranging from Fencing and Gymnastics to Futsal, Dance and Basketball. A more
detailed breakdown of the opportunities on offer can be on the website here:
https://www.sevenoaksschool.org/parents/co-curricular-info/ You will also find a link to the sports and
lifestyle clubs offered before and after school.
We also have a School Sports App, which is accessible from the sports pages of the school website. It is a
useful tool for parents and contains all information such as fixtures, results, locations, team sheets and
timings. We encourage all parents and students to download the app, as this is the easiest way for us to
advise you of team changes, match cancellations etc. More information will be provided once your child
joins the school.
We will also be hosting a range of sports development camps through the school holidays (May half term
and during the summer). These are 3 day camps and specific sport taster days – more details are available
here – www.sevenoakssportscamps.co.uk
I hope you find the following pack useful and exciting and we look forward to another successful sporting
year.
If you have any queries in the meantime, please do contact me – [email protected]
Yours Sincerely,
James Emmitt

Sports Pre-season Training Dates
Each year we plan to release pre-season sport dates so you are aware of what will be taking place
and when. This letter is designed to provide you with a basic idea of the sport, the dates and the
age groups involved so that you may enter them into your diary, should they be relevant to you.
In addition to this, Heads of Sport will send out a separate letter nearer to the time with more
specific details such as timings and locations.
Please note that there are a large variety of different camps we put on during the holidays, which
may be chargeable due to costs such as pitch hire, guest coaches, catering etc. In addition to these

Dear Parent,
I am the new Shooting Master at Sevenoaks School having started in November 2017. I have
already competed in one Long Range World Championships with the Great Britain U21 and am
now Adjutant for the Great Britain U25 Team for the 2019 World Championships where we shoot
up to 1000 yards with.
Shooting is an increasingly popular sport whereby boys and girls of all ages compete on a level
playing field; one of the few sports in existence to do so. We have our own newly renovated 25
yard range at school where we train and compete in postal competitions. We also have access to
Bisley National Shooting Centre in Surrey where we shoot at distances between 50 metres and
1000 yards. In the summer months, when the weather is more pleasant, the club is starting to
branch out into clay pigeon practice as an additional discipline at West Kent Shooting School.
Our club is able to take total beginners with no experience and train them up to a high standard
in just a matter of months, providing they have the right dedication. We shoot five afternoons a
week from Tuesday to Saturday with Monday, Tuesday and Saturday specifically being
dedicated to our sports shooters, and an option for those in Year 10 and above with prior
agreement from myself. Please note we have a limited number of places available for shooting.
Shooting is a sport unlike any other and can be the making of any child. Emphasising discipline
and focus, it is a sport that develops the mind along with the body.
If you have any questions about the range or the shooting we do, please feel free to get in touch
by emailing me at [email protected]

FOR YEAR 9 ONLY
Sailing at Sevenoaks
Dear Parent,
Sailing is a popular and successful sport at Sevenoaks School. A limited number of pupils may
start sailing in Year 9, with training and competitions taking place at a local sailing club on Bough
Beech reservoir.
The school has a fleet of 26 Firefly dinghies and 23 RS Fevas, supported by four 4.8m safety boats.
School teams take part in school, university and open events with a high level of success. The
school has won the International Schools Championships 18 out of the last 22 years and are
currently the leading British School in team racing, with the team recently qualifying to represent
GBR U19’s at the 2015 team racing world championships. We have also competed on the RS Feva
circuit in the last few years. The School also has excellent sailing coaches, including Head of
Sailing Andy Cornah, ISAF team racing world champion 2011 and UK team racing national
champion on several occasions.
For pupils wishing to join sailing start in Year 9, previous experience isn’t essential but as we
have a limited numbers of places, priority is likely to be given to those that do. If possible before
starting pupils should complete an RYA level 2 course - there are several training centres in the
area that offer this over the summer, the best being Bewl Valley SC or Bewl Valley outdoor centre
(details of centres can be found on the RYA website www.rya.org.uk). If you need any further
help with this please let me know.
In Year 9 sailing takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays during the Michaelmas, Lent and
Summer Terms in the normal games sessions. Those selected to sail will not be able to play other
team sports that take place at the same time. Many pupils carry on with squash, tennis and
swimming, but need to do this after school.
Pupils who sail are currently charged £150 per term - which equates to around £7 per session.
They must also purchase their own sailing clothing which can be done independently or through
the school - initially there will be clothing available to borrow.
Should you wish your son/daughter to choose sailing in Year 9 please complete the attached
form and return it to the school FAO Andrew Cornah, master in charge of sailing, or via email.
Further information will then be sent out in due course.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me: [email protected]
Yours Faithfully,
Andrew Cornah
