12th AusIMM UndergroundOperators’ Conference 201424 – 26 March 2014, Adelaide, South Australia

Your InvitationOn behalf of the organising

committee, we invite you to attend

the 12th AusIMM Underground

Operators’ Conference, to be held

in Adelaide, South Australia on

24-26 March 2014.

In the past decade, a turbulent global

financial environment has created a

new cost of production environment.

The global demand increase, the

reduction in head grades and the

increased cost of mining have combined to induce cash margin stress

at current metal prices. Further challenges into the future include

increasing our safety performance and ensuring that our workforce is

well trained and able to make positive operational decisions on the job.

The AusIMM series of Underground Operators’ conferences has

become the benchmark for sharing underground operational

experiences, good practices and lessons learnt in Australasia.

The theme for the conference is Managing the Margin, where

experiences in planning, scheduling, management of operations,

improved productivity, dilution control and other improvements can

contribute to the value of ore produced and improve the cash margin.

Papers presented will relate to an operating or planned mine, with an

emphasis on lessons and good practices that mine operators can

benefit from. The broad topic headings for the conference are:

• sustainable development

• mines under consideration

• development

• production

• mine services

• mine management

• novel experiences and case studies

• new technologies and their applications.

The organising committee seeks your support and involvement in

this conference by your attendance and participation in the associated

tours and workshops planned for the event.

We look forward to welcoming you to South Australia in 2014.

Sincerely,

Chris Carr FAusIMM(CP)

The operation comprises an open pitmine, a newly developed underground mine, a grindingand flotation processing plant with a 10Mt/a capacity, apermanent village and a haulage road, power line and bore field. The day includes anunderground tour with overview of the geology and geotechnical context, groundcontrol and monitoring systems, ventilation, production and development, ore handlingand communications. Participants will spend the night at the village having a BBQdinner with the underground team.

On day two delegates will fly 130 km to BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam, where they will betreated to a day tour which includes an underground visit, lunch and presentations.

Officially opened in 1988, the orebody is the world’s fifth largest known copperdeposit and largest known uranium deposit. Olympic Dam employs almost 4000workers and plays an important role in the South Australian economy.
