Safety PracticesThe following safety practices may be used as a guidewhile operating the welder on the job.

The operator bears ultimate responsibility for following allmanufacturer’s instructions and warnings, regulations andsafety rules of their employer and/or any state or federallaw.

Platform CapacityThe platform rated work load is the total weight of thepersonnel and equipment that may be lifted in the plat-form. The work load is stated on the platform rating plac-ard mounted on the toeboard at the rear of the platform.

The welder and its associated accessories are consid-ered as equipment and reduces the platform capacity by110 lb (50 kg).

Welding Ground ConnectionDo not use the aerial platform as a ground connectionwhen welding. The welding ground clamp must be at-tached to the same structure that is being welded. Elec-trical current flow can be very intense, causing seriousinternal damage to some aerial platform components.

Protective GearMake certain to wear proper protective gear to help pre-vent weld burns. Wear leather welding gloves, leatherapron, welding chaps, leather shoes, and eye protection.Wear a welding helmet with the proper lens for the typeof welding being performed.

VentilationBreathing welding fumes can be a hazard to your health.Fumes should be ventilated away from your breathingzone.

Flammable MaterialsWelding can cause fires or explosions. Do not wear syn-thetic clothing or carry butane lighters, matches, etc. inyour pocket while welding.

Have a fire extinguisher in the area to extinguish anyfires.

Electrical ShockElectrical shock from the electrode or wiring can causedeath or serious injury. Do not weld in damp or wet con-ditions.

Use dry nonflammable insulating material such as rub-ber mats or plywood to cover the area that is in contactwith the work.

Inspect the power connections, cords, and welding cablesbefore each use to make sure they are in proper workingcondition and are not damaged.

While welding, protect the cables from sharp edges, hotmetal, and the hot electrode or electrode holder. Be mindfulof the location of the cables to avoid becoming wrappedin them.

Operator ResponsibilitiesThe welder package has built-in safety features and hasbeen factory tested for compliance with Snorkel specifi-cations and industry standards. However, the welder canbe potentially dangerous in the hands of untrained or care-less operators.

AWarningThe potential for an accident increases when theaerial platform and associated equipment is oper-ated by personnel who are not trained and autho-rized. Death or serious injury can result from suchaccidents. Read and understand the information inthis manual, the welder manual, and on the plac-ards and decals on the machine before operatingthe aerial platform and welder on the job.

Important Safety Information

Training is essential and must be performed by a quali-fied person. Become proficient in knowledge and actualoperation before using the welder on the job. You mustbe trained and authorized to perform any functions of theaerial platform. Operation of the welder must be withinthe scope of the manufacturer’s specifications.

AWarningThe potential for an accident increases when propersafety procedures are not followed while welding.Death or serious injury can result from such acci-dents. Read, understand, and follow the safety in-formation in the welder manufacturer’s Operator’sManual to help prevent injury from sparks, moltenmetal, and sharp edges.

The operator bears ultimate responsibility for following allmanufacturer’s instructions and warnings, regulations andsafety rules of their employer and/or any state or federallaw.

Do not modify this welder package and its associatedcomponents without prior written consent of the SnorkelEngineering Department. Modification may void the war-ranty, adversely affect stability, or affect the operationalcharacteristics of the aerial platform.

Platform Welder – 0083991 5

The platform rated work load is the total weight of thepersonnel and equipment that may be lifted in the plat-form. The work load is stated on the platform rating plac-ard mounted on the toeboard at the rear of the platform.

ADangerThe aerial platform can tip over if it becomes un-stable. Death or serious injury can result from a tip-over accident. Do not exceed the capacity valuesindicated on the platform rating placard.

Capacity values indicate the rated lifting capacity and donot indicate aerial platform stability.

The operator bears ultimate responsibility for ensuringthat the aerial platform is properly set up for the particularconditions encountered.

The welder and its associated accessories are consid-ered as equipment and reduces the platform capacity by110 lb (50 kg).

Machine SetupUse the following procedure to operate the platform welder.

1. At the lower controls, place the emergency stopswitch in the on position and turn the start switch on.Place the controls switch in the platform position.

2. On dual fuel machines, set the fuel switch to eitherLPG or gasoline.

3. Open the shut-off valve on the tank if using LPG.

4. Enter the platform and securely close the gate.

5. Attach the fall restraint lanyard to one of the anchorpoints.

6. Pull the emergency stop button out.

7. Turn the anti-restart master switch to start, then re-lease it to on. The engine will not start if the switch isleft in the on position for 30 seconds or longer beforeturning it to start. The switch must be turned back tooff before the engine will start.

8. Let the engine warm to operating temperature.

AC GeneratorThe generator is used to supply power to the welder, onlywhen the engine is running and the machine is station-ary. Machine functions will not operate when the machine/generator selector switch is in the generator position.

Platform Welder Operation

ACautionCold hydraulic oil does not flow well and may pro-duce improper generator output voltage. Improperoutlet voltage can damage some electrical powertools and equipment. Warm the hydraulic oil be-fore operating the generator.

Do not operate the generator unless the temperature ofthe hydraulic oil is at least 100°F (38°C). Refer to theaerial platform Operator’s Manual for a hydraulic oil warm-up procedure.

Continuous operation of the generator and/or the aerialplatform will cause the hydraulic oil temperature to in-crease. Turn the generator off when AC power is not re-quired to help keep the oil temperature from rising.

The generator is nominally rated for a 60% duty cycle. That means the generator can be operated continuouslyfor 18 minutes out of every 30 minutes.

Periodically monitor the hydraulic oil thermometer to makesure the temperature does not exceed the maximum op-erating temperature of 200°F (93°C). Remember that theabient air temperature can effect the temperature of thehydraulic oil in the reservoir.

Use the following procedure to supply power to the elec-trical power outlet for operation of the welder.

1. Plug the generator cord into the outlet on the wiringbox.

2. Start the engine and place the machine/generatorselector switch (refer to Figure 1) in the generatorposition.

Figure 1 – Upper Control Panel

The engine will run at high idle while the generator isoperating. The generator will continue to operate as longas the engine is running and the switch is in the genera-tor position.

Figure 4 – Platform Welder

The welder mounting bracket is made so that it can notbe repositioned or removed without first removing thewelder from it. The latch may be locked in the closedposition to help prevent the welder and bracket from be-ing removed.

Make certain that the generator cord is connected to theoutlet on the upper control panel (refer to Figure 5).

Figure 5 – Three-Phase Electrical Power Outlet

With the welder cord plugged into the 208 VAC 3-phaseoutlet as shown in Figure 2, place the machine/generatorswitch in the generator position while the engine is run-ning to supply electrical power to the welder.

Platform Welder Operation

Electrical PowerThe electrical power outlet at the platform has two, 3-prong electrical connectors (refer to Figure 2). The topconnector is a 208 VAC outlet and the bottom is a 120volt outlet.

Figure 2 – Single-Phase Electrical Power Outlet

The output of each outlet is limited by an Equipment Leak-age Current Interrupter (ELCI) for ground fault circuit pro-tection and a circuit breaker. Refer to Figure 3.

Figure 3 – Right Side Of Turntable

If tripped, the ELCI will reset automatically by turning thegenerator off and then back on.

ACautionIf a circuit breaker trips, determine the cause andcorrect the problem. Damage to the electrical sys-tem may result if the cause of the problem is notcorrected.

The circuit breakers must be manually reset. The toggleswitch will normally be up. If a circuit breaker trips, theswitch will be down and will need to be placed back inthe up position to reset it.
