During the spring term the children planted a variety of seeds. First they discussed what plants need to grow.
After putting compost into the planter containers children put Strawberry, Radish and lettuce seeds in to grow.
Every day the children took it in turns to water the seeds and small plants.
After a few weeks they started to grow.
Everyone wanted to help look after the plants
Children noticed that as it got warmer the plants grew. “They need the sun”
As the weather got warmer, the plants grew and grew.
By the end of May the lettuces were ready to harvest.
The children put on their gardening gloves and pulled them up!
The children pulled the lettuce carefully from the bottom of the leaves.
When Lauren saw the roots she wasn’t that sure she wanted to eat the lettuce! The children learnt that the roots suck up the water to make it grow.
Lots of children harvested the radishes. They asked lots of questions and were really surprised to see the part you actually eat is in the soil.
“It’s Pink!”
“ It has roots for the water to go in.”
“It will have to be washed, we can’t eat the mud.”
The children counted 15 radishes and began to look at how different they all were.
The children shared the magnifiers to get a closer look
The children not only learnt about patience and changes over time, but this activity educated them about where food can come from.
To help them make healthy choices in life we extended this activity inside by making sandwiches.
The vegetables the children had grown and harvested were part of the choices they could use for their fillings.
