It marked a turning point for the company which

has been designing and fabricating superior

heavy equipment attachments since 1946. Be-

ing a privately owned enterprise the owners

were left with two choices: Take the insurance

money and retire from the business or see this

tragedy as a fresh chance and aspire to a new,

cutting-edge view of the heavy equipment man-

ufacturing process.

After only one day of downtime Craig

employees and management were back at

work in temporary offices planning for the new

future they would build together.

In May of 2005 an

electrical fire consumed

the Craig Manufacturing

facility in Hartland

CUSTOM PARTS PRODUCTION

Less than eight months later the new world-class

71,000sq/ft ,15 acre facility had been

designed, built and equipped

When the Craig management team

and lean manufacturing consultants

got together to design the facility

they knew that a well designed

plant would allow the company to

provide even better service and

streamline the production process.

Core functions of the plant were as-

sessed and laid-out based on Lean

Manufacturing principles. A square-

shaped facility allows all functions

to be physically close without being

crowded. Linear flow means parts

get through the shop with as little

travel as possible.

When it came time to build, the

shop equipment was laid out for

efficiency and the plant was built

around it.

Once the parts are cut, machined

and fabricated four welding lines

consisting of a fitter and four weld-

ers work to finish the assembly.

Each working group is equipped

with variable height hydraulic

tables, personal jib cranes, net-

worked computer terminals and

smoke nozzle equipped boom

welders for ideal working condi-

tions.

Lean production allows for a FIFO

(First In First Out) process which

minimizes the work in process

currently inside the plant. By

maximizing productive efficiency

while minimizing unessential stock

on-hand previously unimaginable

capacity is handled with less floor-

space than the factories of days

gone-by.

Multiple levels of quality control are

conducted at each stage of the pro-

cess to ensure that the final product

reaches the customer to their exact

specifications.

All attachments are painted in-

house using a modern downdraft

paint booth. Using superior prim-

ers and paints Craig Attachments

match OEM machine colors per-

fectly.

One of the biggest advantages our customers have in

dealing with Craig is our ability to meet their specific

job site goals by helping them design and implement

custom attachment solutions.

Our engineering department spends countless hours in

the field researching jobsite requirements and talking

with operators. When an attachment has to work, it

needs to work right. There is no substitute for on-the-

ground knowledge. This commitment to learning allows

our customers to be confident that the attachments

Craig produces will meet their specifications flawlessly.

The engineering department uses SolidWorks para-

metric modeling software which allows seamless

design updates to be automatically shared throughout

our full catalog. This ensures that our fabricators and

welders receive the most recent design refinements at

their workstation terminals keeping the entire plant up-

to-date instantly. Three dimensional modeling allows

our designers the most flexibility possible when help-

ing our customers. Providing 3D models for approval

before moving forward with production, information

sharing allows all parties concerned to be up-to-date,

on-track, and on-schedule.

The engineering

department

ensures that all

designs are
