  • Planning a lab for creative education

Planning your creative lab starts with deciding which Wacom product(s) best suit your teaching needs, how many products are required, where you will set up the products, and how the products will be used, managed and supported.

    Step 1: Questions to consider

What creative programs are you teaching and what software applications will you use?All Wacom products work with Mac, PC and Linux and support for our pen and touch functionality is integrated with most leading creative software applications, such as Adobe, Autodesk, Corel, Pixologic and Toon Boom, so you can easily integrate Wacom products into your existing IT infrastructure. The skills you are teaching are important factors in product selection. For example:

    • Are you teaching illustration where working directlyon screen with high-resolution displays may beimportant?

    • If transportation design or video editing are subjects, the largest screen sizes may be beneficial.

    • For photography, Wacom’s highest color performancedisplays may be critical.

    • Are your students working in 3D applicationsthat may benefit from the Wacom Pro Pen 3Dfunctionality?

How and where will Wacom products will be used? Will you be using products in a lab setting?

    • Will products be stationary in a traditional lab? Willthey need to be moved between classrooms? Howmuch desk space will be available for the new pendisplays or pen tablets?

How many different creative classes and students will need access to Wacom products at the same time?

    • It is important to understand the number and sizeof the classes that will be using the equipmentsimultaneously. You should also consider your near-term growth objectives.

How many students will need to access Wacom products to complete their out-of-class projects and assignments? Do you have a program in place that requires students to purchase their own equipment or will they need to complete all their assignments during open lab time?

    • Open lab hours: Consider how many students willneed access to labs and the hours the labs need tobe open for your students to complete their out-of-class assignments.

    • Consider a student “Check Out” program to provideadditional access to Wacom products and ensurestudents have equal opportunities to learn on thesetools and create professional-quality assignmentsand portfolios.

    • Student-owned devices: Many schools are nowpurchasing Wacom devices for students or requiringstudents to purchase mobile computers. Will yourschool require creative students to have a Wacom pentablet to use outside of the classroom or require themto purchase a laptop device for doing creative work?

Do you need a Wacom tablet or display, or are you interested in all-in-one solutions? Wacom also provides a mobile all-in-one solution, Wacom MobileStudio Pro. • InstallationOnce your new Wacom products have been purchased it is time to setup your lab space and get your devices ready to run your new Wacom products. The basic installation process is easy for those who are familiar with setting up displays and input devices.

Setting up your lab spaceOne of the most important considerations in setting up your lab is how the products will be positioned on the desk or table relative to other devices i.e. secondary displays and/or the computer you are using. Follow the best practices below for how to position your new Wacom devices.

Wacom Cintiq Pro – Because your students will be working with the pen directly on the screen of the Cintiq Pro they will want to adjust their position in relation to the display as well as the angle of the display. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you mount the Cintiq Pro on one of Wacom’s accessory stands or arms made specially for the product and for creative use. The Wacom Ergo Stand allows for easy adjustment of the angle of the display and allows the display to rotate freely. The smaller Wacom Cintiq Pro 13 and 16 have their own style of accessory stand that allows for easy adjustment.

Wacom Intuos Pro – Artists normally prefer their display directly in front of them and their Intuos Pro tablet slightly off center toward their natural “pen hand” in this way that can create with their pen, while using their non-dominant hand to activate shortcut keys and modifiers assigned to the ExpressKeys or on a USB or wireless keyboard.

Wacom Mobile Studio Pro – The versatility of MobileStudio Pro allows you to use in a lab setting, for student check-out, or for instructors to walk around the classroom. The low-profile 3-position stand (included) easily attaches to the back and allows for easy adjustment of working angles. If the MobileStudio Pro will be used in multiple classroom locations it is recommend to purchase a laptop cart that can be used to secure and charge the devices. You should plan on having a USB or wireless keyboard when used in a lab setting.

To help reduce glare on displays it is helpful to have a way to lower light levels in the classroom and cover windows.

It is important to make sure your Wacom products are secured. All Wacom products come with a built-in security slot. All Wacom Cintiq Pro and Mobile Studio Pro products have a Kensington lock slot built in. Kensington offers a variety of lock types so choose the one that best meets your school’s security needs.

    • Wacom Cintiq Pro 24/32 –Kensington® Lock Slot

    • Wacom Cintiq Pro 13/16 –Kensington® MiniSaver™ Mobile Lock Slot

    • Wacom MobileStudio Pro 13/16 – Kensington®MiniSaver™ Mobile Lock Slot

    • Wacom Intuos Pro (all models) –Lock slot for tether or security cable

    • Wacom Cintiq 16/22-Kensington® Lock Port

If you have purchased Wacom Cintiq displays you will need a power outlet for each display.

The Wacom Intuos Pro does not require a power outlet. It connects and charges by connecting a USB port on your computer. All Wacom Intuos Pro models feature Bluetooth so can be connected wirelessly.

It is always a good idea to connect your technology to voltage controllers to prevent damage.

Installing Wacom products After your lab space is set up, it's time to get your new Wacom products up and running by installing the latest Wacom driver. All drivers can be downloaded from the Wacom Support website.

It is important to regularly check for new driver updates and checking for updates should be the first thing you do if you experience issues with your Wacom device.

Many Wacom products come with the Wacom ExpressKey Remote or built in ExpressKeys and Touch Rings. Additionally, Wacom now has an on-screen radial menu tool and on-screen keypad. All ExpressKeys can be configured and customized for each unique software application. Wacom ExpressKeys and remotes are user configurable in the Wacom driver.

The Wacom ExpressKey Remote is paired to a specific device so it must be used with the device it is paired with. It is recommended to label the ExpressKey Remote and the Wacom device it is paired with.

Wacom pens are not device specific and can be used on any Wacom device in your lab or classroom that is compatible with that generation pen. See the Lab Management section below for more information on managing pens in the classroom and pen compatibility with different Wacom devices.

Lab ManagementOnce your lab is set up or you have your devices ready for student checkout, there are a few final things to consider:

Managing Wacom pens:All Wacom pens are wireless, which is great for the creative process but can result in pens disappearing in a lab environment. Most schools implement a process to put the responsibility of the pen on the student.

There are two common ways that schools manage their pen inventory:

    1. Require students to check out a pen with theirstudent ID and return the ID at the end of class whenthey return the pen.

    2. Require students to purchase their own pens and bringthem to each class or to the lab during open hours.

Device checkout:Many schools are now purchasing Wacom devices that can be checked out by students allowing them to work outside of class or dedicated lab hours. If you are implementing a check out program it is important to develop a device check out process. It is helpful to purchase a case for each product where you can include all pens, cables and chargers that go with each device. Be sure all necessary pens and accessories are with the product at time of check out and when they are returned.

Accessories and replacement parts:It is always a good idea to keep extra pens, nibs, cables and chargers on hand. All pens, nibs and accessories, including cables, chargers and cases, can be purchased through the Wacom e-store.

    Wacom eStore

Repairs and warranties:Wacom products have a long reputation of reliability but sometimes they will need service or repair. In the event your product needs to be repaired, whether or not it is still under warranty, you can start the repair or service process by contacting Wacom support.

Contact a Wacom Specialist to see if our Extended Warranty and Services program for education is available in your region.

Pen compatibility with older Wacom products:All new Wacom pro products feature the new Wacom Pro Pen 2. This new technology provides 4x more sensitivity, 4x more accuracy, no parallax, virtually no lag and improved tilt support. The new Pro Pen 2 only works on new Wacom Pro products and new Wacom Cintiq 16 and 22, but will not work with older products. Some older models of pens will work on new Wacom Pro products but will not deliver the same performance as the Pro Pen 2. It is recommended that you use the pen model thatoriginally came with your product.

If you have a mix of old and new product in your labs it is recommended that you label or tag pens accordingly to avoid any compatibility issues.

Please reference the following pen compatibility table or contact Wacom Support if you have any questions.
