Frequently asked questions

Where will my child go to school next year (2015-16)? What options does he/she have?

For students living within the Greater Park Hill/Stapleton Shared Boundary (GPHS), there are five schools serving 6th through 8th grade. Your child is guaranteed a spot at one of the five schools: Denver Discovery School, DSST: Conservatory Green, DSST: Stapleton Middle School, McAuliffe International School or William “Bill” Roberts.

Families who reside in the GPHS Shared Boundary should complete and submit a DPS SchoolChoice form by 4 p.m. on January 30, 2015. On this form, you may rate all five of the GPHS Shared Boundary schools and/or any DPS school, including those in other regions. Based on the school preferences you indicate on this form, your child will be awarded a seat at his/her highest-preference school with space availability.

How can I get a spot in our preferred school?

It is very important to think about what program(s) you want for your child and indicate your true preference(s) on the SchoolChoice Form. This will give you the best chance to get the program you desire. Your completed SchoolChoice form must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on January 30, 2015. Paper forms are available in this packet, at all DPS schools and can also be downloaded at http://schoolchoice.dpsk12.org. The paper form can be returned to any DPS school or DPS Enrollment Center. When submitted, please be sure to get a date-stamped copy of your form.

The online SchoolChoice form will be available through a DPS Parent Portal Account. To create a Parent Portal account or obtain more details, please visit https://myportal.dpsk12.org.

When and how will I be notified of my child’s school enrollment for the 2015-16 school year?

Notification of 2015-16 school year assignment and/or waitlist information will be sent in early March 2015. If your child is not enrolled at your first-preference school, he/she will be waitlisted at any school that was ranked higher than the school of enrollment.

What if my child does not get his/her first-preference school?

If your child is enrolled at a school other than the one you have indicated as your first preference school, his/her name will be placed on a waitlist for that school, as well as any others ranked higher than the school assigned. When and if space becomes available, the school will contact you to see if you would like to accept a seat in their program. This may happen at any time between March and December 2015.

How will my child get to school next year?

Please see the following page detailing transportation.

What if I do not submit a SchoolChoice form for my student?

Any GPHS resident with an incoming 6th-grader who does not submit a form (paper or online) by 4 p.m. on January 30, 2015 will be assigned to a school by DPS Choice and Enrollment Services. Students will be enrolled at one of the five GPHS boundary schools based on space availability.

Transportation

How Transportation Will Work:

› Transportation will be provided in accordance to district policy EEAA.

› Students must live within the Greater Park Hill/Stapleton shared boundary and attend a middle school option within that boundary.

› Students who reside more than 2.5 miles from their school of attendance will access transportation at their closest middle school within the shared boundary or, potentially, a community-based stop.

› Students who live less than 2.5 miles from their school of attendance within the shared boundary will not be provided transportation.

› Students who do not reside in Greater Park Hill/Stapleton, but wish to utilize transportation, may apply for a transportation exception that is approved based on current bus stop and space availability.

This is applicable to all DPS students who are entering grades 6, 7 or 8 and attending the following schools within the Greater Park Hill/Stapleton Middle School shared boundary:

› Denver Discovery School

› DSST: Conservatory Green Middle School

› DSST: Stapleton Middle School

› McAuliffe International School

› William “Bill” Roberts ECE-8

Please Note: DPS Transportation will determine the need for additional community-based bus stops. If additional stops are needed, details will be communicated online at http://transportation.dpsk12.org, in the Parent Portal and in letters mailed home in spring 2015.

Other Helpful Information:

Nearly all families in the shared boundary are within 2.5 miles of pick-up locations.

+Pass: Discover More Opportunities Knowing when and where a student gets on and off the school bus is important. With +Pass, the DPS student ridership system that became available in 2013, schools and parents now have easy, real-time access to this information. Parents can call contact their student’s school, or access ridership information via the Parent Portal. All transportation-eligible students in DPS who ride a yellow school bus are expected to use their +Pass. For more information, contact your school or visit http://transportation.dpsk12.org.
