August, 2020 Dear Craig School Families, First and Foremost, I hope each of you and your family are safe and well, despite the challenging circumstances our communities , state and country continue facing due to COVID-19. With the start of school comes more uncertainty and questions, but one thing remains constant, Craig’s commitment to providing the learning opportunities that enable our students to thrive. You have all received detailed information on our reentry plan from our new Head of School, Dr. Kara A. Loftin. So many of your questions have already been answered. Therefore, I would like this letter to focus on the positive changes in The Craig School program that have developed this summer. Every department has revamped their goals and objectives so they are “Parent Friendly.” In the past so many of you have mentioned that you were unsure what the expectations for achievement were for your child. Why do we have two pages of objectives and what does the code for mastery really mean? We know the goals we are looking for your child to achieve and we need to make sure that clarity is apparent to you. If objectives are clearly defined it becomes much easier for parents to partner with us to help our students to attain their yearly goals. I am looking forward to your feedback when we have our first parent/teacher conference and I am confident that it will be positive. There is always a silver lining in each dark cloud and COVID has encouraged the embarkment of 1 to 1 Devices for all of our Craig students. With that said we have begun teacher training in all of the promising new GOOGLE extensions for the students. Our two Technology Integration Specialists, Mrs. Given and Mrs. Rosky have been diligently at work preparing takeaway ideas that can be incorporated or modified into any subject area. A full teacher in-service will be provided September 1 st and a few but certainly not all of our takeaways such as Screencastify and Flipgrid will be introduced. We will also be fine tuning Google Classroom postings so there is more uniformity in the posting and less confusion for our parents. Lastly, we have focused on technology, cognizant of the key part this will play in the up-coming school year. Our Technology Integration Specialists have created numerous resources for our staff. They will continue the technology learning opportunities for teachers and parents. Please save the date for Parent Information so that we can share our knowledge and ideas with all of you. Last year the staff committed to a two-day training on the integration of Project Read - Framing Your Thoughts and Project Read – Report Form, uniting non-fiction reading and writing. Every student, reader or not would start to learn the reading and writing connection. All teachers would be utilizing the same brainstorming skills to facilitate pre-writing as well as the paragraph/essay model. The goal would be that the students would learn study skills while developing good writing habits. Last year we committed to a half an hour of daily instruction for the first three months of school. After that point the Project Read- Report Form / Framing Your Thoughts was integrated into the classrooms. The same

Dear Craig School Families, First and Foremost, I hope each of you and your family are safe and well, despite the challenging circumstances our communities , state and country continue facing due to COVID-19. Therefore, I would like this letter to focus on the positive changes in The Craig School program that have developed this summer. plan for instruction will be in place for this year. Grades two through sixth will revisit the beginning parts of the program. All new students will receive the beginning course. For the rest of our seventh and eighth graders after a quick review, they will move right into using the paragraph writing planning sheets to organize the various types of text structure. This will help their reading comprehension and solidify their use for writing. Parent Information will be a platform for all of you to gain a greater understanding of the school wide approach to the reading / writing connection. We are very excited to announce Craig’s Leadership partnership with Montclair State University. Mrs. Given has been working diligently over the past year to create a collaborative program with MSU. Leadership Council students will be paired with a Montclair State University mentor majoring or minoring in leadership at MSU. They will meet with the leaders on Zoom four times in the year. Each session will have a specific agenda. Our goal is to have Craig leaders learn more about their strengths and weaknesses as leaders and how they can further develop their skills. This new program will be in addition to the work that Leadership Council typically does. Craig will also have an intern from MSU who will work remotely with Mrs. Given during the fall term. This intern comes to Craig with a wealth of skills and background in Leadership. We welcome her and look forward to her service to The Craig School. We are hopeful that our rising 7th and 8th grade students will take advantage of participating in our Leadership Program. The Craig School has committed to the Mind Up – mindfulness learning program for the past two years. Joyful engagement isn’t incidental, it’s essential and it is our job to enhance our student’s ability to learn with as little stress as possible. This school year especially we understand the importance of teaching our students simple tools for self-awareness and self-management. Our clinicians will be providing the staff with an in-service prior to the first day of school on helping our students cope with changes resulting from COVID 19. Teaching students’ positive preventive measures, talking with them about their fears and giving them a sense of some control can help to reduce anxiety. We want to make sure all of our staff offer a unified language and support for the students. We realize children react to and follow our reactions. They will learn from our example. Besides the weekly mindfulness classes, our clinicians are prepared to offer individual support whenever necessary. The students’ sense of safety and well-being continues to be paramount. From the Craig sports center: If soccer season is compromised, get your running shoes ready. Mr. Furlong is preparing for an alternate fall sport – Cross Country. What a wonderful way to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors. Be on the lookout for information closer to the start of school. As I close I want to make mention that my goal in writing this letter is not to downplay the importance of safety during these unprecedented times. We have been diligently working on different models of learning for the upcoming school year. The overall success of this school year will require each of us to work closely together, listening to one another’s concerns and doing our part to contribute to a positive, healthy, and safe school experience. Sincerely,

Janet M. Cozine

Lower/Middle School Supply List 2020-2021

The Craig School provides students with binders that are a part of our school wide organizational system.

Please have your child bring the following items on the first day of school: • Pencils • Extra eraser tops • Ear buds / Head phones • Highlighters: orange, blue, purple, yellow • Cloth face masks • Face shields (optional) • Colored Pencils (10 pk)

Must have for home: Ruler (centimeter & inches) Calculators for 7th & 8th grade – Texas Instrument #15 or Math Explorer

Please note: We ask that children NOT bring in any toys, trading cards, fidget spinners, hand-held electronic games, etc. unless otherwise notified. We find these items very distracting to our children in the classroom.

All students will be provided a locker near their homeroom, where they can store their backpacks, lunch and coats. We do not use locks on our lockers.

Electronic Devices/Cell Phones: When students arrive at school their cell phone MUST remain in their backpacks. Once they arrive at homeroom, faculty will ask students to place cell phones or other electronic devices not being used for academic learning in a designated place. The homeroom teachers at the end of the day will return all devices to students before dismissal. If a student is arriving late to school they can turn their phone in to their homeroom teacher before the start of their arrival day.

Students are not permitted to text others or call using their electronic devices during the academic day-including calls to parents and guardians. Students may only place phone calls to parents/guardians from the social clinician’s office or the nurse’s office.
