Plainfield’s trail system encompasses over
20 miles of pathways and sidewalks to allow
residents and visitors to travel through Plainfield on foot or bicycle safely.
Franklin Park – Plainfield’s oldest park was founded in 1935 at the corner of Mill St and Lincoln St on the north end of town. Named for Charles “Sap” Franklin, the town’s first marshal, the park encompasses 35 acres, and like Friendship Gardens and Hummel Park, is located along White Lick Creek. Because of its age, Franklin Park boasts many mature shade trees. Amenities in Franklin Park include a shelter house, lighted tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and lighted ball diamonds. Many of Plainfield’s youth league baseball programs are played on the ball diamonds at Franklin Park.
Friendship Gardens – Friendship Gardens is unique among Plainfield’s park system. Where other parks are activity-oriented, Friendship Gardens is contemplation-oriented. The 13-acre garden features a stone waterfall, beautiful landscaping, a Veterans’ Memorial and the three-room Gazebo Pavilion, which is the centerpiece of the park. The Gazebo Pavilion may be rented for celebrations like weddings, graduations, anniversaries and family reunions. For more information about this park and how to reserve the Gazebo Pavilion, please call the Parks office at 839-7665.
Swinford Park – Located at the corner of South Center and Longfellow Lane, Swinford Park was founded in 1968 and encompasses
25 acres. Swinford Park was named for Carlos “Red” Swinford, the town’s first fire chief. Amenities at Swinford include playground equipment, lighted ball diamonds and a shelter house. The Plainfield Girls Softball Association plays its games at Swinford Park.
Robert M. Ward Park – Bob Ward Park estabilished in 2008 encompasses one acre at the corner of North and East Streets. It includes open green spaces, park benches, a gazebo and connects to the Plainfield Park Trail System.
Interurban Depot – The Interurban Depot is a perfect display of town history. This facility can be used for small rentals and receptions and can host up to 75 guests. The Depot is available to Not for Profit Organizations at no cost.
Al and Jan Barker Sports Complex – This complex features soccer fields, baseball fields, and football fields to allow children of all ages the opportunity to participate in youth sports. The complex is the home of the Plainfield Optimist Club youth sports programs and various departmental programs and special events. It includes fifteen soccer fields, two football fields and 5 baseball fields. One of the baseball fields will receive a multiuse surface to provide programs for children and adults needing walking assisted devices.

TRAIL OVERVIEW
PARKS OVERVIEWPlainfield currently has 540 acres of park property and trails for residents and visitors. The basic structuring is a linear park system extending along White Lick Creek. This concept incorporates several park facilities into a cohesive system that takes advantage of the opportunity to utilize undevelopable portions of the floodway for a productive public purpose. Currently, Hummel Park, Anderson Park, Swinford Park, Friendship Gardens and Al and Jan Barker Youth Sporting Complex are all located in or adjacent to the White Lick Creek and are all linked by approximately 4 miles of bicycle/pedestrian path.
Anderson Park – The seven acres is home to the Plainfield Skate Park. Named after Frank Anderson, a 27 year park employee and foreman, the park is located along South Center Street just west of Swinford Park. Anderson Park features a picnic shelter as well as bench seating that can be used for sunning. It is connected to Swinford Park by a walkway that crosses South Center Street and to Hummel Park via a walkway that winds south along South Center St. The Plainfield Skate Park operates the week of April 1st through October 31st annually. The Skate Park offers a variety of ramps, rails and boxes for skateboards, rollerblades and bikes. The park is free and has designated use time for children and youth. It is supervised at all times by “Skateguards” who are trained in first aid and CPR. Helmets are required at all times for the safety of all users.
Community Gardens – The community garden gives residents the opportunity to have their own garden without using their back yard. 20 foot by 20 foot plots are located at The Center Community Church on County Road 700 East.
