Beyond 4-H he has also been a tireless volunteer in many other avenues including the Sheridan Municipal Advisory Council, the Placer County Fairgrounds Revitalization Committee, the Junior Livestock Association and Harvest Church in Wheatland. Bastien is one of those unsung heroes who quietly and tirelessly volunteers and we are so lucky to have him in our community! Q: Can you tell us how you became involved with 4-H and the Junior Livestock Association (JLA)? A:Years ago when I had recently been divorced and was dating a gal who had a young daughter, we were searching for good extracurricular programs to get her involved with and 4-H was a great fit for her. That is where my journey with the Placer County 4-H began. I've been helping kids with various small animal projects and I have been a rabbit project leader for 28 years now. I have also served 25 years as a poultry project leader and 12 years as cavies project leader, which is guinea pigs. I joined the JLA several years ago and have held board positions there as well as being a 4-H Small Animal Superintendent for 25 years. Q: You've been doing this a long time, what has been the most rewarding aspect of working with the youth on their livestock projects? A:Working with kids and helping them find a good path has been the most rewarding. Because my career was at the California Medical Prison in Vacaville, I saw the other side of life and it made me realize how important it is to try and keep these young people out of the prisons. 4-H teaches them lifelong skills, gives them confidence, keeps them busy and focused and really instills a sense of purpose in their life. The lessons taught through raising livestock help these youths become productive members of society and that is so important! Q: What piece of advice would you give someone just getting started with 4-H or the JLA? A:Find your passion and enjoy what you are doing, learn from your mistakes and grow from it! Q: Finally, why should someone go to the Placer County Fair and the JLA Livestock Auction this year? A:The Placer County Fair is a wonderful display of the diversity we have in Placer County. There are so many talented youths and adults, seeing all the still exhibits and livestock is great! The Junior Livestock Auction is a wonderful way to support the youth who have worked so hard all year long. We are so thankful to all the businesses and people that do come out every year to support the JLA because they are investing and contributing to the education of today's youth-the adults of tomorrow! ...In the Lincoln FFA Alumni Chili Cook-Off!! Witten by Thermalands 4-H Reporter: Alecia Ebbitt On May 1st, 2019 the Lincoln FFA Alumni hosted their annual chili cook-off. The event was from 5pm-7pm at the Lincoln High School Farm. The chili cook-off is to raise money for the Lincoln FFA Scholarship program. There were many attendees and contestants. We sent out the flyers for our 4-H Club. We set up and decorated our booth. Each contestant made and brought 3 crockpots of chili. Each attendee paid for a ticket and received a bowl for each contestant’s chili. The attendee tasted all the chili and picked their winner by putting a ticket in the chili exhibitor’s basket. The money the attendees paid went to the scholarship fund. Our group worked hard on our chili and created the recipe. We started with a simple base recipe and added ingredients until it tasted really good. We took notes along the way of what we were adding. Our favorite part was winning second place. But we also liked talking to the attendees and handing out the chili. Next year we will make a few small changes to our recipe from the recommendations from this year. We would like to thanks Charlie and Jessica Armistead of the Lincoln FFA Alumni for contacting us about this Chili Cook-off. The Thermalands 4-H Members in attendance were: Maddie Wiswill, Walter Wiswell, Brooke Ebbitt, Alecia Ebbitt, Hunter Ebbitt and Krista Shaw.
