A utosomal Dominant PolycysticKidney Disease (ADPKD) is themost common, life-threatening

single-gene disease. It affects over 500,000individuals in the United States and 12million worldwide. This disease is thefourth leading cause of kidney failure inthe United States.ADPKD does not discriminate based on

gender, race, ethnicity or geography.People with a family history of ADPKDand younger people who develop highblood pressure may be diagnosed withADPKD.In ADPKD, kidneys enlarge with age

because they contain many cysts or fluid-filled sacs. Over time these cysts grow insize and in number and lead to kidneyfailure in about half of ADPKD patients.Medical evaluation is available and

consists of blood and urine tests, ultrasound or kidney MRI, and sometimesgenetic testing.

What is Autosomal DominantPolycystic Kidney Disease(ADPKD)?In this disease cysts develop inside the kidneys.

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs whichgrow in size and numbers and

eventually impairnormal kidneyfunctions. As thecysts grow, thekidneys enlarge in

size. Over time, this causeskidney failure in about half ofall ADPKD patients.

Who should be checked forADPKD?• Individuals with a family history ofADPKD

• Younger people whodevelop high bloodpressure

• When a test is done foranother reason, and cystsare found in the kidneys

How is ADPKDtreated?Currently, there is no established treatmentto reverse or slow the progression ofADPKD, but testing of new therapies isunderway.• The only available treatment for kidneyfailure from ADPKD is dialysis.

• The only available cure is kidneytransplantation.

• Close monitoring by a Nephrologist isvery important.

What are the symptoms ofADPKD?There are usually no symptoms early in thedisease. Individuals that do not progress tokidney failure may never feel any symptoms.Others may have:• High blood pressure (Hypertension) – themost common problem that begins earlyin the disease course

• Blood in the urine (Hematuria)• Chronic back or flank pain

• Acute pain – this may relate to a kidneyinfection, stone, or cyst rupture

• Urinary tract infection (UTI)• Cyst infection – this may present as feverand pain without showing up as aninfection on urinalysis and urine culture

• Kidney stone (Nephrolithiasis)

How can NYU Medical Centerhelp an ADPKD patient? At New York University (NYU) MedicalCenter our medical experts are highlyexperienced in treating ADPKD and itscomplications, as well as providing dialysisand transplants to patients with Kidneyfailure. We also guide patients to importantclinical trials. NYU researchers are at thecutting edge of investigative science indeveloping potential therapies for ADPKD.The doctors at NYU Medical Center areexperts in treatment of hypertension, prevention of heart disease, management ofanemia and bone health – all of which areessential to the health of an ADPKDpatient. Our Chronic Kidney Disease Staff isknowledgeable and helps patientsdeal with kidney insufficiencyand to prepare some patientsfor dialysis.NYU’s Transplantationteam provides thoroughpre- and post-transplantcare.
