Pixel Detector System (Barrel & Forward)

• Beam pipe bake out insertion/removal of pixel detector

• Supply tube: power, cooling & optical links

AOH & DOH boards

FPIX

BPIX

• Installation BPIX & FPIX in July 2008 few days each !

• FPIX removal and reinsertion in Spring 09 was fast !

New 4 Layer Pixel System should exploit potential new beam pipe!

however, stay compatible with present beam pipe! Worm gear

Tolerances for insertion are mm ! any new detector must stay within exact mechanical dimensions

Page 6: Pixel Upgrade Phase I CMS Upgrade Week 27. April 2010 R. Horisberger, PSI

Present BPIX System Central beam pipe section has:

• cylindrical Beryllium pipe length = +/- 180cm

rinner=29mm , twall = 800m

• conical stainless stell section = 4.6

Tolerance budget during insertion is critical issue

Layer Radius 1 44mm 2 73mm 3 102mm

Clearance in end-position ~ 7.5mm

Inner shield ri = 37.3mm

Beam pipe router = 29.8mm

Inner shield rinner = 37.3mm

Displacement (observed)

4.3mm

10.7mm

Beam displaced ~2mm asymmetric to pipe!

Why ? We have no idea !

BPIX Upgrade Baseline (2015) 1216 modules (1.6 x present BPIX)

(present)

Keep present tolerances need R=25mm pipe

Worm Gear Adjustment of BPIX

• For next pixel detector needs position adjustable ball bearing rollers

• Compensate for deviations of beam pipe to tracker mechanics (pixel rails)

• Close detector in final position around actual beam pipe position

• Propose to use worm gear mechanics (remote adjustement ) for closing half shells around beam pipe.

Mechanical Pilot-Detector for Measurement

• Propose worm-gear adjustable mechanical Pilot Detector

• Just prior to installation perform measurement and adjustment to actual position
