Pitra pakSha is the 15 days of dark half of themonth ofbhaadrapada (normally in september). These 15 days are al-lotted to ourdeparted an estors. Water libations with bla k sesame (with kusha grassif available)is o�ered to ea h of the departed soul.TarpaNa (o�ering of water) is done by sitting fa -ing South (dire tion),holding a pin h of bla k sesame seeds (if avail-able) on the right palm,pour wateron them and let the water ow in the spa e be-tween the thumb and thefore �nger of right hand into a tray or plate (tilt the right handpalm towardsright so that the water ows out, wet-ting the sesame seeds, thru thespa e between thumb and fore�nger)1. tarpaNam is o�ered by eldest surviving mem-ber or one whosefather has died; female an give tarpaNam.2. The relationship given below is that of the de- eased and notliving ones.3. After bath and usual puja for Gods, sit fa -ing south.4. Items required are, a few teaspoon-ful of bla k sesame seeds,water or thirtha, with milk or owers gandha of-fered to lord, kushagrass if available.5. Hold all items in right palm and start pouring wa-ter from left

hand on to right palm to allow wa-ter to ow thru right palm, betweenright thumb and right fore�nger.6. The number of times at the end of the mantra shows the numberof times the mantra to be hanted and num-ber of times the libation tobe poured.7. Where wife is alive, avoid using the word 'sapat-niikam'.
