Detail of a monogram from the tenth century Book of Deer

This year the Art Extraordinary Gallery features the illuminated art by a tenth century monk who was an artist/scribe for the Book of Deer. The exhibition contrasts his depiction of saints, angels and decoration with that of the Books of Lindisfarne, Durrow and Kells. His art captures his unique vision of the gospel text, unfettered by repetitive elaborate embellishment. We also invite viewers to open the doors of a porch full of angels and to see a reconstruction of the iridescent shell walls of a Hebridean croft house. Also showing new contemporary art extraordinary.

POSSIBLY the most exciting thing to happen in West Lothian since Susan Boyle’s meteoric rise to fame has been the opening of the Jupiter Artland sculpture garden. Since Robert and Nicky Wilson bought Bonnington House near East Calder some ten years ago they have put together an impressive collection of contemporary sculpture. Dotting the landscape of the 80-acre estate can be found works by internationally renowned artists including Anish Kapoor, Anthony Gormley, Cornelia Parker, Charles Jencks, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Mark Quinn among them. The couple are serious collectors of contemporary art. Nicky Wilson, an artist herself, was influenced by the late Ian Hamilton Finlay’s creation Little Sparta, located in the Pentland Hills around thirty miles or so away from Bonnington House. Unsurprisingly, the combination of their surroundings, passion for collecting leading contemporary works of sculpture and a desire to provide artists with an inspiring setting led to the creation of Jupiter Artland. The sculpture garden opened a year ago, on May 15, 2009 (during a full moon) when a firework display designed

by Cornelia Parker showered the landscape with moon-rock dust. Parker has also spent time at Jupiter Artland as artist in residence and is said to be planning an “exciting and unnerving” proposal for future work there. This is all good news for contemporary sculpture in Scotland although the arrival of the sculpture park in the area has been fairly low key. Nevertheless, works such as Jencks’s Life Mounds, which celebrate the cell as the basis of

life, Suck by Anish Kapoor, a mind-bending structure combining a hole with walls and a 17 ft high cage and Marc Quinn’s Triffid-like 12 metre high orchid Love Bomb

demonstrate that West Lothian is now on the map as a location for world-class contemporary art. The even better news is that this is an ongoing project, which is set to grow and evolve over the years. Jupiter Artland is committed to educational activities and events, which means that local schoolchildren (and those from farther afield) should benefit from encountering the stimulating work on show, much of it commissioned and constructed in situ. The sculpture garden opens for the 2010 season on May 14. Jupiter Artland is a changing landscape, which is sure to beckon people to visit and enjoy. Drawing – and thinking about it Bill Cadenhead was an accomplished painter of the Angus landscape, but he was quite a thinker too, as a newly published book, A Philosophy of Drawing, makes clear. Richard Carr reports

BACK IN 2005 I reviewed an exhibition of work by William (Bill to his friends) Cadenhead at The Meffan in Forfar that was supposed to be a retrospective. Sadly it turned into a memorial. What the exhibition revealed was that Bill was much more than a painter of the Angus landscape – though this he did brilliantly using oils, pastels, gouache and other media in a way that revealed his love of light and endowed his images with human feeling. From the exhibition, it was clear that he was also a very accomplished portraitist and, in terms of media, an equally accomplished printmaker and sculptor. And, to those who knew him, he was an enthusiastic countryman and a wonderful and entertaining friend. Now a book, A Philosophy of Drawing, has been published which he prepared before his death. It concentrates on drawing the life figure – a subject he taught at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee from 1971. He had graduated from its School of Drawing & Painting in 1955 before attending Hospitalfield in Arbroath and the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he won a travelling scholarship to Europe before returning to his alma mater. But, as Dr Sandra McNeil makes clear in her Introduction, although the book demonstrates Bill’s desire to hand on his experience in life drawing to future generations – he was one of the last to experience an education steeped in a particular type of academic rigour that went back to the Renaissance – the book is not a standard primer nor does it address some of the issues of today, especially the withdrawal of life drawing in many art schools. This was a development that began in the 1970s, when photography suddenly became important, but was not one that was taken up in Dundee. Nor does Bill take up the kind of political issues that bedevil the teaching of drawing, especially the debate around the proposition that Western art has a cultural paradigm that ignorantly or deliberately

replicates racist and sexual values. Instead, his book is a meditation on drawing a line and on the experience of drawing itself. Dr McNeil says the book is particularly useful in the life room because its writing is like a conversation between the teacher and his pupil, an exploration of visual thinking that emphasises the need to think as well as to draw. Indeed, as Bill says in his conclusion, “Drawing is a studied series of facts about form. It is an interpretation, not a copy.” Bill begins with the assertion that the centre of form belongs to structures and that surface belongs to surface. From this introduction, he divides his book into 10 sections, beginning with Silhouette and going through Transparency & Axes, Thought Processes, Perspective, Planes, Contours, Tone, and Anatomy. Along the way, he has many interesting observations to make, such as that there are dangers in silhouettes that ignore what lies in between, that drawing the body requires a kind of navigation so that one can find one’s way around space, using as many axes as are necessary to analyse the structures (eg where joints occur) and the relationships between them. When it comes to thought processes, he describes how to hold a pencil, how to express passages where movement is slow or fast, or where the flesh is hard or soft, and the possibility of beginning with mass and then drawing a line around it. Then, in the section on perspective, he describes the ‘science of sight’ and matters such as working from eye level from which comes the picture plane and the drawing’s vanishing point. “The Theory of Perspective should be employed as an aid and not as a hard and fast rule. As such, its concept should be kept as simple as possible.” And, he adds, the artist should use his pencil at arm’s length to ‘sight size’, and note the transparency and space around the figure. When it comes to

working with planes, this helps to slow down the seemingly impossible process of drawing a figure and gain control of the work while, when it comes to contours and their speed and rhythm, Bill compares their use to skiing down a mountain side, where you can either ‘choose a direct passage or a more interesting slalom course.’ And then, when it comes to tone, Bill gives advice on how to prepare a pencil to create broader areas of tone, as well as the use of charcoal to create hard or soft lines to convey the proximity of the figure to the viewer. His last section deals with anatomy, where knowledge should be used as an aid, not as a tool. Nevertheless, the detailed analysis of the anatomy of different parts of the body shows that his own knowledge is exhaustive. As he says, “Drawing is about the understanding of how structure exists physically in terms of its relationship to space… and how structures are aligned to each other by articulation and the relationship of their parts.” Finally, the book is illustrated by his own drawings which he selected from 46 notebooks and were not drawn specifically for the book. They demonstrate his mastery of the human form. A Philosophy of Drawing is published by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee, price £ 12.99. Fine prints of William Cadenhead’s paintings of Glen Clova can be obtained from V A Cadenhead, The Rowans, Muir of Lownie, Forfar DD8 2LJ.

Bring back the Hydro

ONCE UPON a time, the way in which to add distinction to a par-ticular landscape and hence make it memorable (and encourage people to visit) was to stick a statue of a local grandee on top of a column (or build a folly), while in urban ar-eas the general practice was to put up a statue of a general or a gover-nor from some far-flung part of the British Empire on his horse. Alternatively, Queen Victoria could be shown on her throne, or some nineteenth century man of importance (a statesman, perhaps, or a prominent industrialist) strid-ing purposefully towards the future. However, today there seem to be two new approaches: either build an iconic building, as Dundee plans to do in the case of the out-post of the Victoria & Albert Mu-seum overlooking the River Tay, or create a giant statue such as Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North out-side Gateshead. But such a project can become too expensive. Hence the rejection of another proposal by Gormley – a 390ft nude sculpture of himself cre-ated out of box-like steel sections with a lift and staircase inside the legs and a viewing platform in his head. Instead, the commission for a statue to mark the 2012 Olympic Games has gone to Anish Kapoor. His design is of a tangled knot of red steel costing £19m (as against £40m for Gormley’s design) which some critics have already described as ‘a mangled roller-coaster,’ ‘a mutant trombone’ and ‘the Godzilla of public art.’

But there is a third option, which is to create a special kind of landscape. In Scotland, this has already been done by Charles Jencks in the grounds of the Gal-lery of Modern Art in Edinburgh and now he is to repeat the ex-ercise (but with a different de-sign) in the grounds of a former coalmine in Fife – a site that can be seen from the M90 motorway. The idea of the sculpture that will sit in a 269ha park is to commemorate the Scottish diaspora and the impact that 40m Scots have had on the rest of the world. Thus there will be four stepped mounds up to 30m high that represent different parts of the world: oval for Canada and the US, circular for Europe, horn-shaped for India and China, and triangular for Australia and New Zealand. There will also be a loch in the shape of Scotland and a second lake with huge cliffs. The earthworks will be completed by planting and maze-like monu-ments created out of the site’s mining past: huge boulders, scrap metal and tyres. Jencks says he is enjoying the challenge of transformation and necessity – he is aiming to transform necessity into art. The project is due to be completed in 2012 when it is sure to demonstrate that there are other ways to draw attention to a particular place than by putting up sculptures or adding to the list of the world’s iconic buildings.

BACK IN THE 90S, the columns of this paper echoed to the shrill protest of the STORM campaign to fight the privatisation of the railways – and the destruction of gems of the Scottish network like the Fort William sleeper and the rusting Forth Bridge. We caused a few waves and have the doubtful pleasure of being able to say quite a bit of ‘we told you so’ as Britain has sunk to the bottom of the pile for its third world rail system Want to hear the bad news? You are going to have to put up with more whingeing. What is it this time? Energy – and so-called green energy in particular. We can do this, of course, be-cause you, our long suffering readers and advertisers, allow (maybe en-courage?) it and we have never, ever had any truck with so-called funding agencies, be they Arts Councils, Enterprise bodies (!) or even Creative Scotlands – whatever they are sup-posed to be or do. The acronym STORM stood for STOp this Railway Madness. The madness was breaking up the exisit-ing system into hundreds of separate disjointed pieces, selling off assets for firesale prices, destroying the pool of skills and ending up with a virtually unworkable system. With energy much of the dam-age has already been done. Assets have been sold off for a fraction of their value and are now owned by a

ragbag of international wheelers and dealers who milk them for all they can yield with little or no thought for the future. Take the North of Scotland Hydro Board, that shining example of practical socialist initiative that did so much for the development of the Highlands through the inspitation of the great Tom Johnson. Sold off, as with the railways, to satisfy free market dogma. Unbelievably, to profit from the mad subsidy regime now in place to "encourage" green generation many of the Hydro's visionary schemes are being "modernised" to take advantage of the crazy handouts on offer. So hydro stations that previously generated 40 or 50 megawatts of highly flexible green power – unlike wind power available on demand – are being downgraded to below the magic figure of 20 megawatts on which the renewable subsidies (ROCs) are paid. Scotland loses some of the most valuable and reliable renew-able energy, an insane regime of subsidies lasting through till 2037 burdens our creaking economy and a whole lot of speculators grow fat at our expense. So what do we do about it? Bring back the Hydro – and give it the social remit it once had.

BEYOND THE PLAN is the title of an exhibition at the Park Gallery in Falkirk's Callendar Park during the month of May. His work has been described as taking the form of “a dialogue with modernism and New Town architecture.” Rae, a native of Falkirk who now lives and also teaches part time in Edinburgh, says: “I am interested in the history of post-war architecture in Scotland and the melancholy of a modernist tradition that never flourished. My research and work explore the fictional creations, places and public sculptures that transgress the imaginary border between art, architecture and landscape.”

THE PIER Arts Centre in Stromness has an exhibition by the Orcadian artist Steven MacIver during May. Entitled Latitude, the exhibition reflects MacIver's reactions to a journey round the world broadly on the latitude N41 with a focus on sporting home grounds. As well as many celebrated major venues it also took him to a lot of lesser places. Indeed, as he put it, these often provided more interest: “Although my intention was to investigate the role of the home ground within the community, what I actually found more interesting, and what formed the basis for the majority of the work, was the subtle pockets of ‘game space’ I came across within the urban environment.” Latitude is at the Pier until June 5. THE CAMPAIGN to breathe artistic life into the redundant fire station in Dunfermline has won the backing of the installation artist David Mach, who has expressed strong support for the idea. Project Arts Dunfermline, the pressure group promoting the idea (see ArtWork 160), quotes Mach as saying: “The building is fantastic; it would make a great art centre and its location is brilliant. I am fully supportive of this”.

CONTEMPORARY SCOTTISH ART

UNTIL 17TH JULY

TRATHEARN THE

YOU COULD say that Scotland is full of anomalies, since it’s a country of clans and trade unions, of empty mountains and the crowded central belt, of sentimental tourist goods and cutting edge universities, and of the anomalies none is stranger than Harris tweed. Set up by Catherine Murray, Countess of Dunmore in the 1840s to create a sustainable local industry on the Isle of Harris, today Harris tweed is actually woven in a mill in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. And while most textile companies have to contend with competition wherever it comes from, Harris tweed is protected by its Orb symbol which was trademarked by the Harris Tweed Association in 1909 when the cloth was defined as ‘hand-spun, hand-woven and dyed by the crofters and cottars in the Outer Hebrides.’ Today, the cloth is protected by the Harris Tweed Authority under an Act of Parliament passed in 1993 that describes the cloth as ‘hand woven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the islands of Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra and their several purtenances (the Outer Hebrides) and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.’ It has also survived the various inheritance taxes that have eroded the Scottish estates that used Harris tweed to clothe both their lairds and their ghillies, and the arrival of Gore-Tex that provided a cheaper and sleeker way of defying the elements. Most recently of all, it has survived the arrival of a man called Brian Haggas who bought Kenneth Mackenzie Ltd (KM Group) in Stornoway in 2006 when the company accounted for 95% of Harris tweed production. Haggas reduced the 8000 odd Harris tweed designs to four, refusing to sell the cloth to anyone else and using it for his own exclusive garment collection. People in the know prophesied disaster, and indeed it was not long after his purchase that, having cut his workforce from 100 to 15 and reputedly being left holding many thousands of unsold Harris tweed jackets, Haggas appeared to give up on the venture and retreated to Yorkshire. However, despite this episode that threatened to put an end to Harris tweed,

rescue came in the form of the former UK government minister, Brian Wilson, his friend, oil trader Ian Taylor, and the former Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Morrison. Together, they formed a new company, Harris Tweed Hebrides, and re-opened the disused mill at Shawbost on the Isle of Lewis which had been left out of the Haggas sale.

It now supplies many of the customers who were cut off by Haggas and, last year, produced around 95% of Harris tweed. The rest is produced by Harris Tweed Textiles based in Carloway on the Isle of Lewis and by a few one-weaver businesses. Along with the need to revitalise the Harris tweed industry has also come the need to re-invent its use, with the result that Harris tweed has been put into the Alfa Romeo MiTo sports car (it used to be specified for Rolls Royce interiors) and featured in Nike retro trainers and Clarks’ tweed desert boot

and a knee-length ladies’ boot. The cloth is also used for the Harris tweed holdall by the Healthy Back Bag Co, as well as in interior design. In the late 1960s, the biggest customer was the QE2 which was built on the Clyde; today, Harris tweed has been used in the conversion of the former Royal Scottish Automobile Club in Glasgow into the city’s new 5-star hotel, Blythswood Square. Harris tweed has also retained its position on the cat-walk that goes back at least to its use by Vivienne Westwood (whose logo closely resembles the Harris orb) in the 1990s. Notable among fashion designers to use the cloth are the late Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Steven Alan and Sara Berman, while Margaret Darling, wife of Alasdair Darling, was responsible for Harris tweed shawls being given as gifts to the wives of the G20 statesmen who were in London last year. Last year was also when Harris Tweed Hebrides received two major honours: Textile Brand of the Year 2009 at the Scottish Fashion Awards and Outstanding Style Achievement at the Scottish Style Awards. Finally, Harris tweed has also benefited from its use in fiction and tv programmes. Robert Langdon in the novels Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol wears Harris tweed, as does Miss Marple and Jasper Fforde’s character, Harris Tweed, in his Thursday Next series. And, most recently of all, Matt Smith, the 11th Dr Who, will wear Harris tweed jackets in the forthcoming series of Dr Who. News of his choice of clothing has already led to an upsurge in interest. It seems that there is still plenty of life in Harris tweed!

FOR THOSE familiar with the Edin-burgh art circuit, Richard and Florence Ingleby represent the pinnacle of Caledo-nian cool. Owners of one of the capital’s smartest galleries, their move two years ago from cosy, Georgian town-house to Calton Road, a vast premises a stone’s throw from Waverley station, has done nothing to puncture their fragrant reputa-tion. Their position of grace can be attrib-uted to a number of factors. Each has a thorough grounding in the art world or publicity. Before settling in Edinburgh Scottish-born Richard was the art critic for The Independent and Florence was once publicity director for Bloomsbury publishing. Artists’ names are star-studded if not cherry-picked. Grand Old Men, How-ard Hodgkin and Ian Hamilton Finlay lend the gallery gravitas. The Inglebys have had a long association with Finlay, whose estate they now represent. They also handle books, pamphlets and post-cards from his Wild Hawthorn Press. Undoubtedly the duo gives the nod to Scottish contemporary art. Callum Innes, 2009 Turner Prize winner Richard Wright and Alison Watt OBE all hang their work on Ingleby walls. “We’re in Scotland so of course we work with Scottish artists but never set out to specialise in Scottish art.” Several shows at Calton Road focus on European and American work and at present the New York-based Sean Scully’s triptych (on the theme of Iona) is displayed in the main gallery space. “It’s important to bring work into Scotland so that Scottish artists may be viewed in a wider context. I don’t think it’s interesting for our own artists to be seen purely in a Scottish context.” Under their umbrella the Inglebys encourage oldies to rub shoulders with the young.

“Like an unconventional family when success comes for one end it supports the work of the other.” However, it is the young like Peter Liversidge and Richard Forster whose work is beginning to take off who are the most time-consuming for the Inglebys in eff ort and energy. Another reason for the couple’s high-fl ying image is their frequent art fair vis-its. “If we sat in Edinburgh waiting for people to come we would have quickly gone out of business. We must go to art fairs whether they’re in London, Amer-ica, Europe, Hong Kong or Australia so we can off er Scottish art and bring back international art.” Once the clammy Venue, a night-club, the Calton Road’s exhibition space measures 6,000 square feet, laying claims to being the largest private gallery out-side London. “Not that size matters, but in terms of ambition, we have a world-class space and any artist can come here and make the most wonderful exhibition.” Although the gallery’s glass exterior still sparkles, its solid, wooden fl oors re-main good as new and the present show is of world-class standard, the Ingleby enterprise has had it tough recently. After ten years in Royal Terrace with limited space the pair wanted to up the ante leaving on a high note with a show by Richard Wright (one of whose pieces was later nominated for the Turner Prize). But July 2008 was the wrong time to move. While the art market blipped, the Ingleby costs rose. “We rescued this semi-derelict build-ing in the heart of the city and made it into a fantastic place at no cost to any-one but ourselves; now our rates are ris-ing by quite a large amount.” Oops, this sounds familiar; didn’t Ian

Hamilton Finlay address a similar com-plaint in 1983 when he and wife Sue fought Strathclyde Regional Council over increased rates after converting a ruined byre at their Lanarkshire home? For the Inglebys it’s not just a matter of upgrading but about size. “If you own a gallery you need space which means higher rates. But if you’re an asset management company in a small offi ce in Charlotte Square you

don’t pay any.”

While they appreciate nominal sums awarded them from the SAC for their art fair stands (costing them £50,000 to take part), the Inglebys feel they’d benefi t more from a risk-managed fund. “If a gallery needs help, not to make money but to cover the risk of taking an artist abroad, a pay-back method would be better where more risks are covered and more money from successful out-comes was repaid.” Clearly, balancing the books is much more of a headache than previously. When asked if they had a buff er of family money, the answer was emphatic: “Our income comes completely from selling art. We receive no private fund-ing.” Inevitably, there’s been a scaling down. They still stage six exhibitions a year, but small shows on street level for up-and-coming artists have been tempo-rarily ditched. Can this golden couple survive? “Yes, it’s diffi cult but we are making sense of it… .just about. A big part of what we’re doing is growing a market here.” The Inglebys could have based their business in art-savvy New York, Paris or Ber-lin, but they chose Edinburgh instead whose public gal-leries now promote some fantastic visu-al art programmes. As for the private, there has been a convincing upturn in the past decade. Whereas once the moder-ately moneyed might have toddled off to Sotheby’s to buy a traditional painting, now they are much more likely to head for the Ingleby Gallery opposite Waverley station’s platform 2. The train now standing.....

INTERESTED by an advertisement for a public art seminar with Jonathan Banks from the Ixia public art think tank, I took myself along to Howden Park Centre in Livingston. Advised to book in advance, I picked up a ticket on the afternoon of the event. Could the fact that I got ticket number five have provided a clue as to how well attended the seminar was going to be? Basically, there was myself and a mother and daughter who were interested in public art mainly (I think) because they had done a stint on Anthony Gormley’s plinth in Trafalgar Square. The remainder of the audience was made up of four of the West Lothian Council arts services team. Jonathan Banks, who hails from Bir-mingham, went ahead anyway to deliver his presentation, which was in fact interesting and informative. However, although he encouraged input from the miniscule audience, the feeling was rather one of being lectured to. There was little sense of real discussion of the issues and Mr Banks seemed to be of the opinion that most of the thinking should be carried out on his side of the think tank. To be fair, though, proper discussion was near impossible due to the pathetic turn out of people. The council representatives sat there du-tifully but contributed little enthusiasm and/or interest to what should have been a stimulating debate. And it should have been because there are certainly controversies regarding public art, as Mr Banks’s presentation pointed out. The woman with daughter declared that she was all for public art and if the council saw fit to install a piece in the community then everyone should be eternally grateful. Thinking this was a rather badly thought out ideology I wanted to respond but had the feeling that responding would be like trying to start an argu-ment in an empty house.

The lack of interest in public art in the area, as testified by the poor turn out, leads one to question the logic behind staging such an event in the first place. Ixia evidently provide a thought-provoking and intelligent forum for de-bate and examination of public art in the com-munity. They do exactly what they say on the tin by “providing an independent and objective view of all the factors that affect the quality of artists’ work in public spaces.”. So what is the problem? It would seem that some responsibility has to lie with the council department responsible for the arts. Surely it is their job to rally interest and support for public art (in fact for all aspects of visual art) in the community? After a short break in the proceedings for refreshments, the mother and daughter and one council employee did not return, leaving Mr Banks to deliver the concluding section of his presentation to a very select audience – of just four. West Lothian Council make much of their commitment to public art projects and have just recently handed out £90,300 worth of funding grants for the Grassroots public art scheme. This scheme aims to regenerate four different areas in the county by improving the environ-ment through public art initiatives. This leads one to ask where were the recipients of these grants? You might have though they of all people might have had a passing interest in what someone from a public art think tank had to say? Considering that a substantial sum of public money has been spent and jobs for artists have been created it might have seemed reasonable to expect some of the people involved to at least show up.

I WOULD like to write a few short words to anyone thinking of making a pass at their secretary. Actually it’s only one. Don’t. Let me tell you a tale about a pal of mine who did just that recently and who ended up on U tube in the nude in her bed. His name is Rafi q Huseini and at this moment you think you are not going to be so vulgar as look him up on the web, but you will, trust me you will. My initial conversation with Rafi q concerned my own fat belly, a subject that seems to interest my family and friends far more than my political opinions or literary pecadillos. Mr Husseini, who I sat beside at a wedding in Bethlehem, shares, as any of you who have already done the web search will know, this problem and after I had refused his off er of some pudding due to my protuberance he confessed that he too was having trouble getting rid of his own stomach and would be missing out on the afters as well. This led to a good hour long conversation on various diets. Carbs, grazing, dairy products, oats, we covered them all and then just as he was leaving he lent forward and said that he had enjoyed our chat so much that he was prepared to take the day off work to show me around East Jerusalem. Very kind says I, and what is it you do for a trade? He looked at me dumfounded for a few seconds before revealing that his trade was that he was Rafi q Husseini the chief of staff to President Abbas and therefore one of the most powerful fi gures in the current Middle East confl ict. Now this was not a good moment. For over an hour this bumbling investigative journalist had sat next door to one of the most interesting characters on the scene

and discussed, well fl atulence mostly. How did I respond? Naturally I was suddenly fascinated by his hugely generous off er of a bit of a tour. I would buy the soft drinks, the hard drinks, holy Moses I would pick up the tab for a charter helicopter if that was his thing. Well I didn’t really say that but you get the picture. And then Mr Husseini’s trouser problem came into play. It was only a few days after our meeting that I opened the paper to fi nd that my man Husseni had been exposed on the internet in, well you have read the details. It seems oh, quel surprise, that one of the secretaries who had answered an ad to work for him had allegedly suggested that they continue the conversation back at her fl at had, prepare to be amazed, been working for either Mossad or one of its derivatives in that snake pit that is the world of Middle East politics. Couple of points. First, I really liked Rafi q Husseini. I have met a good few Palestinian politicians and few of them match him for sheer, well likeability, (and indeed sound dietary advice. I’ve lost eight pounds since our talk). If he was a candidate at the forthcoming General Election he would get my vote no matter what the party. Should he be forgiven? Raise the right hand anyone out there who hasn’t made an arse of themselves through lust… I see no hands. Let he who is without sin, or indeed just trying to do a bit of sinning, cast the fi rst stone. Second and fi nal point. Don’t make passes at your secretary.

ArtWork does not make a habit of plugging individual artists in its pages, but sometimes the temptation is irresistible. The e-mail came from a Mr Ronald Ssekyanzi in Uganda. His claim:

“Whatever you can mention in art I believe I can do.” Go for it, Ronald.
