Pam FlahertyCover Artist

Pam is an active award-winning member of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association and Gallery. Her solo show “Hollins, Horses, and

Hanji” opens with a reception on Nov. 4 from 4-6pm at Fort Myers Beach Art Association and Gallery, 3030 Shell Mound Blvd., Fort Myers Beach. The

show will continue until Nov. 16. See www.fortmyersbeachart.com for more information. Part of the show (Hollins) combines visual works with fragments of poetry written during a challenging last semester prior to achieving her undergraduate degree. Some works combine horse images, poetry fragments, Golden medium, glass medium, charcoal, rusted paper and artist quality acrylic paints on canvas. She also includes the use of hanji (Korean) paper, which she discovered over two years ago while visiting her daughter in Korea. The paper has wide uses in Korea. Although the “Treasures of Fort Myers Beach” is a playful depiction of Estero Island, it reflects Pam’s appreciation for the community where she lives and works. Most of her work stems from a sense of inner exploration and play. Her works might allude to images but invite the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the work.

HAPPY HOUREVERY DAY 3-6 P.M.

Avast ye, mateys! Dig out your swords and sashes, pet parrots, eye-patches and swashbuckling hats for the 12th annual “Pirate Fest” hosted by the Greater Fort My-ers Beach Chamber of Commerce. It will be Friday, October 6, in the Times Square area from 6 to 10 p.m., and Saturday & Sunday, October 7 & 8, at various locations along Old San Carlos Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s event, however, will have a more simplified format than in years past, due to Hurricane Irma striking The Sun-shine State on September 10. In fact, for a few hours the week after the storm, it looked like the “Pirate Fest” would be one of her vic-tims as well, until a group of local businesses saved it, though with a modified schedule due to Irma’s after-effects. “Hurricane Irma did not significantly impact just Southwest Floridians,” said Jacki Liszak, the Chamber’s executive director, in explaining the initial decision to cancel. “Most Floridians spent a great deal of money the week leading up to Irma for hurricane prepa-ration, expended funds for cleanup and resto-ration afterwards, and many basically lost two weeks of business income, so it just did not seem like many people had much disposable income for things like the Pirate Fest.” Once word got out, though, “we received immediate support,” Jacki related.

“The tipping point back was when five busi-nesses – Nervous Nellie’s, Pete’s Timeout, Shipwreck Motel, Smokin’ Oyster Brewery and Yucatan Beach Stand – stepped up with actual ideas and solutions. Suddenly a modi-

fied ‘Pirate Fest’ was not only possible, but we can host it without an admission charge this year, without breaking your bankbook!” As for what is cut, “We will not have the pirate ship battle,” Jacki

sadly said, “because so many of the big ships require repair from Irma, along with damage to the docks. We also do not yet know how many of the distinctive professional ‘Pirates’ can attend, as many of them are Floridians who have damage to their homes.” Most aspects of a traditional Pirate Fest remain. “We have roughly 40 vendors,” she explained. “There will be live music, but the main stage will be in the Yucatan Beach Stand parking lot. We have the staging area for children’s activities on 3rd Street and Old San Carlos Boulevard, the Kid’s Fishing Con-test, and the Gaelic Band in Times Square on Friday and Saturday evenings. We are orga-

nizing the ‘Pirate Pub Crawl’ for Friday night, though that may just be in the Times Square area.” There will be leather patches to provide discounts for sale at all “Pirate Fest” bars and restaurants, at the Chamber and on its website for $20; see www.fmbpiratefest.com for the full schedule as dates draw near.

“While we are thrilled to host a smaller ‘Pirate Fest’ this year,” concluded Jacki, “we are al-ready planning for the 2018 show to be bigger and better than ever, closing Old San Carlos from Times Square all the way down!”

Yes, yes I already hear the comments of “darn rats with fluffy tails, they do nothing but destroy my bird-feeder and cause headaches.” Now it’s true squirrels are actually in the rodent family so I can’t negate the rat portion of that state-ment. However, the Eastern Grey Squirrel does do good for the environ-ment. As squirrels bury acorns, they distribute tree species around forests and increase biodiversity in their eco-systems. A single gray squirrel cre-ates several thousand buried caches of food each season, called scatter hoarding, not all of which it can redis-cover. Squirrels are an important prey species for many birds of prey and other mammals; if you can believe it, I’ve even seen Bald Eagles catch and eat Grey Squirrels! Eastern Grey Squirrels are well versed in food storage strat-egies. Preferred foods include bark, berries, seeds, acorns, fungus and

occasionally insects. They have been known to harvest tree sap when nor-mal food supplies are low, and can tell the difference between red and white oak acorns and store them separately. Whites sprout quickly, almost as soon as they hit the ground, and the squir-rels tend to eat them immediately to get as much nutrition as possible from the seed. Red oak seeds don’t sprout

until spring, so squirrels use them for winter storage. A 1996 study in the jour-nal “Animal Behavior” observed some squirrels biting through the embryo inside of white oak acorns, to stop it from sprouting. These bitten-through seeds were then buried alongside red acorns for winter eating. Scientists also witnessed squirrels unburying red oak acorns they didn’t eat over the winter, biting out their embryos, and re-burying them for later. As much as the Eastern Grey Squirrel helps the environment, due to its fantastic ability to live in al-most any condition and eat just about anything, they have the reputation as a pest in inopportune places. Their natural range is over the eastern United States to just west of the Mis-sissippi River and north to Canada. Introductions of this species occurred in the western states and portions of Canada that they did not previously

inhabit, as well as in Italy, Scotland, England and Ireland. The squirrels live well in urban environments; combined with a lack of natural forces to keep the squirrel numbers at bay, these ar-eas have population booms, causing harm to the native squirrels and other species that have the same food re-sources as the Eastern Grey Squirrel. They can produce 3 to 4 babies twice a year that can lead to large popula-tion spikes if given successive years of good food production. Historically, there have been reports of extensive migrations of squirrels due to low food supplies. An extensive migration of gray squirrels in Connecticut occurred in 1933, when 1,000 or more swam across the Connecticut River between Hartford and Essex, most likely be-cause of the result of a limited food supply.

“I make a living doing what I love, so I am blessed,” says local musician Obe Gonzalez! “But Southwest Florida is a long way from where I began!” Obe grew up in New York City before relocating here in 2005: “A lot of my family played music so it was always a part of my life, but I am actually the only one still doing it. When I first moved down, I didn’t do much musically the first 3 or 4 years, until I got a feel for the scene and decided the time was right for me. Since then I progressed one step at a time, and am lucky I’ve play steadily now for the past 7 years” When discussing his favorite music, Obe is flexible. “Coming from the New York atmosphere, I prefer to play more original stuff, but you must appeal to the Florida entertainment scene, meaning you must know a little of everything.” As for his most requested songs, “people want Top 40-type material, no matter from what era; really songs they love from the radio. Since I play a lot of restaurants and resorts, audiences like the classics like The Beatles and Nirvana, and that is OK with me.” After playing in bands for years, Obe relishes being a solo artist. “A main reason I stopped working in bands is because of the late nights where you play from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., as I have two kids now. I am also a little tone deaf, from too many screaming guitars and banging

drums, plus all the bar smoke was getting to me. It is difficult to get everyone together to sound better, and that bothered me. I am a firm believer in pushing myself, as it is essential to learn new songs every week, as you never know what will work unless you try it.” Obe specializes not only in restaurants and resorts, but family parties “where I am that corner guy, and this is a great niche for me and pretty awesome, where I set up in the house or by the pool and play. I am that musician at the wedding or graduation, Christmas or birthday party, so I appreciate that people think of me for their most important occasions.” When not being “The Corner Guy,” “I do two Wednesdays-a-month at The Beached Whale, so those are October 11 & 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. In Cape Coral, I am at Donte’s Coal-fired Pizza Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., and at Cork Soakers Deck & Wine Bar the third Friday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. Every Saturday I am at The Sanibel Inn tiki bar from 1 to 5 p.m., and the fourth Friday each month at The World of Beer at the Gulf Coast Center from 8 p.m. to Midnight.” Obe can be contacted at 239-770-4422, [email protected] or on FaceBook at soundsofobe.

Jennifer Semro, the Artist of the Month at The Fort Myers Beach Public Library for October and November, had no intention of becoming a professional photographer. “I was one of those people who took a simple camera and did ‘point-and-shoot,’” said the native of Elmhurst, Illinois, 20 miles west of Chicago. “That was pretty much it, but even then, I found photography fascinating.”

It intrigued her enough that Jennifer, roughly seven years ago, took classes from the Ritz Camera Centers in Naples, “where Frank Berna, a professional, taught. I learned about the craft, and next thing you knew I acquired an advanced camera that I had no idea how to use so, so I took more classes, and that is how it all began. Before I got into this, I thought photographers just pointed the camera, but you must know about location and lighting and

backgrounds and all kinds of things, including patience, to get that one perfect shot!” She does all my own framing. “To me that is the biggest part of photography. Depending on how you frame and mat a photo, you can have the same shot look completely different in two or three settings. If you do not have a good frame, you do not have a good photograph.” When asked her favorite locations, Jennifer sighs: “Oh, Lord! I photographed the wild stallions at The Outer Banks so that has a soft spot in my heart. Key West was a great, and I just returned from a terrific trip to Chicago with three members of my photography club. The Bahamas, where I photographed wild spotted dolphins, stands out.” As for how she selects her destinations, “l am not a world traveler, and I don’t like to fly, so most are within driving distance. There are so many beautiful places, and I look forward to going back to where I already took photos, because there is always something you did not get the last time.” Jennifer does not specialize in any one genre: “I started out doing photos of people’s dogs and some cats, but now I branch out into many areas, including nature and Blues artists, as I love that music!” In addition to photography, Jennifer operates “Critter Sitters”: “That began in 1994, when my daughter on vacation needed someone to care for her two dogs, then to make a little extra money friends

brought me pets, and it evolved into a fulltime business.” To learn about Jennifer’s magnificent work, attend the “Meet the Artist” Reception on Wednesday, November 1, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. To contact Jennifer, call her at 239-947-8638, email at [email protected] or see her Facebook page.

To learn more about the Beach Library at 2755 Estero Boulevard, visit www.fmb.lib.fl.us or call 239-765-8162. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; closed Sunday and holidays including Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day and Thanksgiving.

“The ‘Coastal Ecology Walks’ hosted by the Mound House complement our weekly ‘Beach Walk’ each Tuesday from here at 9 a.m.,” explained Environmental Education Coordinator Dexter Norris from Newton Park. “While the ‘Beach Walk’ offers great general information, often people want something more, especially nature geeks like me! This is a wonderful way to acquire a lot more local knowledge as quickly as possible.” The next Coastal Ecology Walk will be offered on Thursday, October 26, at 9 a.m.; it

is free to Mound House members and $5 to all others, with one-hour paid parking necessary. Our September walk was just 11 days after Hurricane Irma, and her impact was evident almost from our first step. Previous events from Newton Park allowed us to walk from the adjacent tiki hut right down to the beach, but Irma eroded about two feet of sand to reveal a previously almost-covered seawall, meaning we took the stairs that were previously half-covered as well! “I guess I should not be surprised,” offered Dexter, who was clearly surprised, “as the beach changes all the time.”

Wildlife abounds near the lowtide line. Dexter pointed out Sandwich terns “that have yellow at the end of their beaks – think of it as they have mustard at the end of their nose from making a sandwich – these suggestions are goofy sometimes, but they work!” We see Reddish egrets, “who are very patient. A favorite trick is to extend their wings while perfectly still, offering shade for a prey, and once they come underneath, the egret strikes!” The group encounters

Snowy egrets, willets and gulls, who Dexter describes as “dirty rotten scoundrels! They are such thieves – they land on a pelican’s head, then reach into their mouth to steal a snack.” The group uncovers a perfect sand dollar that Dexter wets down for two purposes: “to clean it, but more important, to see if it were still alive. If you find a live one, gently put it back in the water.” We experience Spider crabs “that are spooky-looking but relatively benign. They keep food on a spier on their back – the original doggie bag!” He finds small Red and Black mangroves “that are baby trees floating around, looking for a place to call home. Mangroves are the

‘Secret Service Protection’ for our coastal town.” Newton Park is located at 4650 Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach. The park offers picnic tables, restrooms and parking. The Newton House located at the park, hosts yoga classes twice a week on Tuesdays afternoon and Wednesday morning. The Mound House, Estero Island’s oldest structure now owned by the Town of Fort Myers Beach and restored to its 1921 grandeur, is the community’s cultural and environmental learning center. It offers over 50 programs in October, including nine new ones. Mound House admission is $10 for ages 13 & up, $8 for students with IDs, $5 ages 6 to 12, and 5 & under free, with Town residents receiving a 50% discount. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Mound House is at 451 Connecticut Street, with additional parking at 216 Connecticut. For information call 239-765-0865 or see www.moundhouse.org.

HOROSCOPESResearch asst: Java Jo

GENERAL COMMENTS: October is probably the most spiritual month of the year. Culminating in All Hallows Eve, or All Saints Eve - the origins of which go back to the Celtic harvest festivals (no doubt overseen by the Druids), and remembrances of the dead, especially the Saints (hence ‘hallows’) and martyrs … oh yeah, and all the faithfully departed. And zom-bies. You’ve got to have some zombies. And voodoo dolls too. And, of course, pumpkin everything. So, let’s spice it up and see what the Voodoo Queen has in store for us this month. Hope it’s not too spooky!

LIBRA (SEPT 23 - OCT 23)There will be a lot of flying in your sleep this month. Can’t be helped. The way your planets are aligned you will be washed with the essence of Casper, the Friendly Ghost. Sorry, it can’t be helped. You’re friendly and personable to everybody. So is Casper. Little known fact - before Casper went to work at Famous Studios and became a movie star, he lived as Saint Gaspare Bertoni (he Americanized his first name when he arrived in Hollywood). One troubling item: he was big into stigmata. Avoid mirrors.

SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 21)Crazy atmospheric, temperature conflicts will play havoc with the con-densational bodies of air. Because it’s cooler now you may see some misting or even fog. No worries, right? Wrong! Spirits come out this month, and use the mist as camouflage. Pay close attention to your peripheral vision. You can see them out of the corner of your eye. Just remember - you don’t believe in ghosts. You’re just “seeing things.” Yeah, right.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)Ever walked through the town at 3-4:00 am? Everybody’s asleep, their thoughts in La-La Land. It’s almost like the air is clean of angsty vibra-tions. A very magical time, is it not? As you walk through the empty town, fascinated by the quietness, keep in mind that you are not alone. There are nocturnal creatures about. Don’t worry though; this is their time to hide in the shadows. They don’t like being stared at. Nobody even notices them during the daylight! If you see them at night just leave them alone. They’re where they’re supposed to be. Remember? Yin Yang?

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)Occasionally you may find yourself thinking, “I’m getting pretty sick and tired of the subject of dirty water.” Sometimes we forget that, in the grand scheme of things, there are also such things as Aqua Man, the Loch Ness monster, the Creature from the Deep Lagoon, and, worse of all, the Skunk Ape of the Everglades. With all the flooding we’ve experienced recently, it’s like a huge expansion of their living environ-ment. Meaning they’re now closer than you think. Only kidding!

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)Ever notice how many feral cats live on the island? This island being near a lesser magnetic pole, draws them here like a beacon of catnip. The colors Orange and Black are strongly affiliated with magic (big duh here) and it’s interesting to note how many black and orange cats there are. What I mean is, they’re cats - they’re just plain weird. What does this have to do with your horoscope? I think it’s just to draw your attention to something you didn’t have your attention on at all. Like that idiotic song that repeatedly plays in your head.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) Ever been to a Zombie Jamboree? A Day of the Dead festival? Neither have I, but thanks to Internet media we have access to all the voodoo parties you could ever want. It’s funny because we run from death every day of our lives, except for one day when we celebrate it. Kinda reminds you of the 4th of July a bit, if you think about it. One day when everyone comes together for the same reason. Hey, if you’re into past-lives why not future-lives too? Who cares who I was - who am I going to be?

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)Aren’t you the feisty one! Just like a black cat you like to be in the middle of everything, nosing around, looking for an opening. Nothing escapes your attentive eye. Toast too burnt? You know it. Coffee too weak? Yeah, you got it. Socks not white enough? Saw it. Your com-passion knows no bounds. Your disdain is even bigger. You’ll keep the floods away, the thunder at a low volume, but the rest of the time you’ll be on the back lanai in a lounger taking a well-deserved nap.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)Anyone who knows you knows that you’re an “old soul”, like you’ve known each other for centuries. Because of this subliminal connection to the rise and fall of civilizations throughout time, you’re in no hurry to jump into anything - especially swords and spears! Still no matter what’s going on around you, there you’ll be right in the middle - as in the saying “between a rock and a hard place.” You’re the rock. And that’s cool - minimum effort for maximum gain. And you also know how to roll.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21)Knowing the Geminites like I do, All Hallows Eve definitely has a strong influence on you this month. Especially around the 26th. There should be a holiday on that day for all your minions to show their appreciation to you, giving thanks that you exist in their lives. Of course you’ll have to cook some kind of feast to bribe them. Luckily, they’ll feel so guilty they’ll clean up the aftermath. For the rest of the month look for lucky voodoo charms. It’s got nothing to do with any holiday or sign or any-thing. They’ll just appear. Do with them as you will.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)You should find yourself somewhat magnanimously vague this month. Thoughts may come, and thoughts may go - like memories on a tele-phone wire, staring idly at the world, while other times just flying away. These moments usually happen in the early morning before your cof-fee. No worries, though - like a tourist on vacation, time will fly by just as quickly as your thoughts. In no time at all it’ll be November and suddenly it’ll all catch up to you in a new holiday whirlwind. So, for this month, just chill.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG. 22) Surprisingly enough, shoelaces play a big part in your life this month. Many of you who are into the New Age stuff know the importance of your feet to your well-being. Now it could mean you need to pay at-tention to the exact psi applied to your feet via your shoes laces, but it could also be something broader than that. Like, shoelaces on your astral body. What could that mean? Maybe use a bit of constraint on the foundation of your soul? I dunno - that sounds way too weird. Still, we wouldn’t want your astral soul just flying around willy-nilly, would we?

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEPT 22)Be careful not to walk on a leg that has fallen asleep this month. Es-pecially if it’s your own. Ever done that? Of course you have! It’s like nothing’s there, but it is. Makes you walk all funny and wobbly. Like a zombie. Think about it. A zombie’s whole body has fallen asleep. Well, they’re the dead, so it’s a real long sleep. And yet, like you walking on your leg that’s asleep, trying to get it to wake up, this is what zombies are doing - they’re trying to wake themselves up. Wouldn’t you? So, this month feel compassion for the poor, kindred zombies.

DISCLAIMER: Alright everybody. Take a breath. Calm down. I know it’s going to get real spooky this month. But relax, and rest assured I just made all this stuff up. I did, but remember my sign is Virgo, so did I really make it up? Or was I really channeling the undead? I guess I’ll never know. Anyway, just agree that I only made this up, and ghosts, zombies, vampires and spirits aren’t real. Ah … but the predictions are.
