PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN
We celebrated the 67th Republic Day of India,
on 26 Jan '16 on campus, with great zeal
and patriotic fervour. The day, began with the
hoisting of the Indian flag by our Principal, Mrs.
Girija Baiju, followed by the National Anthem.
Students saluted the National Flag and pledged
to uphold the honor, integrity, diversity and
uniqueness that completes “India”. To mark the
importance of this day, a grand celebration
was held in our school auditorium „Ram Manch‟.
The school echoed with a patriotic spirit as the
children performed.

Our Principal and Vice Principal addressed the stu-
dents and urged them to do their best to make their
Motherland proud. The school auditorium reverber-
ated with nationalism, as the school choir presented
a patriotic song. The students brought the stage
alive with their passion and love for motherland.
Besides songs and dances specially choreographed
for the occasion, we also witnessed great leaders
come alive on stage. It was followed by a beautiful
folk dance. The melodious music and graceful move-
ments of the dancers were spellbinding.
A wise man once said “the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you
learn, the more places you'll go.” And it is true - a reader does live a thousand lives before he
breathes his last. The man who never reads lives only one.
Chevron, with the goal to instill reading in students, organizes an annual readers‟ cup. The pre-
liminary round this year, was held in January 2016.
Each team consists of four members. Only two teams would get nominated from each school, un-
der each category. The participants are expected to read voraciously and this year the prescribed
books were:

The 28th Annual Principals Conference of the Council of
CBSE affiliated schools in the Gulf, was held in Muscat
from 20th to 23rd Jan '16. Around 125 Principals from
various schools in the Gulf attended the 4-day
conference. Sessions such as “ Excellence in Education”,
“ Leading a value based organization” and “Educational
Leadership” were not only enriching but also provided us
with the opportunity to share the best practices followed
in our schools. The speakers too, were encouraging
individuals who motivated us to think beyond the
horizon to explore the growth of oneself as well as the
institution.

four books prescribed for the prelims, along with an additional
two.
Every year, the 16 teams that get selected for the finals, meet in Dubai Intercontinental Hotel during the
month of March, during Emirates Airline Literature Festival. It is an occasion which gets graced by many au-
thors. This year too it will be a celebration to interact with the writers who have authored the aforementioned
books. A book fair will also be held.

Reading is perhaps the most important skill that a child needs
to develop, a skill which is crucial to success in school and later on in
life. PIRLS is an international assessment of reading comprehension
at the Fourth Grade, conducted every five years since 2001. PIRLS
2016 is the fourth assessment, providing trends in reading achieve-
ment over a 15–year period. Based on a comprehensive framework,
PIRLS provides international comparative data on how well children
read after four years of primary schooling.
PIRLS and E-PIRLS

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) will select, within each of the sampled schools, at least
one class from Grade 4. Such selected classes will participate in the assessment scheduled for
February '16. The administration of the PIRLS and E-PIRLS achievement test is divided into
two parts. For PIRLS, this coincides with the two parts of the achievement test booklets.

For ePIRLS, students are asked to complete two different assessment tasks, also called class projects.
Both parts of the achievement test have to be administered to students on the same day, with a short
break in between.
To benefit the department, a cascading session on PIRLS AND E-PIRLS was carried out early this
month.

ENGLISH - A LANGUAGE TO EXPLORE AND ENHANCE
The English Enhance Program, an initiative of the
Bhavans Bookers club, laid the platform to help
our administrative staff and members of the IT de-
partment to strengthen their skill in
spoken English.
A good command of the language enables us to
have strong soft skills. With this firm belief, the
Bhavan‟s Bookers Club launched The English
Enhancement Program for our office staff.
The first program for the administrative staff and
the IT team was planned and conducted by me, on
7th Jan '16. The one-hour workshop was predomi-
nantly an interactive session that incorporated vari-
ous fun filled activities. During one such activ-
ity, the participants had to move around the corridor
and report in a few sentences using the Pre-
sent Continuous form of tense. What the learners en-
joyed the most was the activity in which they had to
draw a picture of their choice and speak about it us-
ing the Simple Present form of tense. Through active participation and a sportive mind, the learners
exhibited great aptitude to better their English.

THE D-BAIT BOWL - A UNIT OF BHAVANS HAPPY BOOKERS CLUB
The training sessions for debate started on 14 Jan '16. With 26 children on roll, the club aims to fol-
low a series of consecutive steps in training the students prior to the actual debate training sessions
get going. In its first session the student members were given a brief introduction on the "WORLD
SCHOOL DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP". A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION on the key
elements of a debate tournament, was discussed. This was followed by a talk by the trainer, on the
steps in succession that would be strictly followed before the members enter the tournaments. At
this juncture Adithya Sathyanath of 6D shared his debating experience at a competition in Abu
Dhabi. There was also a discussion on the traditional style of debate where each participant, in alter-
nates, walked to the podium to give a speech for or against the topic. The votes of the audience for
and against the topic were considered along with the judge‟s decision to declare the winners. The
D-bait club opted for the WORLD SCHOOL DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP style for its challenging
tasks that would help its members to become well skilled in debating.

A video on the WSDC was shown, followed by a mock debate by 6 students, on the topic READING
SHOULD BE IMPOSED IN ORDER TO MAKE IT A HABIT. This was done to enable students
get a hang of the skill.
In the following two sessions, students researched in the computer lab, for facts and figures on the
topic ALL STUDENTS SHOULD DO CHORES. In these sessions the students were guided to read
through the resources available in the websites and make note of the points they felt essential. They
were also encouraged to look for research findings and statistical data to prepare for the speech either
for or against the topic that would be delivered by them in the next two sessions. At the end of the
session students shared their thoughts and research work.

C’ est Noël (It is Christmas)
