For the senior games that went ahead it certainly made for some interesting matches and would have kept the club laundry per- sonal very busy. The wins by the Vikings, Randwick and Te Aroha have kept the log jam at the top of the premier competition and with the match ups this week we could again see a new leader at the top. The Vikings lead the way in premier reserves still undefeated whilst St George are right inside the top 4 which is great to see. In the Senior First the top 6 have already been decided with 1 round to play and a new draw next week will see them break into Senior 1 st and Senior 2 nd for the remainder of the year. Good to see 2 new teams in Kapiti and Trentham right up there in the top 6. Well it sure is winter time in Wellywood as if you didn’t know. Rain all last week restricted fields to just 1 match for those that were open and unfortunately that impacted on all our junior grades and the Women’s. Vikings on top Porirua 22-Wainuiomata 18 A late try catapulted Porirua to the top of the table with a bruising 22-18 win over Wainuiomata at Wise Park on Saturday. Porirua kept their composure late in the game and benefited from Wainuiomata’s ill-discipline which saw them reduced to twelve men for the final ten minutes. Maa Patafilo was the hero for the visitors, sneaking over from dummy half with just minutes remaining. Heavy conditions resulted in a physical forward battle although there were flashes of brilliance, the best being when Porirua fullback Johnny Teleaga burst through the line and chipped ahead for winger Cain Kaleopa to score and setup a grandstand finish. Earlier, Wainuiomata captain Matt Everitt inspired his team, having a hand in all three Wainuiomata tries, scoring two and setting up the other as they led 18-12 going into the final quarter. Daniel Beswick

Randwick 42, Petone 0 A tactic to keep hounding the Petone defence on the left side paid off in big dividends as the Randwick Kingfishers gained one of their biggest wins over the Petone Panthers in recent years at Naenae Park. Randwick’s big forward pack outmuscled the Petone forwards and with better ball control in the trying conditions laid the platform. The first half was in sharp contrast to the second spell as Randwick put on three tries to lead 14-nil at the break, before opening the offence up to maximum effect with some fine play out wide with its wing Ted Sola reaping in two tries. The blue and gold defence was also equally as staunch and never allowed the Panthers to encroach over the line at any stage, even when they threatened to do so a few times early in the second half. As mightily as they tried, it was never going to be an easy game for the Panthers as they went in with four key players out, causing four reserve grade players to step up from the interchange bench and serve as rookies in trying overhead and ground conditions. Carey Clements

Page 5: Pio15th june

Te Aroha 18-University 10 Te Aroha fullback Jarrod Wilson had an outstanding game in the arm wrestle at Whakatiki St. The Eels led 12-10 at halftime and were the only scorers of the second half with a late converted try to wrap up the game. The University side were right in the match all the way with debutant back rower Chris Evans the standout player topping the tackle count and making powerful runs in the sticky mud. Peter Gubb was another of the Hunters top performers. The young Te Aroha side enjoyed the experience of player/coach Denzil Hokianga as he guided the team and kept their composure in trying conditions. Upper Hutt 26, St George 20 A converted try to the big Upper Hutt prop Ben Manu three minutes from fulltime finally allowed the Tigers to celebrate something in their 50th jubilee year with a pulsating win over the Dragons at the Cannons Creek ground. In very muddy conditions that was always going to serve as a leveller between the two sides, the clash as expected between the bottom two sides was close throughout, with St George having slightly the upper hand at halftime with a close 14-10 lead. The margin could and should have got bigger for the Dragons as Upper Hutt were down two players at the same time at one stage in the second half for players not using their arms in the tackle. However as much as St George tried to capitalise, Upper Hutt stood firm by conceding just one try during this period. One of those players sin binned was Manu, so in a way it was appropriate that he was able to redeem himself by scoring the match winning try when the scores were locked up at 20-all. Upper Hutt was well served in this game through some fine positional play by fullback Ben Henderson along with hard graft by standoff Conrad Simon and prop Costa Paea, while second-row James Foua starred for the Dragons with some fine committed offensive and defensive play. Upper Hutt Leadership Through League Festival

13CSL – Leadership through

League Programme

During the month of May, our Year 13 Community Sports and Leadership class took part in a programme organised by Wellington Rugby League. The programme ran for 5 weeks and required us to coach 6 different primary schools around Upper Hutt. For three weeks we travelled to Primary schools and coached up to 100 students at a time the basic skills of Flag League. At the end of the coaching programme we organised and ran a tournament for 12 teams. The tournament went very well and our whole class really enjoyed the experience. I personally enjoyed the League course and learnt a lot from it, including how to be an Event Manager. On behalf of my class, I would like to thank Wellington Rugby League for making it all possible. Holly Rausch

Last week saw the end of the Leadership

Through League Program out at Upper Hutt

College, the program came to a close with the

students hosting a 3 and half hour tournament

which was won by St. Joseph’s school in extra

time over Oxford Crescent School. Over the

entire program the Upper Hutt College

students held high standards of coaching &

professionalism that did them, and their school

proud. They ran the festival very well, which

seemed to be enjoyed by all who attended and

participated. The Primary schools that took part

in the program were; St Joseph’s, Oxford

Crescent, Upper Hutt, Trentham, Birchville and

Totara Park.

Aotea College Year 12’s – Leadership through League Review Last week saw the conclusion of Aotea College’s Year 12 Leadership through League (LTL)program. LTL is a flexible program and can be delivered in various formats. The difference with this program was that instead of coaching Primary School students the college students coached students from Year 9 from their own college. With only 3 years difference in ages this proved a completely different dynamic. The College coaches had to be on the ball from right from the beginning otherwise they could lose the respect of the year 9 students. As it turned out it wasn’t a problem with the Aotea College students showing maturity beyond their years and delivered some well received coaching sessions. Celia Fleck Head of PE at Aotea College and teacher of the Year 12 group was particularly impressed by the program, “The program gave the Year 9 students an opportunity to see what they could be involved in for Senior PE, it provided an opportunity to see positive role modeling from senior students and form positive relationships with the younger students while the students gained new knowledge and the skills of Flag League,” Celia said. She went on to say that the experience was valuable for her senior students to give them an idea of future career options as some of the students spoke afterwards about the idea of potentially becoming teachers or looking for a career in sport development. To conclude the program the students managed a interclass tournament over two lessons. The competition was fierce (especially for the Teachers on the sideline!!) Richard Anderton’s class 9La eventually came out on top as winners in golden point extra time!! Alex Smits

set up and marked. Also a big thank you to those who are coaching teams and helping them get to Pomare to play the great game of

Rugby League.

The wet sodden ground didn’t dampen anyones enthusiasm with some great League played at the Kura. Rangikura and St Pius had a great match that ended in a 20 all draw – a great result for Rangikura. Tairangi bounced back from last week’s defeat to beat Corinna who had a massive game the week before. Just to show that winning isn’t everything. The result of the round went to Cannons Creek. Even though they lost to a very good Holy Family team the improvement that they have demonstrated has been immense and their team work and spirit was outstanding. Their coach Duncan Murray was incredibly proud of their efforts and so he should be!!

Our Randwick juniors (ages 13-17) have been part of a programme called HEHA Early Morning Sacrifice training, this is held every Tuesday morning at 6am, this runs for 10 weeks and we are now halfway through the training programme. After every training

session, we provide the kids with a healthy breakfast and lunch for them to take to school. This programme is not only teaching the kids to be disciplined in training and what it would be like to be a professional sportsperson (ie. trainings), but also emphasising the importance of eating healthy meals to give them energy during the day. HEHA (Healthy Eating - Healthy Action) has generously sponsored the food portion of the programme which has helped us a lot, but we would like to raise funds to reward the kids for their dedication to the programme. We are running two lotto bonus fundraisers to help with this: $20.00 a ticket and 40 numbers - the first draw will be on 18/06/11 the 2nd on 02/07/11. Prizes are $100 for the bonus number, $50 for the number either side of the bonus and $50.00 for the first four numbers drawn. Please email Tarsh on this address if you are interested in purchasing a number (or two) for either draws, or text/call on 0274260990. Thank you for your support

The Wainuiomata Rugby League club would like to

acknowledge the Gas Hub, New World Wainuiomata,

Dawn Bake Bakery and the Cameron Harrison butchery deli for their product and sponsorship support for the club during the

NZ Women’s Nationals tournament on 4th & 5th June.

And also a heads up, the Wainuiomata Lions for their last 3 premier home games (which start on

25 June) will have some of its mini's and mod's on the entry gates with buckets collecting a gold coin donation that will go towards Wainuiomata Junior

rugby league. The junior committee has asked that the club support this fundraising

initiative and we do.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above please call Simon on 4962160 to

NEW ZEALAND RUGBY LEAGUE

SMOKEFREE PHILOSOPHY

New Zealand Rugby League is committed to removing smoking from our sport by establishing a

Smokefree policy for people to respect and enjoy.

We are Smokefree because:

in the game of Rugby League and being

Smokefree is a positive health choice for each of us to make. • It helps us feel good socially, emotionally and physically, especially during a game of Rugby League. • It supports our team-mates and friends who want to give up smoking. • It supports our friends who don’t smoke in the club and on the sideline as it provides healthy

environments for all to enjoy.

Having role models (players, coaches and

administrators) who are Smokefree encourages

our tamariki (children) to choose not to smoke. • It protects our tamariki from the harmful effects of people smoking around them at the game and especially in the clubrooms.

Rugby League is all about good health and active lifestyles

and smoking has no part to play. Please respect our Smokefree Philosophy.

If you choose to smoke, please do so outside our Smokefree areas.

Remind smokers not to light up in our Smokefree areas . . . be supportive – tobacco addiction is a powerful thing.

vital to the on going growth and development of our game at all levels.

We encourage all our supporters to support our sponsors when ever

possible. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor of Wellington Rugby
