Then you just sort of slideabout. This gets easier as yourBrylcreem drips on to thefloor ...JAMIE: This dance is calledthe Creep. You just creep upbehind the girl/boy you fancyand stare at them until theytell you to go away. At least,.that's what I always do ...SALLY: My dance is calledthe Complex. To do it youmust feel very insecure, ..somake yourself look silly bywearing a tutu or something.'Then stand in the middle ofthe floor and look hurt wheneverybody laughs at you ....BRIGID: This is the BrigidBounce. It's very simple, youjust jump up and down andyell, "Mind my tights!" I dis-covered it one morning whenI let the cats out.KIM: Here it is folks, theWalton Whoop! You mustwear dungarees, of course, and then you rush aroundhugging everybody like theydo when Pa gets home in theva n. Try to say "Aw shucks! "as much as possible ....SCOTT: Being forced totravel with the other plebsevery. day on the old bus, Ihave invented the Bus StopShove, Slide in between twopeople who are dancing, pressyourself up against them andshove. I'm not really much of asporty type, but itwas just aweek before the school sportsand Iwas- out with somefriends doing a spot of javelinpractice. And I a s getting onpretty well, in faet ... untilone terrible moment.Iad just thrown my javelinwhen. suddenly, IsawRebecca running into theth rowing area. (She had goneto collect her javelin withoutrealising that Iwas about tothrow mine.)Ishouted to warn her and,as she turned round, the pointof my javelin struck her onthe face. The rest of us ran toher. and we could see that herface was covered in blood. Ifelt so awful. I just couldn'tthink what to do.My friend Jill said that weshould take her to thesecretary' s office as she had aFirst Aid kit. A B we weretaking her through the schooleverybody kept crowdingro und u s and asking what hadhappened. All we said wasthat a javelin had hit her, obody said I had thrown it.Well, they decided to takeRebecca off to the bespital, and the rest of us made our

way back to the changingroom to get dressed.Of course. all the other girlsknew there'd been some kindof accident. but they didn'tknow exactly what hadhappened. To t e n the truth, Ijust felt like runnin off andhiding somewhere ... but Iknew Ic()Q_~do that . So,when they started askingwho'd thrown the javelin, Ihad to admit that it was me.And that was when I came infor a couple of shocks that Ireally hadn't expected.Suddenly girls I'd thoughtwere my friends were lookingat m e acc usin gly an dwh ispe ring amongs tthemselves. One or two of

them even said Imust havedone it deliberately, that I'dsome grudge against Rebeccaand that I'd done it out ofspite. I could hardly believemy ears. Suddenly they weremaking me out to be somekind of monster.Of course Jill stood by me- and so did most of tbeothers. And they told me notto pay any attention to whatthe rest of them were saying. But how could Ihelp feelingguilty? After all, Iad thrownthe javelin.Itwasn't until the next daythat I was allowed to go andvisit Rebecca in the hospital. Her nose had been brokenbut. apart from that, she was

She insisted that itwas as much her fault as itwas mine -and that she didn'thold itagainst me at all. Well,I'll tell you I was reallygrateful to her for that and, infact. Iearned a lot from thewhole incident. For a start, I found oUtwhom real friends are - th eones who stuck by me when Ireally needed them.
