A History Lesson—
of his vision. The road to recovery
was a steep one according to
Snyder who had to adjust to his
new life without sight.
Snyder reports that within 5
weeks he was completing a 5k
run and enjoyed exercise as a
simple hobby. He was ap-
proached multiple times by adap-
tive athletic programs, but re-
mained hesitant at the idea of
competing in swimming again.
Eventually he came around to
the idea, and the year that fol-
lowed was one he couldn't have
imagined. He quickly rose in the
national rankings and it became
clear to him that he had an amaz-
ing opportunity in front of him.
Brad later quoted, “Something
came true that I didn’t necessarily
recognize the importance of it
while it was happening.”
In London 2012, exactly one
year (down to the day) after his
accident in Afghanistan, Brad
touched the wall in his 100-meter
freestyle and became a Paralym-
pian. “It was such a tangible rep-
resentation of how we had turned
everything around”, he said about
the accomplishment.
Brad went on to win another
gold and a silver medal in Lon-
don, as well as another handful of
medals at the IPC World Champi-
onships in Glasgow.
Now, Brad acts an advocate for
adaptive athletics for wound vet-
erans, and hopes to compete next
year in Rio de Janeiro.
Thank you Brad for your ser-
vice. Additionally, thank you for
reminding us that we can perse-
vere even in the face of adversity.
U.S. Navy Lieutenant
Brad Snyder
Brad Snyder was born in Neva-
da, and then relocated to St. Pe-
tersburg, FL where he grew up.
Snyder excelled in the water from
a young age, and continued in the
sport through high school.
Snyder’s long desire to serve
his country lead him to attend the
United State Naval Academy. Be-
sides simply swimming for his
school, Brad studied naval archi-
tecture and eventually was named
captain of the swim team.
Snyder graduated in 2006 and
went on to become a lieutenant in
the Navy. He served in Afghani-
stan as an explosive ordnance
disposal officer.
In September of 2011, the lieu-
tenant was in the midst of rescu-
ing victims of a bombing when he
himself stepped on an improvised
explosive device. It was this
incident that lead to the total loss
