4) Instructor’s e-mail address is for consultation purposes such as how to solve problems but not for information such as what you’d like me to relay to you. For example, I will not reply with what was lectured in class. Please do not expect an answer to such e-mail messages. If you miss, please contact someone else in the class to get information on what you missed. I suggest exchanging emails with someone in case you do miss class. 5) Do not email me to discuss your grade or anything related to grade. Internet is not a safe place to deal with those private sensitive issues. Such email will be deleted without a reply. I respond within 24 hours as long as the email is sent to me on Monday (anytime) through Friday (by noon). I am not available on Saturdays and Sundays. If you email me

• after 12 pm on Friday • anytime on Saturday • anytime on Sunday

expect to get a response sometime on Monday. It is possible for emails to get blocked or lost. If I do not respond within the times explained above and if you have followed the above email policies, you should assume I did not receive the email and resend it. Student may get a temporary access without payment for 14 days, at the bottom of the payment option page. Note: this course does not use the Pierce Canvas course site. Calculator Graphing Calculators: only TI-83, or TI-84 and their variations such as plus, silver are allowed for this course. Scientific Calculators: only TI-30 Xa and TI-30 XII are allowed for this course. You can rent a calculator from the math department but keep in mind they run out of these fast. To do so, you go to Math 1409C and get a form on the door to rent a calculator. You must fill out this form, pay a rental fee at the bookstore and get a receipt, then return to 1409C and give your form and receipt to the Math secretary, Jonathan Gallay. He will then check out a calculator to you. You must return the calculator at the end of the semester (after the Final exam). If you do not there is a hold placed on your transcript. Add Slip: Those who receive add slip during the first week of the class are required to process the add slip within seven days from the date on your add slip. If you miss the period, no new add slip will be issued and you lose your right to add this course. No replacement add slip will be given under any circumstances. Course Description: Includes operations with algebraic expressions, solutions of linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations, graphs of lines and simple parabolas. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of Elementary Algebra (Math 115) the student will be able to: 1. Analyze, construct, and interpret graphs of linear equations and apply these abilities to interpret graphs in the real-world. 2. Model and solve real-world mathematics problems stated in words (word problems) whose solutions require formulating and solving either a linear equation with one variable, or a system of two linear equations in two variables. 3. Solve linear and quadratic equations in one variable, and solve equations containing algebraic fractions in one variable. Course Objectives: 1. Calculate with signed numbers, order of operations 2. Perform operations with algebraic expressions

3. Model problems and solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable 4. Write ratios and solve proportions 5. Solve formulas for one variable 6. Factor polynomials 7. Add and multiply polynomials 8. Simplify expressions involving exponents 9. Convert between standard and scientific notation 10. Perform operations with algebraic fractions 11. Solve equations involving algebraic fractions Attendance and Drop Policy Please, attend every session, as you are responsible for all materials covered from the first day of the semester. There will be no make-up exams or late quizzes accepted (no matter what the reason). Be on time. Any student who has stopped attending class has the responsibility to officially drop the class either on-line, by phone, or in the Admissions and Records office. The instructor has the prerogative to drop any student with unexcused absences equaling one week worth of class at any time throughout the semester up to the drop deadline; however, the student must never assume that the instructor will do so. If you have difficult physical condition (illness etc.) or if you cannot catch up with the course, you need to drop the class immediately. Failure to officially drop may result in the student receiving a grade of “F” for the course. You will be dropped from this course till the last day to receive a W for

• Missing equaling one week worth of class • Failing to respond to an email from the instructor when the instructor

has included that a response is needed by a certain date and time Behavior: You should be alert and prepared to participate when in class. Please no sleeping, text/talking on phones, reading unrelated material, chatting with classmates about unrelated subject matter, surfing the internet on unrelated matters where you can do so, or listening to iPod while in class. Please always be respectful and refrain from disruptive behavior in class! Silence your cell phones! Homework

• Homework assignments will be assigned weekly online at http://www.mymathlab.com, and are due on Monday of each week. No late homework will be accepted. • In order to do the online homework, make sure your computer (PC or Mac) is set to accept cookies. It is possible that tablets such as ipad may not work properly for this site. There are computers available on campus for your use.

• If you have any medical issues and cannot do homework on time, please contact instructor within three days of the occurrence of your medical problem and should provide formal documentation. Failure to contact me in time may forgo your receipt of extension of the affected homework and assignments.

Quizzes

• There may be a quiz in the beginning, middle or end of any class meeting. There is no makeup or early-taken quiz. If you are late for a quiz, you will not get any extra time to complete the quiz.

Tests • Each test only covers the chapters that are specified in the schedule.

There is no makeup or early-taken tests. If you miss a test, that test score will be replaced with your score of Final exam. If you miss a second test, you will receive a zero. If you cheat on a test, you will receive a zero which will not be replaced. Knowledge of previous sections might be assumed for some tests

• Cell phones or computers are not an alternative for calculators. If a student does not bring a calculator, the student voluntarily agrees to do manual calculation.

Final

• The final is comprehensive and covers all the chapters to be learned during this course, and will be given on May 31. There will be no make-up and no alternate date/time scheduled for the Final Exam. The only exception that allows a make-up final is if it is impossible for you to physically come to class, such as major car accident on the way to school on the Final exam day or a trip to emergency room on the Final exam day or a religious reason that does not allow you to participate in school work. Documentations to verify those incidents are needed for consideration of a makeup Final exam. If you need to take the Final Exam at Special Service, you should arrange such exam well in advance with Special Service. I do not have control over the time that Special Service offers to proctor the Final exam. Whether or not the unforeseen event classifies as an emergency is to the instructor’s judgment.

• A make-up Final exam, if given, must be arranged a few days around the official Final exam date.

• Cell phones or computers are not an alternative for calculators. If a student does not bring a calculator, the student voluntarily agrees to do manual calculation.

Evaluation: Your grade will be determined by your overall points. Points will be calculated as follows:

Page 6: Pierce College Spring 2017 Math 115: Elementary Algebra …pshare.piercecollege.edu/academic/syllabi/Shared... · 2017. 7. 24. · Math 110 or Math 112 (with C or better), or passing

Quizzes: 10% Tests: 50% MET Final Exam: 40% Quizzes, tests, and Final exam are the only three categories to determine your grade. There is NO extra points possibility. Grading: A 88 –100% B 78–87.9% C 65 –77.9% D 55–64.9% F <55% To earn a C or better in this class, you must have a score of 50 or better on the MET final exam and you must accumulate at least 65%. If you end up with enough points to get a C or better but you do not score at least a 50 on the final exam your letter grade will be a D. Grades are non-negotiable. Time Commitment: You will get out of the class an amount proportionate to the time and effort you invest. If you cannot give the class the necessary attention, perhaps you should take it another time. I don't accept any excuses of "having no time to study."

If you have any medical issues and cannot do homework or take tests on time, you should contact instructor within three days of the occurrence of your medical problem and should provide formal documentation. Failure to contact in time may result in exclusion from the class and no accommodation will be granted.

Special Services Students with a verified disability who may need a reasonable accommodation(s) for this class are required to notify the instructor by the end of the second week, and contact the DSPS Office or the Office for Special Services and enroll within the two weeks of the semester to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Authorization, based on verification of disability, is required before any accommodation can be made. The phone number for Special Services is 818-719-6430 and they are located in the Student Services Building, #4800. All information will remain confidential.
