4.2 General Requirements for thermal insulation

- The insulation thickness depends on the operating temperature and

where here is an operating temperature of 35°C or more, and heat conservation is essential piping and equipment are provided with thermal insulation.

6.1.2 Installing insulation on tanks, apparatus and machinery

6.1.2.1 Thermal and protective insulation for pumps and machinery

The insulation of pumps is achieved with mineral wool, stitched on one side with galvanized wire netting. These are fastened inside a casing, which surrounds the body of the pump. 6.1.2.1.1 Cutting the casing to fit pumps and machinery

Each casing is prepared separately, i.e. the dimensions for the respective casing are taken directly from the pump only after the pump has been installed. The casing must be fabricated so that the individual parts of the casing can be easily removed from the pump again. It should consist of the same material used for covering the insulation of other equipment parts.

6.1.2.1.2 Fastening the casing parts for pumps and

machinery. The fastening of the individual casing parts to each other is achieved by riveted-on bent lever closures. The number of closures depends on the size and construction of the casing.

6.1.2.1.3 Execution for pumps and machinery

When fabricating the casing, make sure that the manometers of the pump are outside and the associated shut-off devices on the inside are easy to reach and operate by fitting a flap. The shut-off devices of draining components must be inside the casing. Here too, a flap must be provided which guarantees speedy operation. Pipes associated with the pump should be inside the casing. Such pipes, for example, are the scavenge pipe of the bearing ring seal with associated cyclones and coolers.

6.1.2.1.4 Fastening insulation matting for pumps and

machinery In the casings sheet metal strips are riveted which are bent at right angles and onto which the cut-to-size insulation mats with the surface protected by the machine wire netting outwards are pressed. Finally, the projecting tips are bent over.

6.1.2.2 Fitting insulation mats for apparatus and tanks The insulation mats are to be cut to suit the circumference of the apparatus and tanks. To determine the sizes, the following rule applies:(Da+Sxf) x pi: Da= Outer tank diameter S= Insulation thickness f= Factor f=1.5 Pi=3.14 The insulation mats are laid on the object to be insulated and joined where they abut by means of mat hooks of 2 mm or 1.2 mm thick galvanized binding wire. In addition, the insulation mats are to be fastened with at least 2 strip steel straps of 20x0.5 or 25x0.5 mm or with binding wire. The strip steel straps must be drawn tight and are to be riveted at the end with hollow rivets. When drawing the binding wire tight, it is important that the ends of the wire loops are wound tightly together, bent over and pressed into the insulation. The insulation mats are to be laid far enough away from flanges; valves or other fittings that the joint bolts can be replaced without being hindered by the adjacent insulation. Spacers are to be provided at intervals of approximately 950 mm and incorporated inside the insulation. In general, it is important that the mats are tightly fitted, a tight joint between ends is guaranteed and sagging or sliding together of the insulation is prevented. Any cavities at the vertical or circumferential seams as well as in the area of the spacers are to be stuffed with loose wool.

6.1.2.3 Fitting insulation protection for apparatus and tanks

The outer cladding consists of aluminum sheets in the specified quality and thickness. The number of sheet widths and their length are to be cut to suit the circumference of the spaces, whereby an overlap of 50 mm is to be provided both for the longitudinal and transverse seams. Each of the overlapping longitudinal and transverse seams is to be beaded after cutting the sheet metal to size. Places where the sheet metal cladding is interrupted for connecting pieces, brackets, supports, boiler shields or similar are to be neatly formed and tightly sealed with press-in end caps of sheet metal or, if necessary, are to be provided and sealed with surrounds and caps. Such places are to be executed so that no moisture can enter the insulation.

Where necessary, expansion joints to compensate the expansion due to heat are to be arranged. The overlaps of the individual sheet widths of segments are to be sealed with an intermediate layer of thermoset tape of similar (permanently plastic sealing tape) 20x2 mm. Where several sheet widths are provisionally fastened to the tank, they are clamped tightly against the object with special tensioners and galvanized strip steel straps before screwing together. It is important that there is an overlap of 50mm at each joint. The overlap seams are then screwed together at intervals of approximately 150 mm with sheet metal screws. The strip steel strap is cut exactly to length and holes of 5 mm diameter are punched into it at intervals of approximately 250 mm. The ends to be folded are provided with holes through which M8 screws can later be screwed. After punching and drilling, the steel strips are bent to the appropriate diameter in a rounding machine. The spacer supports are similarly fabricated from 30x3 mm strip steel. The height of the spacer supports depends on the respective insulation thickness. The folded part is approximately 30 mm wide. In the center of the folded section is similarly to be provided a punched hole of 5 mm diameter. The pre-fabricated spacer supports are then riveted tightly to the strip steel.

6.1.3 Installing insulation for pipe and fitting

Preformed covering up to the thickness as specified, shall be used. Where preformed pipe covering is not available in a particular size, blanket type insulation should be installed. Install blanket insulation with lath side outward and all joint butted together. Fasten blankets with metal bands. Spacers are to be used as supporting structure. Supporting structures are necessary for pipelines with an insulation circumference of 0.6 meters. For pipes with heat tracing, under no circumstances may wool be allowed between the product and heat-tracing pipe, since this would considerably impair the transfer of heat. (Fig.A12) For horizontal pipes, the longitudinal seams must be in the bottom half of the circumference. The longitudinal and circumferential seams shall be tighted closely with galvanized binding wire (parag. 5.4.1) or held together with large steel hooks. Any cavities are to be stuffed with loose matting.

6.1.4 Weather proofing jackets

Metal weatherproofing shall be applied over insulation banded with all caps secured with sheet metal screw maximum spacing of screws shall be 150 mm. Vessel head and storage tank roof laps shall be provided with 2 head of caulking. Pipe jacketing shall be lapped to a minimum of 50mm on all seams, and shall be fastened in longitudinal seams only. In all cases, the overlap is to be forward so that no moisture can penetrate the joints.
