BreedsDogs come in many different sizes and breeds.

Today there are about 300 – 400 different breeds of dogs.

Some small dogs are : Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian, Papillion.

Some big dogs are : English Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland.

The smallest dog living on record is a female Chihuahua named Milly- 9.65 cm tall

The Biggest dog on record was a Male Great Dane named Giant George- 7 foot tall

DOGS

• Dogs were first introduced as working animals. They were used for hunting of birds, foxes and ducks and also collecting of food.

• Later people started to keep them as domestic pets.

DOG ROLES

• Dogs perform many roles for people , such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, guard dogs, assisting police and military, friendship to people and helping the handicapped such as guide dogs. This is why they are called “mans best friend”. In 2001 there was estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

PUPPY LITTERS

Dogs have puppies.

Altogether, they are called Litters.

The size of the litter depends on the size of the dog.

Small breeds have an average of 3-4 puppies in each litter, but big dog breeds can have up to 20 puppies in one litter.

• The five most common names : Male: Max, Jake, Buddy, Bailey , Sam Female: Maggie , Molly , Lady , Sadie ,Lucy.

• The Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member of the sporting dog family.

• Puppies are born without teeth and with their eyes closed. They are also born deaf. At 3-4 weeks they get 28 teeth so they can eat solid foods.

Did you know dogs have 3 eyelids? They have an upper and lower eyelid and then they have another one inside the other 2. It helps protect the eye from dirt and dust.

Some dogs have 2 coats of fur.

Dogs live an average of 11 years.

The oldest dog lived for 29 years, which in human terms is 160 years old. His name was Bluey.

A dogs nose print is the same as our finger prints. One of a Kind.
