Described by Poet Laureate John Betjeman as ‘a town caught

in a timeless charm’, Sidmouth has lost none of its regency

splendour in the modern day. Over the fi rst week of August,

the town plays host to its annual Folk Festival, a celebration

A WEEK IN SIDMOUTH

W O R D S : L u c i e S i m i c

As once quoted by David McKie, “There are essentially two kinds of English seaside resort,

Sidmouth and all the rest.” Sidmouth has a unique charm and all the ingredients for a

perfect seaside stay, which has captivated thousands.

Make the most of your visit with our guide to the top fi ve things to do in Sidmouth.

1. On the doorstep of Britain’s longest and most popular National Trail, The South West Coast

Path, Sidmouth is such a fantastic walking destination it features its very own Walking

Festival, with short strolls or strides out on to the cliff-tops.

2. Sidmouth boasts its very own Observatory, for star-gazing, planetarium shows and

astronomy talks and tours. Take a peek at the stars and fi nd out about the skies above

Sidmouth with a visit to Norman Lockyer Observatory.

3. Initially built as a theatre in 1928, you can soak up the detail and ambiance and enjoy a movie

at Sidmouth’s art-deco Radway cinema.

4. Sidmouth offers year round water-sport and outdoor activities – enjoy a gentle kayak as you

explore the coastline, to include hidden coves, or hop on the ferry for an evening cruise.

5. Make a difference and visit The Donkey Sanctuary, a charity founded in 1969 aiming to make

a difference to the lives of donkeys and people all over the world.

Housed in a Regency cottage, Sidmouth Museum

offers something for everyone of all ages through

its interpretation of the Jurassic Coast and

local history.

On permanent display are numerous fine prints,

paintings and old photographs which give the perfect

insight into life in and around Sidmouth as it developed

from fishing village through the Victorian and Regency period to the present

time. Many famous residents and visitors are commemorated, including

Peter Orlando Hutchinson, Sidmouth’s famed antiquarian and Norman

Lockyer whose observatory is nearby.

A superb Jurassic Coast display includes a focus on the rare fossil reptile and

amphibian bones found on the beaches either side of the town; including an

early reptile jaw and the remains of a strange mammal-like reptile creature

called a Rhynchosaur. Take a look at the footprints of a large reptile which

would have roamed the area 240million years ago, and compare their size

with yours!

Young people are well catered for with their

own area and Activity Days.

Not to be missed are free guided strolls, a

perfect way to explore historic Sidmouth and

learn about the Jurassic Coast. Tuesday and Thursday mornings, at 10.30

are Town walks; Wednesday afternoons, at 2.00, are geology walks.

Special Event Days are held throughout the season. Pick up a copy of the

brochure for details

Annual exhibitions reflect local interest so there is always something new

to see. For 2015 these displays include Napoleon, Turner, WW1 postcards

and West Country Mining – our area’s other World Heritage Site.

SEEING STARSW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

First established in 1916, the observatory was the brainchild of amateur

astronomer Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer, who before his retirement to

Sidmouth, was Director of the Solar Physics Observatory at South Kensington,

and in 1887 the fi rst professor of astronomical physics in what is now the Royal

College of Science.

On moving to the Jurassic Coast, Lockyer didn’t rest on his laurels and in

1912, at the suggestion of noted civil engineer and pioneer aviator Francis

McClean, obtained support for the building of a observatory on the hill above

his home. With construction of the fi rst dome underway, Lockyer went on the

search for equipment with which to furnish the facility. McClean once again

came to Lockyer’s aid, donating a telescope from his father’s observatory at

Tunbridge Wells. Lockyer also succeeded in obtaining a second scope from his

former workplace at the Solar Physics Observatory, one originally destined for

Cambridge. With this equipment, Lockyer went on to undertake pioneering work

on star temperature, ultimately contributing to theories on stellar evolution.

Since its inception, the Observatory has grown in size, now boasting fi ve domes

including ‘Mond‘, which houses the 6¼-inch Lockyer Refractor Telescope with

which the astronomer discovered the gas Helium. Operated from 1946 to 1987

by the University of Exeter, then transferred to East Devon District Council, the

Observatory is solely fi nanced by the Norman Lockyer Observatory Society,

who work to raise the funds necessary for its upkeep from private donations

and hosting public open days. In 2011, the Observatory played host to one of

the many national events tied in with the BBC’s Stargazing Live, and in 2012

celebrated its centenary with the opening of the new Connaught Dome and

Lockyer Technology Centre by Dr Brian May.

The observatory is open to the public at select times throughout the year.

Discover the hidden g

of East Devon

Aylesbeare Common to Sidbury

This is a varied landscape walk, through Aylesbeare Common

Nature Reserve, one the few remaining southern lowland heathland habitats in England, interesting through all seasons and grazed in summer by traditional livestock. The route then crosses the River Otter, through Harpford wood, with remains of a Victorian railway line, then rises to see panoramic views at Fire Beacon Hill before dropping down into Sidbury, a quintessential thatched Devon village with a pub, one of the earliest settlements in Devon.

OUR HEROESW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

Every summer, thousands of visitors descend

on Sidmouth to enjoy their holiday breaks

by the sparkling waters of Lyme Bay. Many

will sun themselves on the town’s extensive

esplanade and beachfront, before taking a

cooling dip in the inviting sea or heading out

on one of the many leisure craft running trips.

Making sure that these pleasure seekers come

to no harm, the volunteer-run Sidmouth

Lifeboat crew stand sentinel 24-hours a day,

365 days a year.

Covering a marine area of approximately 150 square

miles between Axmouth to the east and Budleigh

Salterton to the west, the Sidmouth Lifeboat is an entirely

independent charitable organisation.

Though the team liaises closely with the RNLI when dealing

with callouts, the charity is completely self-funded,

relying on the generosity of the local community and

appreciative visitors.

Crewed by a team of four highly-trained volunteers, the

7.66 metre-long Arctic 24 can reach speeds of up to 45

knots, enabling the team to respond quickly to individuals

and craft in distress. Should the crew receive a call for

assistance, the support team will rapidly deliver the boat

to Clifton beach via trailer, enabling a swift launch straight

into the water. In 2014, the Sidmouth Lifeboat responded

to over 15 callouts from the Portland Coastguard, including

beach walkers trapped by the tide, kayakers endangered by

deteriorating conditions and a 25ft yacht that ran aground

just east of Axmouth.

Both the boat crew and their supporting team are proactive

in raising money for the funding of the service. In 2013 they

completed Sidmouth Lifeboat On Bikes (SLOBS), cycling

the entire UK coastline and visiting every independent

lifeboat station en-route. Taking the team of six 16 days to

complete, SLOBS raised an incredible £17,300, which went

towards the purchase of a replacement back-up vessel for

the service.
