Judson College Department of Music Piano Proficiency Requirements SCALES All Majors and white key minors in eighth notes, hands together, at quarter note=50. Black key minors may be played hands separately. ARPEGGIOS All Major and minor arpeggios in eighth notes, hands separately, at quarter note=50. CHORDS and INVERSIONS Tonic, subdominant, dominant and dominant seventh chords and inversions in all Major and minor keys, hands together. PROGRESSIONS I-IV-V (7) -I in all Major keys and i-iv-V (7) -i in all minor keys, with three voices in the right hand and the roots of the chords in the left hand, with pedal. HARMONIZATION Harmonize and play melodies with primary and secondary chords from both a standard harmonic analysis and from lead sheet symbols, with blocked chords and simple accompanimental patterns. TRANSPOSITION Transpose short melodies, based on standard orchestral transpositions. ACCOMPANIMENT Perform “Simple Gifts” by Aaron Copland or a comparable accompaniment, with an approved soloist or other required performers. Other accompaniments must be approved by the Instructor of Piano. OPEN-SCORE Play three of the four parts of an open SATB score (SAT, SAB, and ATB). The score must be approved by the Instructor of Piano.
